I posted a while back about Rico and his new nighttime anxiety. We tried the melatonin and that didn't work. So the vet now has him on Clomipramine - generic clomicalm. He gets 100mg twice a day. He's been on it for about 2-3 weeks now and we are seeing progress. He is much calmer and is sleeping through the night. He still refuses to sleep downstairs where we sleep. So I am sleeping upstairs with him. So we can all get sleep. but he is no longer pacing and whining all night long. And he settles down more quickly any other time of the day.
I know all the information says that we are supposed to do behavior modification with the medication. But not sure how to modify this behavior. We do praise him lots when he settles and have tried to send him upstairs on his own at bedtime. He lasts for a short time, then gets worried and wants company.
So two questions - any ideas how to help modify this behavior? and wondering if he will have to be on this forever. He is 9 years old. He was a rescue - but we've had him since he was 4 months old. This behavior started about 2 months ago. No apparent reason for the change.
