Before we moved out here to Nevada in 2000 we lived in Virginia, and back there my dad trimmed cows hooves for a living,so now that we live out here he goes back east in the spring and fall for about a month to trim,so a couple of weeks after he leaves I fly back and help.So thursday I'll be flying back for a couple of weeks to help my dad trim.It will be warmer back there so that will be nice,it's been pretty cold around here lately,it gets down to the upper 20's at night sometimes. We'll leave tomarrow morning and drive down to Las Vegas and spend the night at my cousins who live down there, and the I'll fly early the next morning. While I'm back there we'll probably have time to go deer hunting, then me and dad will drive back home.We will probably get back around the first week of November so I'll tell you guys when I get back.I hope everyone has a good fall.

Deer hunting

October 11 2006, 7:18 PM

Hi Kyle,

Man, I used to love going deer hunting every fall. Starting about the first part of August I would spend many hours thinking about it, planning and getting ready. Then things changed, and I can't even tell you quite how. It just seemed to lose its allure, and this morning I came into work and found out yesterday was opening day of deer season, and I wasn't even aware of it. Pathetic, huh?

I had a couple of bad incidents with deer hunting and unsavory hunters, some stories that will be probably be incorporated into my books at one time or another. At least two incidents where it could have come to bloodshed. I bluffed my way through one, and the other one I think came out all right only because I got the drop on the other guys. When you start to feel like a cop serving warrants on dangerous felons it sure takes the fun out of the hunt! haha

Anyway, I crave being out with the fall colors, the feeling in the air, the scent of those leaves lying on the damp earth, and the snow melting softly in the shadows of the fir, pine and spruce. I miss the sound of rifles cracking in the distance, and the drum of a ruffed grouse, and I miss the thrill of hearing an elk or big buck thunder away through the timber, having jumped up from right underneath your nose. And yes, I miss the elation of pitting your wits against some of the wiliest critters in the world and then prevailing and knowing you will have a huge store of meat in your freezer against the coming winter--especially knowing that venison is possibly the healthiest and lowest fat meat there is, even more so than turkey and chicken breast.

But I have a hard time crawling out of bed at 4 in the morning and traipsing off into the woods when there is frost everywhere and your fingertips are freezing off. It is a feeling I remember well, and one I used to not mind at all. Ah, I guess I'm getting old.

You must live in high Nevada--Winnemucca or somewhere, huh? 20 degrees in October is getting down there! Anyway, good luck on your hunt. Stay safe.

Kirby

Have a safe trip. Sounds like a really busy time.
Good luck with the hunting, I think. I've never been
into hunting, but it might have more to do with getting
up at the crack of dawn and being cold than with knowing I might be shooting Bambi :)

Linda
