but, 3 akita attacks in one week in the UK??? OK, one was a dummy that petted a tied up dog, but the other two were young children being attacked by loose dogs. Are akitas that popular over there? Are dog attacks by other breeds common there? Are there a high percentage of irresponsible owners? To read the Google news results for Akita dog, you would thing that Great Britain is being over-run by marauding akitas.

From what I know

July 9 2009, 7:18 AM

the Akita is a lot more common than it was when I first got my Benny 16 years ago, but they aren`t as common as you may think, I do see them being walked by kids! and that makes me fume! also the worse thing is that they are being used as trophey dogs and weapon dogs, so they are getting into the hands of the crud in London and other cities, only yesterday some bloke came over to pet Asia and when I told him she was an Akita, he recoiled and said " Whoo, you don`t mess with an Akita do you!" so, sadley they are beginning to get an aggressive reputation sad.gif

Are other "aggressive brreds" banned in the UK, in other words do you feel the Akita is now bieing used in place of pitbulls and such by the wrong people?

Breeds are banned, but

July 9 2009, 9:09 AM

the drug dealers and yobs cross pits with American bulldogs and other bulldog types to get round the pitbull ban even though pitbull "types" are banned as well, but the law is never really implemented and its hard to prove a "type." There are only about 2 breeds banned as far as I knmow and that`s the pitbull and the Toso, so as far as I can see the Akita isn`t replaceing banned dogs, its just been added as a trophy or weapon dog, also irreasponsible breeding is really adding to the problem, anyone can breed and sell any dog, the a***H***s know they can make a mint from selling Akitas so the poor things are being bred like flies right now, the people who sell and breed them know nothing about the breed, just that they can be made to be aggressive sad.gif

Sean it may be as simple as

July 9 2009, 8:28 AM

PB's and other "bully" breeds are OUTLAWED there...it's not like the thugs and idiot owners, will pack it up and stay on the straight and narrow like the UK gov't seem to think. They simply move onto another breed...until THAT one gets banned...

It's very sad but that is truly what I believe. It is a trickle down of the banning of Pit type breeds there. PEOPLE were the problem when those breeds were banned...those PEOPLE are still in that country...and now those PEOPLE have found a new breed.

I expect that Akitas will be petitioned to be added by the AR crazies soon...

Now the above is magnified by a UK press that is seemingly far less forgiving and even less reticent to sensationalize things than the USA...and that's saying something.

Now this is in NO WAY a statement on the country/people as a whole...I know plenty fo folks there fought the bannings...as well as the crop/dock bans...and other dog related legislation. They just seem to be outnumbered.

The Pit ban is a reality...and I don't want to offend anyone but I do believe that is the impetus for all these Akita attacks in the news.
