“Emperor Stage” and “East Asia Entertainment” are proud to co-present “ONLY YOU”, a sumptuous new musical, teaming up on stage for the first time the talents of the incomparable Chan Po-chu, Adam Cheng and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.
To be directed by multiple award-winner Chung King-fai, “ONLY YOU” reunites the team that created “A SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY” – including producer Ko Chi-sum and renowned playwright/ composer/author To Kwok-wai.
“ONLY YOU” will be Chan Po-chu’s third full stage production since coming out of retirement eight years ago. Unquestionably everybody’s favourite screen and stage diva since the 1960s, Chan requires little introduction. She is a living legend. In this new musical, Chan’s leading man will be the equally versatile Adam Cheng, himself one of Hong Kong’s best known and most sought after actors for more than three decades. The 85-member Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, in addition to a large ensemble cast, will lend their full support.
SYNOPSIS
Based on Yuan Dynasty folklores, “ONLY YOU” tells a tale of romance, vengeance and court intrigues in the best tradition of grand Chinese opera.
Meng Lijun (Chan), a beautiful and clever maiden, is engaged to her childhood sweetheart, Huangpu Shaohua (Cheng). However, before the marriage can take place, she is forced into exile when her parents are framed by corrupt court officials and sentenced to death.
Meng returns three years later and awaits the chance to avenge her parents. Disguised as a young male scholar, Meng wins a public audition to become a court official. Before long, “he” rises to prominence after curing the ailing Empress Dowager.
Through a chance encounter, Meng is reunited with Huangpu, now a successful garrison commander. The young general is certain that he has met this handsome official before but he could not quite place “him”. Understandably, Meng is evasive about her true identity as she maps out her retribution – even though it pains her to knowingly allow love to continue to brush her by. As the proverbial plot thickens, the Emperor senses that all is not well with his favourite young official and is determined to do something about it – all in the name of love!
Running time: Approx. 2hrs 15mins with 15mins interval

Adam and Connie Compete with Each Other on Charms and Ability to Control Laughing
Actually Adam and Connie Chan have already informed us through their PRs that they are busy rehearsing the stage drama and will not be free to accept interview from the reporters. But when we step inside the studio, Connie Chan has just coincidentally walked over to the next room to do something and we grab the chance that Adam is free. Still Adam is generous to sit down and talk to the reporters but while interviewing Adam, Connie chan suddenly comes back quietly, walking and standing behind Adam. Both of them are talking and joking and not in a hurry to start rehearsing. This give us the chance to complete our work.
With regards to the last time they collaborated with each other, Adam says, "Roughly 20 years ago," and Connie Chan says, "No, should be 20+ years ago." Actually both of them have forgotten that the last time they collaborated with each other was actually in a movie "Hei Sha Xing," it was 39 years ago.
Adam says this time collaborating with Connie Chan, it gives him the feeling that it's a regret that they did not collaborate much earlier. "At that time I was a newbie, dared not even talk much. Connie Chan was already a superstar, always busy filming and she didn't have the time to talk to me. Isn't it a joy now? It's really a regret that we did not meet earlier. We can talk and joke and she always treats us fruits and cakes. Such a good working partner, where can you find?"
Connie Chan says, although they haven't collaborated with each other in the past 39 years but there is no unfamiliar feeling. "Actually although we haven't collaborated with each other later on, but I have always been watching his series and he always has news on the newspaper that I usually look out. Although we don't contact but still feel that we are close friends."Adam interrupts and saysm "We always have spiritual contact!" This makes Connie Chan laughs and says, "No wonder that Louisa So told me it's fun working with you."
We ask if they know that their stage drama tickets is almost sold out, Adam says, "Just Connie Chan's fans alone is enough." Connie Chan laughs again, "See how good he is at making people happy!" Adam reply, "But too bad cannot make you happy!"
When mentions about the most funny and unforgettable incident that happened during their rehearsal, both of them say it's one of the scenes when Connie Chan's role Meng Lai Kuan and Adam's role Huangpu Shaohua exchange their love token. Connie Chan says, "That scene is saying that I bring the sword and exchange Adam's jade pendant as a love token. I need to look at him and dance at the same time. Really don't know how to perform that part." Adam interrupts and says, "Just seeing you already can faint." Connie Chan controls herself from laughing and says, "Looking at Adam can really make you laugh easily, don't know if can control laughing when perform live or not."
Ask if Adam's electric power (Charm) is very strong? Adam responds before Connie Chan and says, "She is stronger." Connie Chan refutes saying, "He's stronger." Although when they started rehearsing, both of them did not burst out laughing when looking at each other, but when Adam suddenly pretended to kiss Connie Chan, even the director King Sir bursted out laughing. At the end, Adam even says "When rehearsing this scene, I put in the feelings of first love, when the feeling is there, will just kiss."
Besides Adam and Connie Chan, the casts of the stage drama "Only You" also include Jiao Yuan, Lee Hiang kam and Connie Chan's son Yeung Tin Ging and a group of drama school students. It turn out that Connie Chan's son, Yeung Tin Ging's childhood idol is actually Adam. He says, "When I was young, I loved to watch 'Chor Lau Heung' and I also asked my mom to bring me to see Adam filming before. Therefore, to be able to perform with Adam this time is really honourable."
I didnt know they knew each other loL. So they've been telling each other about Adam's humor and charm I guess... Thankx SL for translating! This is a funny interview of Adam and Connie indeed!
"Looking at Adam can really make you laugh easily....." LMAO
by Cristine
COuldn't stop laughing when I read that line coz Adam does have a comedic face that automatically makes u feel close to him. I mean i wouldn't be scared or hesitated to ask Adam for an autograph or picture taken if I ever bumped into him on the street, lol.

hahahaa I didn't know y Adam pretended to kiss Connie Chan 'til I read SL's translation. He wuz really into his role!!! I wish n hope this play will be released on DVD cuz it lookz like a grand production with 2 megastars lolz.
Yesterday Adam, Connie Chan and the stage play's director, scriptwriter attended a promotional event for their stage play "Only You." They shared with us some of the interesting incidents that will happen in the stage play. Adam and Connie chan were flirting with one another at the event showing their great chemistry.
Adam joked that this time collaborating with Connie Chan brings back the sparks between them making Connie Chan falls in love with him. He said during the rehearsal, he could see that Connie Chan is back to her young girl's mood, her tenderly whine makes people dote on her and he joked that he is still recalling it. Connie Chan who sat beside Adam was happy when she heard it. She also joked that Adam's charm is just simply irresistable and before rehearsing, Connie Chan already talked to Adam's wife, telling her not to worry. Adam said, "Connie Chan is like a treasure, to be discovered by me who is seeking for valuable. She makes me feel in daze."
Asked Adam if he had forgotten his wife? Adam laughed and said he had already said this before, the feelings only applied in the show, when he calls the other person real name, he won't get mixed up with it.
Connie Chan laughed and said it's Adam style to tease and he can create a happy atmosphere. Adam has played many characters before and he feels that "Greed of Man" Ding Hai's character can change his life. It could make him getting scolded on the street and make his fans unhappy about it. Adam said Ding Hai made him realize something in life. When Ding Hai did something wrong, he kept finding excuses, thus it makes Adam feels that Once you do something wrong, you must admit it, try to solve it as soon as possible. He said he was being scolded by the audience at that time because everyone feels that he is a dai hup (swordsman), Chor Lau Heung. So when he played Ding Hai, he became like a modern crime buster, but actually he was also a crazy man. Adam said after he played Ding Hai, he has changed from a person who doesn't know about shares and become one who knows. For example, he knew that awhile ago the shares had reached its highest levels in five years and he laughed saying he will pay more attention to the shares on its rises and profits.

Yeah, and can somebody tell me why Adam had to sit THAT close to Connie Chan while there was a HUGE space between him and the director??? -_-!!! I thought Connie Chan almost fell off the chair LOL
Thanks SL for the translation and ACL for the news!! Nice pics!!!!
P.S. Adam, I think Connie could hold the cup herself, she was not that feeble LOL
lmao, I know. in da beginning I tot dat da couch was big but how come they sat too close to each other??? It turned out dat our Adam is at his sweet side again. He'z really sweet esp to femalez lolz.
Thank u SL for ur translation! I'm starting to like Connie Chan now. She seems like a nice person. Who wouldn't when they have to face our down-to-earth Adam right?
eh, but Ting Ting is def an idiot for not believing in her father. She shld've known betta since she's also a lawyer!!! Tony an idiot??? Y so??? Ur fren is weird lmao.
Remember we're looking at it from a Western perspective. Ting Ting's behaviour is more acceptable to us because we don't have the same sense of honour/duty towards family. She is more stubborn about hurting her father towards the middle of the show when he is beginning to change, but I think she's also punishing herself in a way. And Tony's daft because he's still citing too much law as a defence against his own feelings LOL.
lmao, no wonder Western kids r less filial than Asian kids. Am I being stereotyped??? But I like Western culture, less pressure n more freedom hehehehehe. Still disliked Ting ting's attitude n behavior toward her father. She emotionally hurted her him with her false assumptions!!! N-e-wayz, whoa KC, let'z not get too emotional lolz.
No, not sterotyped at all, and anyway stereotypes always arise from a truth Western kids are very unfilial now, actually it's very sad that they have no respect I do agree that TT was cruel to hurt her father like that (it was probably when she said 'I think of you as a not-loved distant relative' that was the worse thing), but again this is a show about how people change, so to have characters that make you mad or annoyed is good, especially if you like them at the end of the series That's why I like BB so much.
But he's supposed to be foolish at the start of the series, otherwise how can he change and learn? The fact that my friend finds Tony an idiot is actually a compliment on how good Adam's acting is. If she doesn't like his character now, then she will see how he changes as he does the work with Legal Aid. If she still finds him daft at the end of the series then I will agree with you LOL
I apologize for my harsh comment. I was ticked off by her mean remark toward Tony >_< Do please let me know if her perspective toward Tony doesn't changed in the end, lol.
LMAO you guys are totally off topic, whatever happened to our BB thread?? HAHA. I would love to defend Tony because he is not an idiot but I'm trying my best to control myself.
hahahhaa yea, he wuz totally against all da animals (cats, dogs) in BB!!! I rem laughing at da scene where Sophie's Cat jumped on his lap lmao, it wuz hilarious!!!
LOL the cat scares me, it just stares in every shot! Maybe the director was holding a mouse for it behind the camera! Get rid of the cat, just have the man LMAO
Thank you, Anna Another bow-tie! A lot of Adam in this ep :p And Empress Cixi. Really cool shot of the crows on the palace roof against the night sky...
Since the old thread is getting too long, I started a new one. And because my video splitter software can't work this time >_<!!! so I just made some screencaps(I think Adam looks GOOD in ep4) and there r also some notes below the pics.
1. Every 3:00 before dawn, the ministers would start moving to the palace to go to court. They waited before the main entrance(wu men), and when the drumbeat started on time, the door would open for the ministers to line up according to their ranks in the square inside the palace. The emperor went to court around 9:30 to 11:00 in the morning.
2. Emperor Zheng De in Ming Dynasty one time was absent from court but he didn't give the notice beforehand, those poor ministers waited in the square from early morning to late afternoon. Finally Zheng De emperor announced "exempted", they all rushed home to take a rest, in such a chaos, one general was stamped on to death @@
3. Emperor KangXi went to court everyday w/o any absentation ever since his 16.
4. When the power of the First Minister reached it's height, even imperial edict had to be signed by him before being announced, otherwise it's invalid.
5. In 1380, Ming Tai Zu dismissed the left and right First Minister to centralize the authority. Then Ming Cheng Zu formed the Ministry. Zhang Juzheng, the mentor of Emperor WanLi(the one we saw in BH), was the head of the Ministry at that time and also the one who held the rein of government.
6. In 1506, the Minitry decided to impeach the chief eunuch Liu Jin, but Emperor Cheng De didn't define his position toward this issue. The Ministry said if eunuch Liu was not dismissed next morning in court, they would all resign. However, Emperor Cheng De didn't show up but Liu, who was just appointed as the manager of Si Li Jian(the head of all the eunuchs, who had the same power as First Minister), all the state papers had to be reviewed by him.
He had a trick, he liked to report to the emperor about those state papers when the emperor was busy having fun(the emperor was an eccentric pleasure-seeker), to challenge the emperor's patience, most of the time, the emperor would just tell Liu to take care of those papers for him and leave him alone.
And because eunuchs had high status and power, many people liked to be an eunuch at that time. The number of eunuchs in the palace one time peaked at 100000.
7. The most infamous eunuch during Emperor Tian Qi's reign was Wei Zhong Xian. Every morning when he woke up very early, he would tap on the wash-basin making loud sounds, so the emperor who slept near him couldn't sleep well everyday(-_-). This proved that Wei was very arrogant that even the emperor couldn't do anything to him @@ People who fawned on him called him "qian sui"(1000 years old), then the title became "9000 years old", he changed it himself to "9900 years old".
8. Those officials who were against Liu Jin would be punished by Liu, by beating on the bottom. When the supervisor of the punishment's legs r spreading, that means the beating was just a warning, didn't have to beat him to death @@ If the legs r closed, then that guy had to be dead @@ See the two pics below, pay attention to Adam's legs LOL
In next episode, we will know how Ming Dynasty came to an end and Qing Dynasty was founded.
7th pic = wow! His hands! So hot! Lilac suits him! Must calm down!
3am? @@ poor ministers
they all rushed home to take a rest, in such a chaos, one general was stamped on to death
My God it sounds like the Scottish Parliament LMAO except they stampede to the pub and don't crush anyone these days!!
When the power of the First Minister reached it's height, even imperial edict had to be signed by him before being announced, otherwise it's invalid
Teehee XD lovely powerful Qiu... Umm left and right First Ministers? There used to be two (one to check on the other, maybe?)?
100,000 eunuchs @@ that's just terrifying. Good time to be a doctor though -_-;
Adam's really getting into that part about the beatings LMAO well at least two of his characters have been beaten (FangFang and Ko Sing) so I guess he knows all about it!!!!
Also - that chandelier looks more like a spider-web each time I see it...
Umm left and right First Ministers? There used to be two (one to check on the other, maybe?)?
Ever since Qin Dynasty, there were two First Ministers, normally, the right one has more power than the left one. I think it's just for sharing the workload, and most of the time there were even more First Ministers just the titles were different, the power and jobs were similar. Take a look here(in GB code) http://shxz.nease.net/zxbh.htm u can see many different titles(the 'second' column) The red words r the names of dynasties.
100,000 eunuchs @@ that's just terrifying. Good time to be a doctor though -_-;
Nah, at that time, the emasculation was performed by eunuchs or themselves at home, no doctor was involved -_- (That's why Xinran's spiderweb could be very helpful and profitable LMAO)
Also - that chandelier looks more like a spider-web each time I see it...
Do u know where that chandelier is from?? Also Britain?? What period?? =_=!!
Stupid English books about Chinese history, why didn't it say so before???? Grrr. So it sounds more like our government today, Prime Minister and Deputy/Shadow. Hmm hmm.
the emasculation was performed by eunuchs or themselves at home
@@ what!!! OMG I hate to think how many men died. It's difficult enough as it is to do such an operation (especially as the Chinese way is uh 'total' compared with the way the Ottomans did it), doing it yourself is.... too painful to think about o_O
That would take a LOT of spider-webs!
I don't know where the chandelier is from. The French tend to be the best at that sort of thing, though. It looks a bit too contemporary to be antique, I haven't seen such crazy chandeliers in Deco or Nouveau periods. Just think of how long it would take to dust all those crystals o_O
Thanks Anna for posting clips and screen captures of this document. It looks interesting! I've just finished with Bar Bender, I wonder if this show is available for rent yet.
Watched it... that chandelier is a deranged Christmas tree. In the last episode, I'm sure that Adam will get tangled up in it because it just seems to get bigger each time o_O
No idea what he was saying (this was about the Ming dynasty?) but as I said before, Adam could read a takeaway menu and I'd listen to him, he has such a comforting voice and enunciates so well ~sigh~
This is a cool series, and that was a nice suit :p
1. Emperor Yong Le, Ming Cheng Zu, was entitled as the Prince of Yan when he was 11, 'Yan' means the area around Peking, so he had profound feeling for Peking.
His nephew Ming Hui Di was lost in war, Yong Le was afraid that he would sneak back to snatch his throne and also he was one time got assassinated in court by Ming Hui Di's former subordinate, he had nightmares since then.
One Supreme Secretary of Board of Rites suggested him to move the capital to Peking(before this, the capital was NanJing), they said Peking was a fortunate land for Emperor Yong Le, the feng-shui was good too, it will benefit the Ming Dynasty.
So, in January 1416, the suggestion was agreed unanimously by all the ministers. For the people who were willing to move to Peking, they were exempt from taxation for 5 years.
2. Emperor Yong Le decided that all the porcelain produced by kilns administrated by the government had to be marked w/ "Made in Yong Le era". This was the first time that porcelain had the 'era name' on it. Under Yong Le's support, the manufacturing skill of porcelain leapt greatly, also w/ large-scale producing. Most outstanding craftsmen was gathered in Jing De Town which became the so-called Porcelain Capital in China.
3. In order to celebrate the completion of the Forbidden City(in the new capital Peking), a congratulation ceremony was held in a grand manner. The superstitious Yong Le asked a minister who knew transcendentalism well to calculate the future, the minister said on 8th April next year, there would be a fire accident in the palace, Yong Le was angry so he locked the minister in jail. The emporer said if the prediction didn't come true at that time, the minister would be executed.
On 9th May 1421, the weather changed suddenly, the Forbidden City was struck by lightning, the three big palaces in the city; Tai He Dian, Zhong He Dian and Bao He Dian were ruined in the fire just 3 months after it's completion. All the manpower, material resources and money spent in building the palace during the past 20 years were wasted in such a fire.
Yong Le, who devoutly believed in divine providence, started to wonder if the act of moving the capital had incurred the wrath of Heaven and thus got punished. His health started to go downhill since then. He passed away on the way to go on a campaign to fight the Mongolian.
The central area of the Forbiffen City was full of crumbling walls and dilapidated houses thereafter for 20 years.
4. 18 years after the death of Emperor Shun Zhi(of Qing Dynasty), the imperial kitchen on the west wing of Tai He Dian was on fire(again -_-!!), the fire spread to Tai He Dian which became total ruins afterwards.
5. When Emperor Kang Xi succeeded to the throne, the country was still in the turmoil of war, he didn't have time and mind to repair the palace, untill the 34th year of Kang Xi, the world was at peace, he started the repair.
However, it was 69 years ago that Tai He Dian had it's last repair, thanks to an official called "Liang Jiu" who had worked in the Board of Works in Ming Dynasty for more than 40 years. He had profound knowledge of the structure of Tai He Dian. He made a wooden model of Tai He Dian w/ a ratio 10:1. Amazingly, when the building workers enlarged the building material proportionally according to the the model, they were all perfectly matched. Two years after, the most tall and grand palace in the Forbidden City was completed, which also marked the beginning of the golden age of the Qing Dynasty.
6. Emperor Kang Xi ordered that his era name couldn't be marked on the porcelain cuz porcelain was breakables, if throw away the broken pieces, it would be like throwing away the emperor at the same time, which was not respectful and also ominous.
7. Tai He Dian is also called Jin Luan Dian(Jin = gold, luan = a small tinkling bell tied to the emperor's carriages = the emperor, Dian = palace), which was the emperor's audience hall. It had the most golden decoration in the whole Forbidden City. The bricks laid inside r called "golden brick"(although they were not made of gold) which were specially made for Forbidden City. The producing place was on the outskirt of Suzhou, the making technique has remained the same for hundreds of years.
There r six working procedures in total. Firstly, the soil has to be exposed outside for one year, then dry the unfired bricks in the shade for more than 7 months, after it's put into the kiln, it will be burned w/ 100,000 catties of unhusked rice for two months.
So it takes two whole years to turn the soil into a golden brick. Golden brick is hard in structure, when u knock on it, u can hear a metal sound, and at that time, one piece of golden brick was worth one 'liang'(about 50 grams) of real gold. That's why it's called "golden brick".
In next episode, Adam will talk about the secret Yong Zheng LOL I am so scared XD
Sorry, I found it really interesting seeing Adam talking about YZ @@, so the notes is longer this time, here is just half of it LOL Anyway, I hope u like it XD
Firstly, let's take a look at what suit Adam wore in this episode :P
1. Right after YZ taking the throne at the age of 45, two important policies were put in practice by him : new system of succession, and system of confidential imperial reports.
Qian Qing Gong was one of the three palaces in the 'Inner Court'(Forbidden City is divided into 2 parts; Outer Palace and Inner Court. The Outer palace was where the emperor attended to the state affairs. The Inner Court was the residential quarters of the royal family), it had been the emperor's bedroom before.
But after KangXi died, YZ moved to Yiang Xin Dian. Inside the Qian Qing Gong, there hung an inscribed board w/ four characters "zheng da guang ming"(just and honorable, see pic1) on it, at the back of the board hided the secret of the next succession. Maybe it's because of YZ's suffering from the fights between him and his brothers before that he came up w/ this idea to solve such problem.
YZ wrote two imperial edicts w/ same content himself, including the name of the succession to the throne. One edict was put at the back of the inscribed board, the other was carried w/ him all the time. After he died, the ministers would have to confirm first if those two edicts have the same name or not, if yes, he would be the real succession.
2.As for the passing round of imperial reports, YZ wanted it to be "absolute confidential" in that he carried out the system of confidential imperial reports. In Ming Dynasty, ministers' reports to the throne were mostly disclosed before arrived at the emperor's which made the emperor the last person to know.
YZ used a small box w/ a specially made copper lock(see pic2), except for the emperor and the minister who wrote the report, no one else could open it. In this way, YZ could had his own secret informers all over the country to tell him about the rare news and the people's livelihood.
YZ was suspicious by nature, he particularly insisted on "keeping confidential", once he said, "cautious and secret" r the most important.
3.June 2004, the filming crew went w/ the palace investigating team to visit inside the rooftop of the Tai He Dian, which had never been open to public before. Those wooden corbels r the biggest ones(in architecture) existing now.
The colorful painting on the horizontal timber is called "He Xi colorful painting"( or "palace architecture painting", see pic3, the characteristic is that the painting is formed w/ different kinds of dragon or phoenix, embellished w/ flowers in between, 'framed' w/¡m ¡nat the two opposite ends. Decorate w/ gold powder and gold foil to make it shiny and splendid.), which was drew in the 34th year of KangXi Reign, when Tai He Dian was having it's repair.
They also found YZ's "symbol board"(fu ban, see pic4) at the most top of the center of the rooftop, above the plafond. According to First Historical Archives of China, on 12th August, the 8th year of YongZheng Reign, YZ told people to put three symbol boards in Yiang Xin Dian, Tai He Dian and Qian Qing Gong respectively. Those seymbol boards all had two different contents on them, one was the Eight Diagrams in Chinese mythology which belonged to Taoism, and some incantation. The other one was Manjusri's incantation(Manjushri is the bodhisattva of keen awareness in Buddhism) which belonged to Tibetan Buddhism( In Qing Dynasty, people thought of Kangxi, YZ and QL as the incarnation of Manjushri)
In ancient China's architectural feng-shui theory, people put symbol board to ward off evils, protect the family and keep safe and well. However, YZ's symbol boards were different to the traditional ones because it had not only Taoism's but also Tibetan Buddhism's, which indicated that YZ believed in many kinds of religions, as long as they can keep him safe and well.
4.
The palace investigating team also found 3 thousands of Tibetan Buddhist Scripture in Qin An Dian's treasure tripod(see pic5) which was a bit unusual because Qin An Dian was a Taoism place where people worshipped Xuan Tien Shang Di(The Supreme Lord of the Dark Heaven ), unexpectedly it also had Buddhist Scripture inside. According to the experts, during the Yuan Dynasty, Tibetan Buddhism had already entered the imperial palace and became popular during Ming and Qing, so the scripture was for blessing the country w/ favorable weather, prosperity and peace.
5.
On March 2005, the team discovered a metal box(see pic6) under the ridge of the roof(tiles with colored glaze) of Zhou De Gate, which called "treasure box", inside, there r 24 coins w/ characters "tian xia tai ping"(The world is at peace) on them, and also colorful silk thread, Chinese herbal medicine, perfumes, ingot, precious stones all in 5 different kinds(see pic7)
The purpose of laying the "treasure box" was to pray for "peace and permanence", and the number "5" is related to yin/yang and the concept of the five elements.
That was really interesting! So no mention of 'immorality' then LOL. I was wondering about those colourful beams with the dragon and phoenix, I remember seeing those in the Forbidden City and my brother took loads of pics of them. So now I know what they actually mean
Nice to see that Adam has different positions in the chair LMAO I don't like the bow-tie though
Although YZ had been on the throne for only 13 years, many innovations he made laid a stable foundation for the Qing Dynasty, one of which was setting up the General Command Centre.
In comparison to Qian Qing Gong, Yiang Xin Dian is more close to Outer palace thus more convenient for the emperor to deal w/ the government affairs. It took only one minute for him to get to the Outer Palace from his bedroom, which improved the work efficiency greatly.
Nuerhachi(Taizu Emperor) created Council of 8 beiles(beile, 'lord' in Manchu), Council of Princes and Ministers afterwards, the intention was to make the emperor discuss the government affairs w/ the Manchu nobles. However, those ministers placed a curb on emperor's authority, in order to whittle away powers of the Ministry, YZ decided to draw a line between him and the Ministry.
In the 8th year of YongZheng Reign, Qing was having a war w/ Ge Er Dan, YZ explained that the Ministry was too far away from Inner Court, it might leak the military secret when reporting the war situation, so it was necessary to set up the General Command Centre near his bedroom, Xiang Xin Dian(see pic1)
There was a row of rooms in the northwest side of the square of Qian Qing Gong(see pic2), they were for the on-duty officials working in the General Command Centre. Between the walls of the General Command Centre and the Forbidden City, there is an interval measuring 2 meters in width(see pic3).
It's said that there used to be a secret passage leading to Yiang Xin Dian. The passage passed through the wall of the Forbidden City , then got past the imperial kitchen and into the room of the emperor's(see pic4). Now this passage is gone, left only the dubious trace on the wall(see pic5)
Whether the passage did exist before or not, the distance between the General Command Centre and Yiang Xin Dian was 50 meters only, the emperor could summon the ministers anytime. In comparison, the Ministry, which was also the central administration, was then replaced by the General Command Centre as the new government administration center because of it's longer distance from Xiang Xin Dian, which was about 1000 meters.
After the emperor finished reading the reports presented by palace ministers and local officials, General Command Centre ministers had to listen to the emperor's oral instructions and take them down, then sent the documents back to Xian Xin Dian for the emperor to examine and approve. The whole process took only two hour. After the authorization, an imperial edict was officially made, and released by the General Command Centre.
The General Command Centre would set the 'delivering speed', if the official document said 'deliver quick on horse', the postman would have to proceed 150 kilometers a day. If more urgent, 400,500 or even 600 kilometers a day then. Even if arrived at a stage, they would change the horse only, but not the postman, until the official documents arrive at the addressee's.
After YZ, the Qing emperors could hand down orders directly to the officials of all ranks through the General Command Centre. The council set up by Nuerhachi existed in name only eventually.
The General Command Centre realized YZ's dream of "one man rules the whole world(not the whole world serves one man)". The Qing Dynasty reached another peak during the reign of YZ.
Qing emperors were famous for their industry and YZ is the most industrious one among them. He barely had leisure for fun. He made imperial painters draw him having amusements. Sometimes he went on a hike, sometimes he played w/ monkeys(-_-!!), or played stringed instruments, went fishing. Besides those, there was also a painting of YZ in western suit. These paintings were drew out of imperial painters' imagination.
YZ spent one day everyyear to till land w/ the Empress and Princesses, because he was just like his father KangXi who paid much attention to agriculture. Although YZ was pretty busy w/ the government affairs, it was good enough that he was willing to spend some time to show sympathy for his people with action. So he prided himself on being more diligent than the whole world(what a workaholic!! =_=!!)
In next episode, Adam wil talk about the playful QL, a big 'pleasure seeker' in the Forbidden City LOL
Thank u so much Anna! YC was such a hard working emperor so Adam's portrayal in 'Legend of YC' was accurate and followed pretty close to history. I really admire him!
Is it possible perhaps to divide the file into two part a and b? If possible I will be so very happy. I can not download anything from Mega upload. If its not possible than thats ok. Thank you so very much. I appreciate it very much.
Yeah, I have tried before, but my software was kinda weird, after the division, it was even larger @@!!!(and the quality was worse, so weird!!) Only 1/3 of it and the size was already 70 MBs -_-!!
Let's see if ep8 is bigger than 100 MBs or not. If not, I will upload to yousendit
yeah, I couldnt tell the difference between TCS and Fo Siu Yuen Ming Yuen (the 1st song) in his concert until I watched the DVD loL. No wonder the director joined those songs together one after another... they sound so much alike!
I'd not seen it before. It would be great if we could see some old clips as some of us only joined the forum later. Thanks again! I enjoyed the clip! :>
Lets talk about the series since it has ended. What do you think of the series overall? Such as the plot, characters, actors' performance, cases... Who has the best chemistry with Adam? Do you like the themesong?
BB's plot is much better than the other typical TVB's law dramas and with Chow goon in it adds a major bonus to the production :> I think every actor and actresses has performed above average, at least I wasn't annoyed with anyone's acting in particular. Some cases are common while some cases are touching but I enjoy the way Tony (Chow goon) solves them. Everyone of them has great chemistry with Chow goon from the youngest (Leila) to the oldest (Lora) due to their convincing performances. I've always loved Chow goon's singing hence I totally love BB's themesong. It's pretty catchy!
Best chemistry: Tony and Lora. They never failed to crack me up in front of the TV! Awesome relationship between boss and secretary!
I thought the cases were ok. Not that interesting. none of them took Tony and Ting Ting more than 1 ep to "fight". I became a bigger fan of Adam after BB!
I don't have many things to say~ BB is definitely the best series I've seen so far from TVB!I hope Adam will play more evil roles in the future ar~~ he's such a great great actor!
i haven't seen bb yet still waiting for the release of its vcd! do you know where i can view screep captures of each ep? i prefer adam's character only
Finally I have seen BB all the way through I am almost cross-eyed from staring at the screen these past three days!!!
I thought it was excellent. The writer(s) did a very good job at balancing all the elements and plot lines, and I especially liked the different sets of 'emotional triangles' that were going on... actually there were so many it was more like a Venn diagram LOL. The most powerful of these was at the end, with Tony/Ting Ting/Darren, and I liked the theme of pupil/mentor and parent/child that went through all of the characters. Also the different reasons for wanting to have a career - for fame, money, happiness, to impress a woman, etc, it was very realistic.
I found every character believable and sympathetic. I might not have liked Richard or Darren, but they were written in such a way that you could understand what motivated them. Same with the female roles - especially the different perspectives of Ting Ting, Sophie, Eva and Wai towards love/courtship/marriage. I didn't agree with Sophie or Eva's way of seeing things but I can see their point of view. It was good that nobody was really vilified, except the genuine baddy of the piece, Richard, because he is the only one who does not change.
It was also nice that the romance was played down in favour of... not sure what to call it, personal growth? Human interest? I thought it was stronger to have the open-ended 'will-they, won't-they' of the relationships between TT and Shun and Tony and Wai. They're such strong characters that they didn't need to fall back on a romance plot to keep my interest.
I thought Adam was great (of course!). Tony was a pratt all the way through but he went from arrogant pratt to likeable pratt and even when he was arrogant he still had some humanity. Plus he looked so adorable LOL and he had some hilarious lines :D
I also liked Sammul's character, he did really well in this role. Of the women I liked Louisa (especially her not-really-romance with Keung) and Sophie the best, plus Lora because of the way she talked back to Tony.
20 eps was really perfect, I don't think they could have stretched it any further with those situations. It would be good to see BB2 though, more can be done with those characters in future 10/10 LOL
I don't like Darren, but I think this character is well-written and well-acted, the actor has done a good job here.
And I have some questions for u LOL
1. Do u have any personal fav scene in BB?
2. Do u not like Tony/Louisa? Since u keep saying how hot Keung is and u like his relationship w/ Louisa :P
3. What do u like in Sophie? To make her No.2 on ur women-list. I am not saying she is not good, just curious.
4. What do u think of Tony's 'look' in BB? I am not quite satisfied w/ the way u put it, "so adorable"?? Really, what does that mean exactly? Pls give me more details LOL
5. Did "Tony in court" not impress u at all? Since u didn't talk about it at all @@ U no longer found him criminally attractive in those legal robes when u actually see him in BB?
LMAO it would have been a longer review but I was interrupted and I lost what I was saying!
1. It still has to be Tony in the brothel looking for his mentor, when he said "I'm looking for a man in his seventies" and the prostitute said "Oh, you look decent but really you're kinky!" That was hilarious.
2. Yes, I liked Tony/Louisa but it is what we call a 'slow-burn' romance, actually to me this is most true to life, you know someone for a while then realise you have feelings for them - or as in BB it's other people who know before you do. I like the potential it has and it's the way it should be for those characters, that's why I would like a BB2, to see if they could actually court one another properly LOL.
I find the guy who played Keung very cute, I liked him also in TPS and he is very good at these 'rejected/unrequited' roles. I thought he had good chemistry with Louisa and that made it really strong, too. With Tony and Louisa it was almost an intellectual courtship, so it is conveyed through little, subtle things.
3. Tragically I like Sophie because I think she has great hair! No, really: what was good about her role was that usually you'd expect the younger, pretty gf of top barrister or tycoon to be a bimbo, and she wasn't. She had her own business and although she's obviously not as smart as Tony, she knows how to handle business affairs. Her only weakness is one that many women would empathise with: wanting a husband and family - or the dream of one, rather than the reality. She also sticks with her choice - she goes with Richard and she stands by him. So I find her character very fascinating.
I forgot to mention Rose yesterday, she was a great character that started off almost as a caricature but then when it came to her story with the conman and her love for the boss, she really became interesting.
4. Tony's look... man in a suit HAHA. I think this is the first series I've seen where Adam plays his real age and looks his age, and it's good on him. He's handsome, distinguished and vain. It's the vanity that is adorable. It's not a good trait in reality of course but in Tony it's good, gentle comedy. Plus Adam does those 'huh?' expressions so well, and when he looks offended that is also adorable. Uh can't really explain as I do like his ancient stuff better -_-; but BB was exactly the type of show I like in modern times - put it this way, I usually ffwd when Adam isn't on screen but this time I didn't.
5. LOL sorry! I am used to watching very complicated legal dramas where your head begins to ache after ten minutes and you need a diagram to understand what is going on, so actually it was nice to see 'courtroom lite' drama. Also what interested me most was how similar are HK laws to ours. I know they are based on British law but some are exactly the same, esp property law. Then there are differences in courtroom etiquette. Oh yes and Adam was still hot in legal robes LMAO The closing addresses were good, too.
But for the cases themselves, I found them interesting and you could follow them without difficulty. Some people said they could have been deeper or more complicated, but for me that wasn't the point. Towards the end, Tony realises that the point of law is justice, and justice is to do with ruling, punishing or rewarding people. BB is a show about people and their interaction within the law, so the writers focus on the more human aspects of the cases, and I liked that a lot
Having said all that, I would like in BB2 for Tony to be voted onto the bench and become a judge, because that would be so interesting...
Lora & Tony were fantastic, I always laughed at their scenes!
I think Tony because he learned the most from his experiences and changed more than the others. Ting Ting is younger, and at the end she admitted that her opinion of her father wasn't always as negative as she made it out to be, so although she changed it wasn't as big a change as Tony.
You 'think' that Tony is your fav character? Is it because of Chow goon? Don't worry (if you are), Chow goon's fans won't bite even if you tell the truth hehe.
LOL Yuni I meant it is quite hard for me to really pick a fave, because the writers and actors did such a good job with the characters. I find them all interesting! But I would still say Tony because even though I didn't ffwd any non-Tony scenes, I was still thinking "when will Adam reappear" LOL.
But somehow I still feel something lacking, although u did make detailed and nice comments on Tony's look. Maybe it's because what I want is just one word "HOT" LMAO
Too much of a good thing HAHA (I am picky, I know :P )
And to please you more, I am watching it again... with Amy this time, as our dinner-time viewing (usually we watch the news LMAO) and she has enjoyed the first two eps and says that Tony is really MEAN and she wants to kick him. But she likes Lora and Louisa
Yeah, I like his non-of-my-business attitude as hes being himself. I've had enough of Adam's goody characters so its about time I see something fresh in BB!
Chan Hoi in OUATISH is 1 of ur all-time favs??? How can u worship such a handsome, kind-hearted, suave, smart, attentive, devoted man who knows gambling and making himself look good in both western suits and white robes? It's just like worshipping a god, which is not human enough LMAO
lmao!!! I usually worship Adam's god-like characters, eg. such as those perfect flawless ones lolz. Chan Hoi, Tony, Ah Bong in CBWH, Wang Dong Yun in ILAW, Qian Long, Chor Lau Heung, Yung Ching, da list goes on. U get da pt rite???
ah, sowwie for not making myself clear. I said I usually worship those god-like characters, not all of 'em lolz. Tony's not perfect but his attitude prob attracted meh hehehehe. YC's not perfect but his sweet romance with Sisi melted mah heart. Of course there r some exceptions dat's y I used da terms 'usually worship' instead of 'only worship!!! N-e-wayz, dat's basically da list of mah most beloved fav characters!!!
I can't decide! LOL Wai is better for him, that is for sure. Her care is genuine and not driven by any underlying issues, the way that Sophie's behaviour is.
The relationship of Tony and Sophie is very well-played, especially when she is trying to get him to commit to her and he keeps avoiding the issue or deliberately misunderstanding her. Oh the desperate look of a man who doesn't want to get married again LMAO Adam does that so well! But I feel sorry for Sophie, but at the same time she is a bit mercenary, she is seeing Richard secretly but still hopes for Tony to marry her... so she doesn't really love Tony (and I guess she doesn't love Richard, either), she just loves the idea of marriage and family. So she is not good for him really.
They are so different and they serve different purposes in the story, so it's hard for me to give a propoer answer LOL. Who do you prefer?
Lora is way too old for him lol. I don't get Sophie either. Who does she really love? It's clearly seen that Ah Wai chooses Tony over Ah Keung, but not the same case for Sophie.
I wonder if Sophie does not love anyone, really. We would say 'she is in love with the idea of being in love'. It is said in the show that Sophie is not young, she feels the need to get married and have a child. For some women this is all that matters (I have some friends who are like this, actually... they are willing to take whatever man comes along as long as he can give them security, they don't need to love him first).
For me, this was why they contrasted Sophie with Eva - when Eva finds out about her fiance and the prostitute she wants to break up with him because a loss of his standing will be a loss of her standing. Eva looks at relationship/marriage as way to secure her happiness through money and power. Sophie sees marriage and kids as the thing that will make her happy. But with Wai, all the way through the show she says the way to your own happiness is to help others. She is not selfish and she shares her time, she works hard and she is happy. Eva and Sophie 'take' something from their men, Wai 'gives'.
That's why this show is so good. It actually has a lot of social comment, so it is not just entertaining the viewer, it also shows different lives that we could relate to and understand. For me this is the best kind of show, it reveals truth as well as having drama, tension, comedy, etc. BB really is great.
Initially I favored Sophie more because I thought Tony and her looked cute together, but my opinion changed after Tony busted her little affair with Richard while she was with Tony. Her actions made me think she was desperate to get Tony marry her because she loved him. Were Sophie and Richard really having an affair? I rolled my eyes at her explanation such as she needed this and that, Tony couldn't fullfill, Richard could..... Yeah, then why didn't she tell him earlier?
Like you said, Hiu Wai only gave in and never expected her man to do anything. This type of woman usually suffers more but I'm sure Tony would take a good care of her as he eventually found out who he really loved. Besides being vain, I think Tony is a true gentleman, a romantic boyfriend, a good friend whom I trust, and a loving father.
Yes lor, Other then pretending to treat others very mean, Tony is considered a workaholic and a romantic lawyer, hahaha. He may have after marriage syndrome that's why he's so afraid of starting a new family leh. His past divorce with Anna probably had affected him due to the bad relationship with Ting Ting.
I can understand why Anna (Tony's ex) wishes to have the husband there for her since she is a typical housewife who needs a secure marriage. Sophie on the other hand studied overseas, and is younger so she should be more open minded about marriage. I'm just surprised that both of them want their men to give in while Ah Wai only 'offers'. Anyway, I might be wrong. Ah Wai will probably rush Tony to get married if TVB ever filmed BB2 LOL.
Ah Wai will probably rush Tony to get married if TVB ever filmed BB2 LOL.
Actually, ACL showed me a site which had tons of TVB fanfics, and there was one about BB2, in Chapter2, Tony and Wai were about to get married, and Tony was still pretty busy at work in that he let Wai arrange the wedding LMAO
And Lora was still Tony's wonderful secretary (she didn't go w/ her UK bf), so although the fic was not good(Sorry, the author!! @@), I was satisfied and relieved LOL
P.S. Lora might be too old for Tony, but they can be soul mate!! Forget about the flesh LMAO
But I dunno if it's my own problem or what(the site is down?), I can't view the site 'properly' now @@!! But through the 'cache' of google instead. So I haven't found BB2 yet -_- Maybe u need to go to the 'complete list' to look for it(http://winglin.net/fanfic/completed.shtml)
I've seen stuff on Winglin before and yeah it often does go down (it's down for me atm). LOL I remember ages ago I read some fic completely at random and it had Adam in a minor role as the boss of a lap-dancing club LMAO!!!
LMAO if I remember rightly the heroine of the story was some struggling actress/singer who was forced by some dodgy Triad to work in a lap-dancing club. The author decided about four chapters in to have the boss of the club make an appearance and decided it should be Adam because he is a gentleman and wouldn't take advantage of the girls LMAO (it was one of those fics that had many 'author notes' in it).
But then Adam was given lots of money to set up the heroine with another dodgy Triad guy but I think the hero rescued her at that point. I forget what happened next, sorry -_-
Hmm the site has been down all weekend, we are deprived!
