Hi
Am going to learn to drive soon - applied for a provisional license, got myself some glasses so I can actually see the other cars - just need to get in a car now.
But I'm wondering just how much this is going to set me back. BSM want £25 an hour and they're quite good apparently; so I'm probably going to go with them. I know everyone varies, some take forever to learn, but how many lessons might it take?
I think I might book a series of lessons in their simulator whilst I wait for the provisional license to arrive, anyone have any experience of these?
thanks

BSM are a bit of a rip-off and will charge you extra money for pointless stuff like driving simulators. Waste of time. On your first lesson (if it's 2 hours) you should have time to get used to all the controls, start the car, move off into the road, move back in and park. 2nd 2 hour lesson should be getting into 2nd gear and doing left, then right, turns. Depending on you and your instructor. Sounds like BSM just want to squeeze a bit more money out of you with the Simulator thing. The sooner you're out in a real car (on quiet roads) the better.
Better to find a smaller, local school that'll charge you less than 20 quid an hour. Try and do 2 hour lessons
Most people take between 35 to 50 hours. If you can practice between lessons, that'll help
(I'm a driving instructor at the moment)

I got to 30 hours realised my driving instructor now could teach me nothing and all I needed was experience so taught myself failed twice with him taught myself for two weeks passed. The law in England makes it really bloody hard to pass if your poor the Irish way is alot easier. Wish Id learnt over there. Would've passed in a month instead of 6.

I had thirty hours,

2 hour lessons are much better than having 1 hour lessons cos you get to do more driving cos they'll always talk to you at the start and finish of a lesson
took me like 18 hours to pass but i drove with my mum like all the time which helped too

Learnt with the old man for say, 20-30 hours.
Then booked 20 hours of lessons in a week with BSM followed by a test at the end of the week.
Used 17 hrs of the 20 and got refunded for the other 3.
This was about 10 years ago when lessons were about £14/hour or about £12 if you booked 20 hours.

I had well over 50 hours but that was just because my driving instructor (45 year old man with a lot of bling bling and a fake tan...) would get me nervous and that fucking BMW was a disaster to drive!!! "Do you see that lass over there? D'you see her?" "What, what the ...???" "BRAKE!!!" "WHAT, WHY???" "You didn't look into the rear view mirror, son, I had to shut it down..." That was a feking nightmare... But I got it in the end. I suppose they only recruit the salt (scum) of the earth for these driving instructor jobs...
