libertines held up better on their second album, but the strokes first was a lot more groundbreaking and for me a bigger deal. then again, I didn't really get into the libertines until their second album was released, as opposed to being the only kid at school dressing up like a the strokes-reject before is this it was even released in sweden.

i fink both bands were really good, i woz in2 the strokes first , obviously, but the libertines had more of an energetic sound in my opinion. They were heavily influenced by the strokes but they had a very different sound 2 them but i agree that they wood have sounded bear dfferent if it wasnt 4 the strokes. both bands had their own very unique styles but verall i think prefer listening to the libs coz of their really energetic, clash-esque punk-rock
IM IN LOVE BUT I DON'T KNOW WHY

I really like The Strokes' second album, I think it sounds much more fresh now than 'Is This It', although perhaps I just listened to that a little too much. It was a step forward for them though and I don't think the quality of songs was a disappointment. Love 'First Impressions Of Earth' as well.

'Room On Fire' was a bag of arse. Totally, shit the NME havn't wrote about us in a couple of weeks so lets make another 'Is This It', except to forget to write any tunes and distract from the bland music by having a pretty neat Tron inspired video...Shit, shit, SHIT. The 3rd one was pretty OK but by now they've been written off by the music press illuminati so they might aswell give up and get proper jobs.
'Up The Bracket' is better than 'Is This It' which sounds pretty dated already. I didn't really wanna reply to this thread but I've written a fair old wack so I'm gonna post it anyway.

Strokes Im afraid, but Libertines are a very close 2nd.
I think its worth noting as well, the Libertines wouldn't have had the success they had without The Strokes being around. The same can be said for a lot of bands. The Strokes were really important in this decade of music.

The Strokes were more important to me, but I have listened way more to Libertines stuff over the years.
it's a close call. I'd say Is This It is better than Up The Bracket but over their whole career there are more great Doherty penned songs than Casablancas ones. and Dohertys stuff is more diverse especially when you start counting all the acoustic & unreleased stuff whereas you got the three Strokes albums plus some additional tracks and that's it.
the second Strokes album is great and I just don't get why people say it's the same as Is This It. it's much richer in its influences and its textures. just listen to it FFS! the only thing that's identical to Is This It is Jules way of singing and Gordon Raphaels minimalistic production /thinny mix which is the reason why it *may* sound on a first listen just like Is This It.

I must say though, when I first saw heard 12:51 I thought the strokes were on to something big. the rest of the album feels pretty bland though. Under control, reptilia and whatever happened was good, that's about it. can't even remember the rest of it, except that one with the useless video starring ryan gentles.

To a certain degree yes, but some of the stuff pete's done has been utter utter garbage and sounds like some pissed tramp playing acoustic for spare change. There's nothing genius about that despite what some may tell you. I couldn't ever image the Strokes releasing a half arsed attempt at something and thinking "yeah it'll do", whereas with Pete a lot of it is.

with Pete it's more hit & miss, without a doubt. up until "First Impressions..." there was not one single Strokes Song I didn't really like, everything up to that point (including the few b-sides) were something I could be happy with. Casablancas seemed to be untouchable. but the quality control on First Impressions wasn't as high as before - you could easily chuck away three or four songs and the album would be better (it's a good album nonetheless - and some songs I didn't like at the time when it was released did grow on me, like Juicebox)
but I like this kind of "songwriting in progress" you can see with Pete sometimes. how a song develops from an acoustic sketch to a folk gem to a shambolic produced version of it. ehem.
I love both bands and my life would be indeed different if I'd have never listened to Strokes / Libertines.

i'd say the cribs sound was different and unique to that of the Strokes sound. Like Libertines are the sound you'd get if you mixed The Cribs with The Strokes - the Libertines are the best of both.
