Couple of good ones. First one was on a list of albums Ariel Pink likes and the second group I saw at EOTR this year and they were superb.

Ata Kak - Obaa Sima
Toot Ard - Nuri Andaburi

Any other ones you like?

One I've only recently discovered after seeing them play it live at a punk festival is Monarchie und Alltag by Fehlfarben.

It's Post punk from the very early 80s. I've heard it described as perhaps the most important German language album of all time (there's some interesting info on it on Wikipedia). Think Television meets Gang of Four, but in German.

They've been up and down Germany in the last few months. I like this from Berlin.

Hah! I fucking love you. that's my favourite german album ever and one of my favourites at all. brillant postpunk (interestingly enough, german punk started with post punk and deteriorated later on into the usual beery punk stuff, but for the first few years it was almost exclusively avantgarde punk stuff like Fehlfarben, DAF, Einstürzende Neubauten, FSK).

Monarchie & Alltag is the great german punk record and it got some of the best lyrics ever, managing to sound very german and being lyrical at once in a natural way. the singer Peter Hein, who quit the band before they were going on their first big tour ever in 1980, is one of the most interesting, ehm, characters.

two songs I'd recommend to listen to:

He was fantastic on and off stage. Before Fehlfarben's set he was getting wasted and dancing like a mad man to Turbostaat and some of the Pascow set. He looks like Win Butler's drunk, cooler uncle.

If we're going German then try a bit of D.A.F. (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft)

Either Alles Ist Gut (contains Der Mussolini) or Gold und Liebe (contains Sex Unter Wasse)

DAF & Fehlfarben are more or less from the same team, Düsseldorf post punk. the singer of DAF and the singer of Fehlfarben were in band with each other before they founded the later bands.
They share even a song (which is my favourite DAF song):

Kebabträume is DAFs version:

Militürk is Fehlfarbens version:
