For me, it would've been around 1981 or thereabouts, shortly after the show opened in London. Barbra Streisand recorded the song for a CD called "Memories" (the token 'new song' tacked onto this best of collection), and my grandmother had this particular tape. So that's how I first heard it. Since then, I've become more partial to Betty Buckley and Michael Crawford's versions.
...for he will do as he do do, and there's no doing anything about it!
I first heard memory, last year, when we danced to it for our musical theatre show, i hadn't seen cats then and we were doing a few of the songs from it, and THATS why my Nana recorded it for me!!!! which is was probably fate!!! because now i'm obcessed!! ahem! where were we? Memory? oh yeah!
I guess when I first got CATS the Video when it first came out. My momma says she heard it sung by a singer in the 70's, but that's impossible, isn't it?

Light, or Darkness... Which road do you choose?
I choose the road in-between. I choose Twilight.
I was young then...
I don't remember the exact time...perhaps in '70 or early '80...for I have read from ALW's book that the song came out on radio before the show was on.
..I played the Streisand version on the radio..at the time it was an AC hit. I still remember the first time I cued up the the 45 (remember those?)on the turntable and gave it a spin...it was late at night, I was the only one in the studio (and the building for that matter)..I remember listening to the lyrics, glancing out the window to the empty street and..kinda getting the "gist" of the tune. 17 years later, I finally had the chance to see the show for the first time on stage. While I don't mind the Streisand version, I'm partial to Elaine Paige's rendition..LOVE her voice!
I saw Heidi Stallings perform as well and I thought she was an AWESOME Griz with a fabulous voice. Out of all the cast recording albums I've heard I still prefer Elaine Paige's "Memory" over the others.
