i've just started trying to learn to play.
Learned a few chords, intros to a few songs, just bits and bobs really.
but i really wanna improve and am willing to put time in.

I just need a few more experienced players to point me in the right direction. Like excercises to improve, songs that I'd realistically have a chance at playing and stuff like that.

So if anyone fancies giving me a bit of advice, it'll be much appreciated.
(sorry for length)

Hi,

when i was just starting out, I found myself strumming the same handful of chords without really knowing where to go next.

Its all very well, knowing that everything is out there on the internet somewhere, but its hard to find, and if you don't really know what you are looking for pretty impossible.

I picked up a copy of this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Total-Guitar-Tutor-Terry-Burrows/dp/1844421996/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1216330027&sr=8-1

which helped a lot - it explains basic music theory (and although some people don't think it is very "rock and roll" to learn any) it certainly helped me progress past just playing chords.

that book isn't just theory by the way.

It as plenty of little exercises in it. from picking and strum patterns, to hammering on and pulling off notes, bending strings - it also deals in the basics of styles Blues, Country, Rock, to give you a feel.

It also has a massive chord dictionary at the back - which comes in handy for reference.

I'd say that's all you need. a book for reference when it comes to techniques and chords, and after that it's just a matter of keeping keeping on.What usually happens is you get nowhere and you hang it up and let it collect dust. the best route to go is just to keep playing songs you like that are just out of your reach.

most important thing would probably be remembering what notes are on the fretboard. Not kidding here. Just memorize what the notes are that are right by the dots. First string would be G, A, B, Cis, E, second C, D, E, Fis, A and so on. That's a bit of a problem with the guitar that it's, unlike on piano, not all in order. Once you've mastererd that it will be minor disturbance though. Anyways, this is a good tool while you haven't gone to that level:

When I was learning I learned the open chords and then practiced moving between them until it was almost second nature. Then I learned to play barre chords, then some scales. My tip would be practice everyday even for a little bit rather than once every week for an hour.

HOLY MACKEREL
