reminds us of how band makeovers by aspiring A&R managers will always end in tears, tragedy and hilarious tales of substance abuse. They should have kept the cello player...

Oh shut up, if it wasn't for the band makeover and their management team I can promise you 100% you would never ever have heard of The Libertines in any shape or form. Music When The Lights Go Out, as a standalone song, cannot stand up, the rest of those early songs, brilliant little tunes that they are, maybe even life affirming in places amidst the Libs entire canon of work, could not have had any impact if it wasn't for Up The Bracket. They would have been just yet more too-late-for-britpop wannabes.
Horrorshow, Death On The Stairs, The Good Old Days, Time For Heroes, I Get Along, The Delaney, these were the songs that defined The Libs, the early songs are a poinant reminder of what came before and the actual genius songsmithery that they always had, but if you're saying they should have stayed as this band all along, that they would have had any impact on your life if they had, you are talking bollocks.
They probably would have been wiser to not take things as far as they did in hindsight, but don't get all teary eyed about this. 2001 will be the libs 10 year anniversary. That is the anniversary of What A Waster being released. That was the start.

Well, did I ever say they had an impact on my life? Guess not. Well, "What a Waster" and "The Boy Looked at Johnny" were nice songs to drink yourself into a stupor kind of mood before hitting the town, back in 2003, have to admit that. But apart from that... "meh". But them being awash in money surely was detrimental to their own health and that of some of the people surrounding them, if the respective rumours in that department are true anyways. And no, I don't reckon I would ever have heard of "the libertunes" if Rough Trade/BMG wouldn't have dressed them up in leather jackets and have them spiral up in the wake of the Stroke's fame in late 2002. But I don't really think my life eould have been much different for that after all then again. Yawn...

This thread calls for those pictures posted the other week of them looking like gay mime artists who've taken too much smack and put on way too much make up.

I only know one person who went to see them and thought anything of them at that stage. He worked for the Peel show and said that they were sure fire to get a play on Peel if they could keep it together.
I think the change to electric was inevitable but not to that sound. The changes were integral to any of us having heard of them to the extent that we did though I honestly believe they would have in some capacity got signed and made an underground impact through something like the peel show.
I have know remembered I know somebody else who saw them live in the early days, he thought they were shit "average tunes, played badly" . Think he caught a particularly bad gig.

most great bands have some sort of embarassing past. look at the stone roses, they used to be dodgy goths!
stuff like breck rd lover really illustrates the genuine songwriting abilty that was there under the punk and the excitement...thats why it was such a waste. but it could be n other way

Yeah they did kinda do a reverse beatles didnt they. I think the libertines story is pretty similar to Bolans except minus the embarressing death in a Mini, well so far at least.
