Good Morning friends and neighbors,
The weather here has been above normal temps for this time of year. Things are dry.
The sky is overcast but I don't think we will get much, if any rain. The farmers in the south east Idaho area, are starting to harvest 2nd crop hay. And the grain is only a few days away from being ready to harvest.
And I'm ready for a good western to read ..... How about you?
Kirby?
Be sure to send us all an order blank for the newest ones.
I see that the midwest and especialy Texas has had lots of rain.
I hope all of Kirbys fans and future fans are all safe and dry.
Howdy Mule,
I am in better shape than the weather is here- in Sydney.
It is still cold down here ,even though it is sunny today.
But I can't complain, after all it is our Winter.
we are having a hard time with dry spells in our area also,,
looking out on the beautiful blue ridge mountains,(which are only foothills to the rockies or bitteroot mountain range,)it looks kind of hazy,,,a lot of humidity, but no rain. Plenty of fireflys at night, and crickets hollering louder than ever.
This year has been dryer than normal. It gets up in the 90's during the day but it cools down to the 70's in the evening. We are going to start 2nd cutting on thursday. The year is flying by.
Depends on what your feeding the hay to and for what purpose.....
Something for Cloud?
My friend Don Green likes first or second cutting for his horses.
He liked the way it gave his pulling horses a bit more protien and go power........
For my sheep I liked the third cutting because the stems were not as big and still had lots of leaves.
AND .... It was fresher because it was cut and baled closer to winter feeding time. It seemed to work fine for me. I usually put out an additional protien/mineral tub to help with nutrition along with salt.
Most of the hay around here is low in selenium. That was found to be part of the problem of "White Muscle" (newborn calves not having enough strength to get right up and nurse) in calves. So check your protien suppliment (probably even for your birds) to see the selenium content.
But ANY good clean alfalfa will work.... You can even get by with just good grass for hay. If your using your horse, or making sheep/cows/goats/whatever produce work or offspring, then good nutrtion is essential.
Race horse folks have special rations for speed ... Draft horse show hitches have rations they use to keep horses on the edge of being fat and shiney as well as power.
i learn a lot from all you cowboys out west..hope all of our horse owners back here in northeast tennessee know as much about nutrition for their animals..
Ya'llmay have been cursed with a dry spell but we have been cursed with wet spell here in Louisiana. Every time I come in from offshore I have to spend about two or three days of my one precious week off to cut our yard and pasture cause it would rain a few inces every time I'm gone. If any of ya'll want to come on down and cut my pasture for hay ya'll are more than welcome! It would give me more time with my family. Of course all you going to get is junky ol bemuda grass.
It's raining here again today! I have to cut the grass every week, too. I accidentally left my car window open and it's soaked! Our new puppy won't go outside because it's raining. She had so many accidents in the house today. I wouldn't mind a little dry spell right now. But, the rain makes everything so green and pretty.
