Indian investigators identified the two militants who killed 31 people in a Hindu temple this week as Pakistanis, the Press Trust of India (PTI) said.
The news agency, quoting sources among the investigators, said the two have been identified as Mohammed Amjad Bhai of Lahore and Hafiz Yasir of Attock.
Lahore is in east Pakistan while Attock is in the northwest.
The report said, however, there was no firm indication as to which group the militants belong to, even though leaflets found on their bodies claimed they owed allegiance to a group called Tehrik-e-Kisas.
Two armed gunmen entered the Akshardham Temple in Ganhdinagar, capital of the western state of Gujarat on Tuesday evening, and opened indiscriminate fire.
Twenty-eight Hindu devotees died in the massacre, while three paramilitary commandos were killed before the two were eventually shot dead on Wednesday morning.
In Ahmedabad, neighbouring Gandhinagar, police detained two people, including the driver of the vehicle in which the militants were driven to the temple.
The driver claimed he picked up the attackers in his taxi from the Ahmedabad railway station around the time the Howrah Express arrives.
The train originates at Howrah in the eastern coastal city of Calcutta and reaches the western coastal Gujarat state after traversing the entire breadth of India.
The two were being questioned to determine whether they had a role in the attack, an official said.
