I'm pretty sure they don't do it anymore, and it doesn't matter if it's "capped" because unless you're hard of hearing, the loudest volume will be more than ample.
On my i tunes, when I put the ipod in I think there's an option to adjust the maximum volume, although by default mine is on maximum.
I remember with my old, non colour one I downloaded a free programme to uncap it, which was an unnecessary piece of piss.

^ Don't listen to this. Ipod classics cannot be uncapped by hacking. Also, do you really want to risk paying all that money only to realise that you cannot hear your music above the noise of the tube/bus. Ebay one from America; there is very little price difference, in fact, you could end up saving some money.

Hello Lise, I bought a 120gb Zune to replace my creative zen and its fucking ace. Transfer is fast and a piece of piss - battery life aint too shabby and at around £160 for a 120gb its a bit of a steal. You need to replace the headphones though - the ones you get with them are toss - but thats the same for every ipod i ever bought. With a reasonable pair of sony in ear phones the sound quality is tops.
Buy one.
