though it appears like there is nothing on it, according to the info, I only have 2gigs of space left, so there seems to be stuff on it. any idea how I could access it, or get it to appear?

It was using a PC, I was in an internet cafe, because my PC at home is so slow, so basically while I have loads of CD's, an awful lot of my music was just downloaded and out straight on to my ipod, but not saved anywhere else.
I'd installed itunes, my ipod was set to manually manage music, i had an offer to update my ipod's software, which I declined, but then for some reason the screen showing ipod info on itunes showed a picture of my ipod as if was a 2001 ipod - absolutely bizarre, so I thought I'd better get my ipod off as soon as possible, unplugged it and it said no music on it, no tv, nothing. Checked the "about" just now, mand it says there's only 2 gig free out of 80

after checking further, o the info, it says that there are no songs, no tv shows etc, but still says there is only 2 gig free - could everything still be on there, but just disabled or something?

I had something similar and it was because a flash drive or something I'd used had created a permanent mapping to the E: drive and when I put my ipod in it mapped to the F: drive so Itunes couldn't see it properly - or something like that
Try unmapping the drives on the pc and reconnecting

I've now realised that on the bar that shows how the storage is allocated, the entire bar is orange, which means "other", so there is apparently something on there that is the same size exactly as all the songs I had on there.
I've just plugged my ipod into this computer, which doesn't have itunes, and when I open my ipod, it says that there is nothing on it. ARGHH!!

To reset do you hold down menu play at the same time?

the best thing is to probably copy the music files from your iPod to your hard drive and re import them into itunes. then restore the iPod using iTunes (it sounds like its sortware and/or permissions is a bit fucked). then copy the music back to the ipod from there.

just installed itunes, and it seems the software is fucked - it invited me to restore to factory settings, I declined for now, as I am going to try to get the music off of it first. I suppose it's not as bad as it could be (at the moment) though if I cant copy from the ipod it will be bad

It's going to be a pain to do, but everythings there, and i've managed to copy a coupleof files back to the desktop from the ipod. I'llspend the morning in a net cafe tomorrow and I reckon I'll be fine!!
thanks everyone, especially the person who said about hidden files, I would have deleted everything and gone to factory settings by now! thanks guys

everytime I get a new computer it just randomly erases albums on my ipod.
and it always seem to go for my favourite artists, leaving only guilty pleasures behind and making me seem like an idiot. fucking embarassing it is. ( a lot of swearing there but I get worked up just thinking about it.)

i'm going to sound smug here but i've never had a problem with iTunes or any of the iPods I've owned, and i've been using iTunes since its first release in about '99.
most of the problems seem to arise on the windows versions though, and as i never use windows i can't comment on that.
oh and you're welcome...hope it works out :)
