  • The Misuse of “Legalism” or “Legalistic” in Today’s Church Environment

    • Posted Feb 25, 2008 9:04 PM

      Alan,

You really ought to accurately define the word “legalistic” and provide real examples.

Let’s look at your silly examples, and return the questions or comments back to you:

      1. Who says that the Bible says that one is to drive his car to the assembly….? Or, on the other hand, use the donkey as the mode of transportation? How did you come up with this idea? And just who is making an issue out of non-doctrinal matters?

      2. Alan, it’s OK to meet at 9:30am or at 12:30pm—no one is arguing that point. It’s OK for the saints to meet in a home or homes or in the auditorium or outdoors. It’s OK to use the restrooms in the building or the outdoor toilets. And just who is making an issue out of non-doctrinal matters?

      3. It’s OK to use English or another language. I’m sure that congregations in Greece would have a better understanding of NT Greek than we, etc. Again you’re bringing up an issue out of a non-doctrinal matter.

Actually, Alan, I agree with some of what you said but this much—“The way I read the Bible, biblical teachings were done at the temple, in open fields, or in houses. The way I read the Bible a sin is a sin.” I concur.

But I disagree with you when you equate: (1) the use of the musical machines in the assembly with (2) the location where the saints are to meet. That’s comparing apples and oranges.

I also disagree with your assessment that we “seem to be doing the work of Satan.” Quite to the contrary, Alan, in that the change agents’ main objective is to restructure the church that Christ established as though God’s directives for the church needed to be changed. Most of the changes implemented by the change agents in infected congregations have been unnecessary, divisive and destructive. Certainly, Satan is the one enjoying the fruits of the change agents’ labor of discord.

One more thing: please be honest and come up with a list of things that the brotherhood of decades of long ago had no problem with [the SAME LIST of things] that the present generation is suddenly having problems with.

Once you have provided the list, let’s look at each one and determine the reasons why past generations had no problems with them and why this generation is having problems with them. Remember, we’re speaking of only one list here—but we need to differentiate the behaviors and attitudes of the differing generations. The bottom line may be related to the resource(s) used in Bible classes—is it: (1) the Bible and our own Bible materials among the older generations vs. (2) denominational materials and manuals from today’s psychologists and philosophers?

I’m predicting that the older generation(s) did not consider these items “legalistic.” I’m also predicting from the list that the now-generation has re-invented the word “legalistic” to mean and encompass anything that this culture-driven generation simply doesn’t like.

    ...........................THE BOOK

What Happened At the Madison Church of Christ?

There are thousands of churches being taken over across America.

This book is only about one of those churches. It's about the Madison Church Of Christ. By studying the methods used here along with the resource references you might be able to inoculate your church. At the very least you will recognize the signs early on.

Many of the current members of the Madison Church of Christ still don't know what happened.
Some never will know! This book is for them as well.

Madison Church of Christ was a 60 year old church. At one time it was one of the largest churches in the US, and the largest Church of Christ.

It thrived for many years on the vision of it's elders and those of it's ministers. Those visions undoubtably came from the the inspired word of Jesus Christ.

At sometime in the last 10 years there was a deliberate plan by a majority of the elders to take the Madison Church of Christ into a more worldly realm.

They used secrecy, covert planning, and outside sources to scheme and to change the format and direction of the Madison Church of Christ.

The Elders knew that the membership would never approve such a plan. Using the tools of the "Community Church Movement"(consultants, books, seminars, meetings, planters, seeders) they slowly started initiating change so it was never noticed by the members until it was too late.....

At the heart of the plan was the fact that old members were going to be driven off so new techniques could be used to go out and reach the unchurched through new "Contemporary Holy Entertainment" methods developed by the "Community Church Movement"

Old members had to be kept on board long enough to get their plans ready, or the funds would not be there to pay for the new building. So by the plans very nature, it had to be secret.

The church had no plan in effect to renew or approve elders. There was never any need. The elders had always been "as approved by God". 10 of the last 15 elders would begin to shed some doubt on that.

The Elders did not even need a majority at first, because some of the elders went along unwittingly.

This edition starts shortly after some of the members begin to smell something strange in January 2001. Later editions may go back and fill in some of the timeline.

To even start to understand whats happening here, you must read the background materials in the first of the book.

This is only the first edition, and not the end. New editions will be printed as needed. To keep abreast of current changes, please visit our web site; http://www.concernedmembers.com/madison

    Here is the list of players;

    5 Godly Elders
    10 Not so Godly Elders
    120 "Deacons" (allegiance unknown)
    2,800 - 4,000 church "members"
2 "teners" (people who have publicly confessed to have broken all ten commandments)
Unknown number of "sinners" (This is what the 10 elders call us.)
Unknown number of "demons" (Flying everywhere, to many to count)
