Looks like my current college course is going to cost way way too much so I'm considering getting a full time job and taking up a course with the Open University.
Anyone else done this? What was it like?

I'd recommend them. You have to be quite self disciplined though, but the materials you get are great. I've done the introduction to business course (b120) and it was alright but a bit boring. Next i'm doing the Arts Past & Present course which looks a bit more interesting - http://www3.open.ac.uk/courses/bin/p12.dll?C01AA100
They look after you too. If you earn under 18k you can get your course paid for. For this course I got it paid for (was meant to be 610), I got a 255 grant for books (they only cost me 40 to buy, and they don't need receipts so its free money) and I'm currently pending for a computer grant of 245 (they need a receipt for this though, but still its a free computer).

Yea, I've been looking at some of the creative writing stuff along with the applied psychology too.
I'm considering trying to become a teacher, but not really sure.
I should be eligible for the grants too, plus with a full time job I'll have cash spare too.

I'm doing a physics course at the moment but looking to switch to psychology. The materials are really good but as Cagoule says you do need to be disciplined and I'm finding it requires a lot more effort to do than a full time degree as I have a full time job as well.

I was thinking about doing the arts and history of arts one too. My older sister did some things with open university a while ago and got all the free computer and stuff, and she enjoyed it too.
I like th eidea of being left to get on with it.

i'm doing introduction to Sociology just now - got my first essay in about 6 years to start at the weekend. Course looks pretty interesting though. unfortunately i have to pay full whack as they don't take into account household income, and i have a scrounging full-time student for a girlfriend

Cagoule, I've just signed up to exactly the same course. Think I'm going to go on and do European Studies at the end of it all. I've never done an OU course but everyone I asked about it has said that as long as you actually want to do it and put the time in then they are really good to do.

With a full time job, I don't know if I could be arsed to take on a course like this as well. I'm only studying 2 modules this year and have my dissertation to do but it's still a good 2 hours a night reading/note taking and that's without any essays to write yet.

i'm about to do a post-grad OU course so i'll tell you what i think in five months time. nearly everyone you ask speaks highly of them though, my mum has done OU for years and raves about it.
the only thing i don't think you get from it (educationally) is much research training because most of the course materials are handed to you you never have to really look for anything.
