Today's episode was the first to incorporate 'copyright Universal TV'. 'Revue TV' which had lasted from the show's beginnings was no more at the end of 1964.
Sherrif Abbott was walkabout yet again, to be replaced by yet another substitute sheriff (John) who Ryker claims got him his job in Medicine Bow. No doubt he'll just disappear when Mark Abbott returns.
No Trampas in sight again. It seems he missed half a season's episodes in 1964. Was he ill? In contract dispute? Any movie he made during this period would have been produced in summer hiatus and not take up six months!Anybody know?
Ryker's age must be 30 in this episode as his stepfather mentions it's 15 years since he last saw him (when he was 15).
Ryker comes across as an emotional character with a less than stable childhood. Clu Gulager's strong, if mannered, acting style was, and still is, a welcome change from some of the wooden 'B' movie type actors that still found employment in TV westerns of the sixties. Gulager's style looked to the future.
Paul- I was hoping you would know what had happened to Trampas! My daughter, Nina, loves his character. She watches for all of the episodes with Doug McClure in them, and makes the same comment of "where's Trampas" each time he is absent. She had a major disappointment when she discovered he had passed away.
"The Payment" had a lot of nice action in it, to be sure. And I liked seeing Clu Galager's character roots. But what about the time he played the MUTE dude on another episode? I can't remember the title, but it was a good episode, and featured alot of Steve Hill in a charitable mood. Since I saw Clu Galager do a knock out job as that character first, it's kind of hard to watch him as the deputy without thinking of him in that other role. I have a "thing" about stuff like that. The television series, "Combat", which my son watches religiously, has a lot of that sort of thing going on with actors playing different roles in different episodes. I find myself thinking (instead of immersing in the plot) "oh, yeah, but that guy definitely does that other character so much better", etc.
Like the actor playing Abe Clayton- now he was perfect for the role! Too bad he couldn't hit those cans at 10 feet though, lucky for the deputy!! LOL.
Yes Tina. That would be the second season episode 'Run Quiet'. Clu Gulager also starred in the first season segment 'The Judgment'.
I know what you mean about actors playing multiple characters. 'The Virginian' had many repeating guest stars in different roles. Steve Forrest, Vera Miles, Charles Bickford (before he became the new owner of Shiloh), Jeanette Nolan (before she joined the regular cast), Lloyd Nolan, Tom Tryon, Leif Erickson (before he joined High Chaparral) etc.....
It was like a repertory company.
Glad to see you on this board! Will do my best to keep this board active as well.
I really enjoyed this Ryker episode, with great performance by Clu
Gulager. Only minor appearance by JD, but in key role as someone
Ryker can confide in and depend on for good advice, and looking good
as always :)
According to this episode, Ryker preferred
being on the right side of the law since age 15, but I thought he'd had
a shadier and more recent past than that.... Thanks for telling how it is different from the episode introducing Ryker, where it was Sheriff Abbott who hired him. Hallmark never aired that one so I haven't seen it since the 1960s.
Anyway, the outlaws (and the writers) had me fooled about their
plans to steal the herd and when they rode into town and up to the
bank instead, I found myself yelling "hah!" and "of course!" though
I was watching by myself LOL!
