A monsoon storm came through my part of the valley in the early morning hours. We had quite a light show as the lightning seemed to be right outside our windows. Thunder rolled and shook the house or that might have just been fear shaking me..lol.. Anyway, it is cooler today. So I'm doing my happy rain dance!

That's good that ist's cooler but that sounds like quite a storm. [linked image]

It's been nice here but it's getting ready to storm now...it's good because we need the rain. I won't have to water all the garden plants so I will have the afternoon off. [linked image]

summer sounds

July 22 2009, 10:20 PM

It was very hot and humid this afternoon and it woke up all the Cicadas! The noise outside was awful.

"Male cicadas have loud noisemakers called "timbals" on the sides of the abdominal base. Their "singing" is not the stridulation (where two structures are rubbed against one another) of many other familiar sound-producing insects like crickets: the timbals are regions of the exoskeleton that are modified to form a complex membrane with thin, membranous portions and thickened "ribs". Contracting the internal timbal muscles produces a clicking sound as the timbals buckle inwards. As these muscles relax, the timbals return to their original position producing another click. The interior of the male abdomen is substantially hollow to amplify the resonance of the sound. A cicada rapidly vibrates these membranes, and enlarged chambers derived from the tracheae make its body serve as a resonance chamber, greatly amplifying the sound. They modulate their noise by wiggling their abdomens toward and away from the tree that they are on. Additionally, each species has its own distinctive song. Many people around the world regularly eat cicadas: the female is prized as it is meatier."

Apparently no one around here eats them...lol... because there are tons of them in the trees. [linked image]

High Tech Monopoly

July 25 2009, 9:51 PM

Well, it has good points like not having little plastic houses left on the floor to step on when you are barefoot! [linked image]

The kids love to play games...even the teenagers. We have been on a "Sorry" kick lately but switched to Monopoly because the youngest one gets sooooooooo mad when you send her back to start....lol. She is not a very good loser, I am afraid happy.gif

She doesn't realize that she is losing at Monopoly until it's a done deal so we don't have to listen to her complain through out the game...lol. [linked image]
