This festival was last week held at Fort Hall ... About half way between POCATELLO and BLACKFOOT.
Welcome to the Indian Festival. .
The Annual Shoshone-Bannock Indian Festival is one of the most popular Indian gatherings in North America. It attracts the best dancers in "Indian Country" with tribes throughout the United States participating.
Colorful dancers, accompanied by singing and drumming groups from many tribes, perform nightly in the arbor. Captivating and unforgettable, this combination of sound and images evokes a feeling of centuries-old cultures and traditions.
Along with the contemporary and traditional dance competition, the Festival hosts a "wild and wooly" All-Indian Rodeo and Indian Pony Relay Races.
While you're there, take in over 50 arts & crafts and food concessions, parades, a juried art show, the Miss Shoshone-Bannock Pageant, a Little Princess contest, Indian "Stick Games," and an All-Indian Men's and Women's NAAA Sanctioned Softball Tournament.
I went past the festival grounds at abot 2:00 AM and there were teams still playing softball games on one of the two fields.
Plan to attend this spectacular event! It's held the second weekend of August each year at the Festival and Rodeo Grounds in Fort Hall.
Any body coming this way should include this in on a visit.

Now THAT sounds more like it! I'd love to see something like that! I love all their artwork, and crafts and pottery. If I ever get out that way again, I think we'd do it in the summer so we wouldn't have to pull the kids out of school. Maybe we'll plan it around that festival. Maybe the rain will follow us. I hope not! I'd really enjoy watching that softball tournament, too.
In the paper here that described the pow-wow, not once in the full page ad did it say the word "Indian", but rather "Native American".
There's an Indian Museum in NYC somewhere that I should check out. I remember hearing from someone that it's not that great, which is a very sad thing, considering the rich heritage around here of the Algonquins and the Iroqois. There's an excellent exhibit in Connecticut at the Mohegan Sun Indian Casino. But, it's like a 3 hour drive and since I'm not a big gambler, there's not much else to do out there.
Well, thanks for the info. I'm sure it's a great event. |
