Zhang Yong Zhi (the actor who plays Adam's eldest son in "Return in Glory") wrote a very detailed overview about his experience working with Adam in the past 3 months.

"Return in Glory" has finally completed filming on March 24, 2007. Finished filming its last scene outside the airport. During the 3 months filming, there were moment of happiness, hardship, sadness and all different kinds of mixed feelings that words just can't decribe.
That morning when I was waiting to film my scene, I "squeezed" myself into daddy (Adam)'s car. At first I was just thinking that this is the last day of our father-son relationship filming in the series, so I would like to take down the way of contacting daddy, so that next time if there arechances of me going to hk, I can meet him for meals. But never expected that when I sat down, we start chatting nonstop. The talk was all about filming....to say that Adam is really crazy with filming, is not exaggerating.
Both of us started recalling the past scenes we had played before and we remembered the scene we filmed in Hutong. That was the first day when Adam came. I reacted just like a fan who was shy as this is the first time seeing daddy. I said Hi to him softly. Although usually I am abit shy but still not so shy to the extend. But once Heung Shuai appears, it's just really difficult for me not to try to suppress my heart beat that was beating so fast, and also I just couldn't hide my excitement, worried that I would lose my manners.
The first scene started off with the scene of daddy staying at his brother's house in the first day, filming the sentimental scene before he sleeps. At that time, it was so cold, it was snowing and there was no heater. The 2 of us who are from the South were really difficult to get used to it. But the filming had to continue, daddy scriptlines are really long and you could see him checking every single word of his Chinese pronunciation.
When he was in doubt of any words he came across, he would turn his head around and ask me. At that time I just didn't know how to react, I always gave him a silly smile and then I realized that I needed to answer Adam's question (really hopelessly, it was totally a fan's reaction I gave). While trying out the scene, I watched Adam's pace as he acted. It's very accurate but it's typical Hong Kong style .
The director walked in and communicated with Adam for awhile. Next I saw Adam changing another way of acting and right after he tried it, I heard Adam speaking in a very well-manner tone, asking the director, "Is it just now that way up to your requirements?" The director paused awhile and looked at the window and he was about to open his mouth and Adam immediately responded saying that he felt that this part and the pace could be adjusted. I saw the director nodded his head and agreed in satisfy.
At that time, I was just like a novice who was waiting to watch a series happening behind the scene. Just paying attention to what was going to happen and from my idol, I could see a professional actor, his professional attitude.
The word "learning" can always be heard from my daddy. Jiao Huang is a veteran stage drama actor and his expectation is very high on the word's pronunciation and accuracy. He doesn't care if my daddy is from Hong Kong, he always straight-forwardly pointed out my dad's pronunciation and my dad always faced it openly and said, "This is my first time saying the script in Mandarin for live recording. I really need to learn but to speak good Mandarin is really not easy. Thanks, thanks! Please advise!"
Once again it showed me Heung Shuai's dai hup charisma - humble and discipline.
Those few days after filming, I always tell myself that Zhang Yong Zhi, this time you have entered a treasure cave, you must not return home empty-handed.
As we have done our filming more and more, all of us started to get closer. Dai hup charisma was still there but there was another kind of atmosphere on set. Especially after Adam and Jiao huang filmed the reunited scene, both of them were getting closer and thse 2 emperors' actions started to make people wonder what they were doing.
When Jiao Huang was waiting for his scene, he liked to do exercise. He is 70 years old but he can still lift his legs and does stretches. One day when they were in the Hutong, he was doing stretches, Adam saw it and he said, "Brother also practices kungfu?" Jiao Huang stopped his action and replied seriously, "This is ballet!"
Adam smiled and said, "Oh, I also exercise. In the series, I look like I can fight very well but actually it's just posing only." I just stood aside and looked at these 2 who seem to talk about different topics and started to feel like laughing, wonder what was going to happen. But to my surprise, Jiao Huang suddenly turned his body and gave Adam a sudden pushing movement (like ancient fighting). When Adam saw that, he immediately reacted by showing his palm and performed a counter-attack. Jiao Huang suddenly changed another style and quickly defended and he couldn't help but to burst into laughters. Adam smiled and shouted, "Good move!"
Jiao huang nodded his head and said, "This is reaction! Come, you come..." Jiao Huang lifted Adam's hand and pointed at his own chest, and then he said, "You aim here and see myreaction." Adam nodded his head and gave a soft sigh and immediately responded (Just imagine kung fu movie..hahaa..I don't know how to describe). Jiao Huang breathed and tightened the lower abdomen then turned to avoid, laughed out loud and asked, "Is the response for the directionaccurate? haha, you attack again and attack.." Then Adam continued to attack (Gosh poor Adam! haha)
I stood there and watched in shock, these 2 emperors were actually playing now..their palms were like here and there and both were enjoying and playing as if nobody was there. Finally after enough of playing, Adam laughed and said, "I thought I was already a playful big kid, didn't expect that you were even more playful than I am." At this time if not because the filming's lighting was ready and the director wanted us to try out the scene, I wondered if they would think of some weird moves and continue playing?
Later, slowly all of us realized that Adam was actually a funny guy who made us laugh on the filming set. His playfulness is not just anyone who can overcome it. Everything is as what Adam said, "In the process of filming, it's always waiting, everyone is so tired and therefore we must learn to enjoy ourselves, haha."
I remembered there was a scene when Cui Pai Quan (he was Li Guo Kai's (Adam) good friend, he was the one who helped Adam find his brother) and we were waiting for the elder brother to return home at Hutong. Cui wanted to get the Marten skin coat and put it on for daddy to keep him warm but daddy was thinking of his brother and was not feeling cold at all, therfore he refused to put on. The filming was going smoothly for that part but as we were walking to the front, the director still hadn't shouted OK so Adam and Cui just continued their scene. Cui persisted and wanted Adam to wear the coat. Adam reacted with a serious look because he was still playing the scene but as he was walking and saying those words, it made everyone laugh. He wasmumbling, "Already said don't want to wear it, do you want to cause me to be locked up? Isn't Marten skin coat not supposed to be sold? Need to protect the animals!" These sudden words made all the crews bursted out laughing. This was the first time Adam suddenly reacted hilariously.
When filming in Tianjin mansion, Adam and Jiao Huang were still playing and when Jiao Huang was free, he kept doing sudden attacks. Besides Adam, Gui Ya Lei and I also couldn't avoid it. Once Ming Jian (the second son Lin Shen) and Su Dong (Ming Jian's wife) were filming their quarrel scene at the door. Adam, Jiao Huang, Gui Ia Lei and I were hiding inside a corner waiting to go out to mediate the quarrel.
These 2 big kids have influenced us with their actions. At first I was just trying to warm up to prepare for the quarreling scene but didn't expect to have a quiet exchange movement with daddy. Adam turned his body around and as his usual daihup charisma..haha and perfect figures!
But I didn't expect that after seeing this, Jiao Huang became itchy and waved his hands at me. I just kept shaking my head. These days while filming, whenever Jiao huang reacted, he would turn himself into a kungfu expert. Therefore my reaction was to avoid, but Jiao Huang still insisted, wanted my hand to stretch out and before I could react, he suddenly pulled my hand and lifted me up and put on his shoulder. Adam who was beside me, shouted softly, "Be careful, don't get hurt." Gui Ya Lei turned her head and saw that and was shocked too. She mumbled, "Aiyaya, get down, get down.." I dared not to move and tried to lessen my strength. Afraid that if I moved, I might hurt his waist. Outside was still quarrelling and inside was like a kungfu expert lifting me up. Slowly Jiao Huang put me down and then he was aiming at Adam next. Adam, Gu Ya Lei and I were all responded as if we were being attacked and gave a shocking reaction and stayed still at thespot, not moving and both of our hands on our chests. This group's reaction made us lose from laughing and we bursted out laughing.
Bowie Tsang who was actually at a corner near the wall, suddenly appeared and didn't know what was happening. Seeing us bursted out laughing, she also laughed and her words made us wanting to laugh more. She said, "Aiyo... what are all of you doing? Outside people are quarrelling and you all are playing inside. How old are all of you? This is really.." After she said that, immediately we stopped smiling and we looked at each other like primary school kids who have made a mistake and got lectures from the teacher. In the end, we still couldn't control and bursted out laughing. Bowie Tsang couldn't stop laughing too.
This sudden behind-the-scene showed that the family was getting even closer. And also once when we were waiting to film, daddy sudddenly pointed at my abdomen's muscle that is gradually sagging, heed touch it and sighed, "Aiyoh, son, you must keep fit, your muscle is saggy, even looser than mine." I couldn't help but to shake my head. This is true. This part I can't 'fix' it, but I didn't expect that Adam immediately put 2 chairs together and started demonstrating sit-ups. He spoke as he was doing it, "This doesn't need to have big action, as long you get to exercise the upper and lower sides and you see..just like this.." I looked shocked, Adam's movement was so agile and fast..haha.. I could only keep nodding my head and saying I will work hard!
Regarding Adam's playfulness, as everyone was getting closer, it was even more obvious and thingsalways happened when we were nervous and serious. Adam would always find the gap to fill in the jokes to make us relax. One time at the hospital, when filming the scene of Li Guo Rong donating his bone marrow to Li Guo Kai, the scene of them pushing into the operation room, the 2 beds were going to push inside and they met each other at the corridor. The 2 brothers laid on the bed and stretched out their hands and held each other hands to show their deep relationship.
Yes, their palms. Now when the word "palm" is heard, everyone will become sensitive because Jiao Huang would definitely going to show his action. Just as expected, after trying out the scene and waiting for the lighting preparation, Jiao Huang immediately stretched out his hand and wanted to use his hand to turn over Adam's hand to control it. Unexpectedly, Adam responded with a weird action, he turned over Jiao Huang's hand and held his hand and spoke in a gentle tone. He put Jiao Huang's hand on his chest as he knitted his eyebrows and used a very coquettish tone saying, "Brother, I am using gentleness to counter-attack toughness." After he said that, it made Gui Ya Lei laugh and she beated adam softly on the bed a few times. But Adam didn't let go of Jiao Huang's hands and put the hand on his face saying, "Actually brother and I are brokeback-mountain..." When this was heard, everyone laughed. The sad atmosphere was totally gone, everyone just couldn't help it.
Actually my precious daddy, besides good at cracking jokes, his life's experience and his acting experience are also very often shown out naturally on the set.
Adam joined the showbiz at age 16. He said at that time, you have to endure everything, as long as there are chances to appear on the screen, you already have to be very grateful. Sometimes when you appear on the screen, you have to sell advertisement, sell medicine ad or any other kinds of advertisement. Once you reach the studio, before you get to know what will happen, you are already being put on screen to sell this and that to do promotions. Most of the time, you are being tested to design a storyline and because it's airing live, you don't have the second chance to redo it. Upon hearing that, I then understood why Adam could respond so fast, it's really not easy.
Sometimes Adam would also be reciting poetry on set, he would recite some Hong Kong famous quotes and he feels that the beauty of Chinese words are the tones, the Words and phrases. Once they discussed the rhythm of the words from different places and Adam started reciting many phrases and saying after he returns to Hong Kong, he will collect some phrases and send to him.
The next morning, when Adam saw me, he said he had found some pharses and next time will let me put on my blog. I smiled and nodded my head. Realized that Adam was not just talking for the fun of it, he really meant it.
And when Adam talked about acting, he had his own point of view. During the process of filming, Bowie Tsang was very hardworking and would discuss with me about different kinds of acting related questions. Once I remembered, Adam was chatting with Lin Shen about acting, I was sitting beside them. Adam said sincerely, "When acting, never treat your co-star who's acting opposite you as your competitor and think of challenging the performance. Instead you should work hard to fillup your character, that is the most important. Once you are able to feel a spot that can touch and stimulate you in the performance, you will be able to get into the story easily."
I deeply felt for what Adam had said. The next day when I saw Bowie at the make-up room, I told Bowie these and the sentimental pisces Bowie, immediately shed tears when she heard this, she said, "Thanks Yong Zhi, daddy's words are very important to me at this stage of my life." I nodded my head, I was thinking maybe these words are also very important to every actor too.
To be able to meet Adam is really affinity. On the last day of filming, I was chatting with Adam inside the car the whole morning. He said if it was not affinity, it wouldn't bring all of us to become a family for 3 months. I agreed.
I recalled when filming a banquet scene in Shenzhen, it turned my admiration for Adam as a fan to become really heartfelt admire and respect for Adam. We were filming a scene with a 70 something years old man. Adam was patiently rehearsing with him over and over again. When the director was arranging the scene for the extras, Adam was still accompanying the old sir and rehearsing with him. Later when they filmed the scene, I walked to daddy's side and quietly toldhim, "Daddy, i admire and respect you!" Adam just responded cooly, "If we did't keep rehearsing, the old sir would have problems during the actual filming. I might as well accompany him and rehearse first, you see. In the actual filming, it was done fast. It didn't delay everybody's time and it saved all the troubles."
After Adam said this, I was really touched. Seeing Adam, I was thinking that to be an actor, I really have a lot to learn!
After filming "Return in Glory" and after going through an accident to escape unhurt, a lot of things are seen more clearly now....I treasured the father-son relationship with Adam and I was always thinking if a series represents life, I was lucky that my job allowed me to go through many life experiences. It's not easy and one needs to learn.
There's another Adam's phrase that has been lingering in my mind, "I always hope that in my life, I can become a very good actor that can match well and adjust well, try to adjust my way of acting to match with the performance."
This is Adam's philosophy and I can see that he personally sets an example himself. I have been thinking all over and it does not just apply to only acting, when we face our real lives, should we also try our best to adjust ourselves?
My comment: I love and respect Adam more and more after reading this. Everyone on set turned out to be a "fan" of Adam after working with him hahaha. Lin Shen, Bowie Tsang and the other extras' blogs have all mentioned Adam and given him continuous praises.
Adam's professionalism and philosophy in acting + life have taught many young stars (including his fans) that we must strive hard for our goals. Fame and success don't just come easily!!!!

omg, Jiao Huang is such an annoying man, no offense!!! It's too dangerous for a 70 yrs old man to lift ppl upside-down lidat. I dun consider it a joke cuz some1 might get hurt!!! He would be in a big BIG BIG trouble if he hurt Adam (he was trying to attack Adam after Zhang) lolz.

I agree....I understand that Jiao Huang loves to perform kungfu or whatever, but he should never test it on his co-stars as they are only normal people. He could have hurt them by accident....especially Adam.....I was like....gosh why did he keep asking Adam to attack him! Not funny at all....
Adam was soooo patient to the old man....He sure did save lots of time for the rest by sacrificing his time. He's awesome....yeah, I hope Zhang Yong Zhi will remember to post Adam's phrases up hahaha.....

Jiao Huang is too harsh. Can he speak perfect Cantonese like the way Adam speaks Mandarin?? Geez, save him some slack. He could've said it nicely right? Adam sounds so sweet in his response loL!

Omg, I love this guy! These words mean a lot to me. Not only his philosophy applied in acting, it also applied in everyday life, especially with the environment around you.
Thank you for sharing the filming of "Return of Glory", it makes me more admire, respect Adam than ever. I grew up in HK with his TVB series. I like me a lot as the character he played are so handsome, so trueful and his emotion and tears are so touching and real. His voice is very lovely. I left HK to US since 1989. My memories of youthful time and HK is fading, but when I purchased Adam's TV series, including the Goddness of Lok River, Book and Sword and his songs, I feel he brings back my good memories and his attitude towards life makes him such a wonderful mentor and super star friend/fan to me.
I just want to tell you that he is so talented, yet his talent shines not because of the tricks young actors or singers do, so that they maintain the focus point of the newspaper, giving an illusion of they are famous. Adam Cheng has no body help him, outside elements only hinder him not helping him, he reached and maintained where he is soley by his good look, hard work and positive attitude. I love him a lot, I don't have the luck of meeting him in person, but next time he comes to Reno or LA or SF, I will definitely go and meet him and tell him that he is a super star that shines in his fan's heart forever.
If you have his email, please give that to me so that I can email him direct. I am a good person with only good intentions and best wishes for him. Not to worry.

I think Adam doesn't give out email to the public so don't feel bad if you can't send your message to him. He will definitely return to U.S.A again in the futre so save up! Were you at his concerts last year in Reno and L.A.?

I don't know if anyone has posted this. The video clip is part of TVB JSG 2007 Part 1's awards ceremony. Three singers, Eason, Kenny B and Hacken, tried to imitate Adam's dance steps and couldn't do it. Kenny B said Adam's great, not easy to perform his dance.
Thanks rusty! Haven't seen this yet. Those guys were a joke lol. I agree with them that Chow goon's dance steps are quite hard to imitate, let along his songs!
oh, those guys made me laugh^^ They cannot imitate Adam, but I think Adam can imitate ANYBODY easily and he performs even better. That's why he's given the nickname ban ye Chow^0^

I regret dat I couldn't make it. Glad dat da concert went well. Our Adam deserved it!!! I know how u all felt abt not being able to take pix. Wat da hell??? It's casino for god's sake!!! Just cuz stupid ppl who posted whoeva's concert on youtube doesn't mean dat we share da punishment too!!! I love his blue costume, soo h00T!!! lolz.

how come TVB calendar has more and more ppl every year?? But, I'm quite surprised that he's in the calendar since he hasn't filmed any series for this year, and he's not their contracted artist! Now i need to keep my eyes on the calendar when it's officially released ahaha
Why did you say that? I think that woman is one of TVB's top executives, shes not supposed to be in the calendar... She looks unnatural anyway and Im sure not 'cuz of Adams hands on her shoulders! loL!

I'm shocked to see Adam on the calendar because the time TVB artists shot their photos was the time Adam busy performing ONLY YOU (for 50 days). He was extremely busy and I couldn't imagine how he managed to get it done!
