I don't exactly why Indians ended up not having hairy faces. But that is not to say that no Indians have hair on their faces, they are just not overly hairy. I know several that can grow mustaches. Granted, they are not mustaches like mine, but still mustaches. In the old Indian days they would pluck them out because facial hair was considered very unseemly. It does seem rather odd that a people who survived outdoors for so many hundreds of years didn't evolve to be hairy like Bigfoot!
An interesting historical note here: the mountain men of the 1800 to 1840 era also did not have facial hair because they shaved it off every day. Indians did not trust a man with facial hair. They thought he was trying to hide something. So the mountain men, who for the most part were employed by one of three fur companies, had to shave in order to trade for furs which the Indians trapped for them. So all those old movies you saw where the mountain men had full long beards are bogus! Except for Jeremiah Johnson, which took place later in the century and which dealt with the wild men known as "free trappers," who did anything they dang well pleased!
Ouch! Plucking eyebrows is enough for me! I guess since Indians are descendants of Asians, they don't have a lot of body hair, huh? That's an interesting bit of info about the mountain men. Thanks.
