Browser support issues? Here is why...by Pete
BTW - I copied that logo in two other formats:
Jpeg – 17K
Gif – 2.4K
I also redid it as a .png at 975 bytes, slightly less than the one you made at 1723 bytes.
Clearly, PINGs are superior for web-site optimization (faster loading for dial up users, who still makes up most of the net.)
The problem is in browser support, but mostly only if you made the image as an alpha transparency. I use IE 5 and 6, so if you did, I wouldn’t be able to tell; however, I checked it on Firefox and it appears that you did not make it as a transparent image, so it is OK.
Browser that support PING format are:
Windows: Netscape 6, Opera 6, and Mozilla 1 (Firefox)
Mac: Internet Explorer 5, Netscape 6, Opera 5, Mozilla 1, OmniWeb 3.1, and ICab 1.9
Linux: Opera 6, WebTV, and Sega Dreamcast.
The exception is IE does not support the alpha transparency feature.
NS4 (Nutscrape) and IE 4, do not, as far as I know, support PINGs.
