Hi Gina
I've seen a few lunar eclipses when I lived in England.
The red effect depends on how unpolluted the atmosphere is. It can look a dirty brown in cities. But it's definitely worth watching because it makes you aware that we live on a planet that's part of the solar system. It can be quite eerie to see the earth's shadow cast across the surface of the moon.

Hello Paul,
That is so true about a lunar eclipse, Paul you said you use to live in England, are you English or you were an American living in England ? Just curious...

Well it's pouring with rain in Virginia. Nearby Roanoke is flooded and I hear thunder overhead. The lunar eclipse will occur in private around here. Good luck with other parts of the country. Tell us if it's blood red or rusty brown!

It was beautiful all day today, and then the clouds started rolling in about 4 pm. I'm going to check outside in a little while, but I'm afraid the only moon I'll see tonight will be my baby's butt in the bathtub.
This always happens. Grrrrrrr |

MULE (no login) | MOONER ECLIPSE | May 16 2003, 9:32 AM |
Almost forgot to check on the eclipse.
Just as I was getting ready for bed I decided to check.
I stood out on my porch wearing my HAYNES and my socks looking up in the Southeast sky.
The dinner plate outline was shaded a dark brown with a silver rim along the eastern edge . I can only imagine what sort of stories and superstitions must have been spread around about an event like this before man realized the Earth goes around the Sun not the other way around.
Even knowing how this event occurs it was a powerful feeling and makes us rather insignificant.
Sorry you wern't here to see my moon gina... {:-) |

Guy, what's a tuque? I was beginning to worry that all you guys were standing out there in your tighty whities. Thanks for clearing that up for us :) Mule, at least please tell me you weren't wearing black socks. Ya know, I looked toward the horizon, and thought I saw a little bit of light shining in from the west - could that have been you? heh heh heh heh... |
