Does anyone here know Big&Rich and their CD, "Horse of a Different Color"? They have a song on this CD titled "Real World". There are two lines that remind me of the Virginian. "Some say that he's a loner/How can you explain he's got a name --- nobody knows it." It sounds better as they sing it. (Of course, they are talking about the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz.)
Can't say I've heard of the song or the singers but the lyrics you mentioned could definitely apply to The Virginian. Or the Clint Eastwood 'no name' character. But Owen Wister got there first. He appears to have created the classic mysterious westerner with no-name character in 'The Virginian'. I could be wrong of course and stand to be corrected if somebody knows of a pre-Virginian novel 'no-name western hero' figure.
