The Kriegspiel Referee program KRef.EXE is broken into the following design module hierarchy:

DM1-Kriegspiel Referee
    DM2A-Security
    DM2B-The Referee Program
         DM3BA-Play Game
               DM4BAA-Logic
               DM4BAB-Make Move
               DM4BAC-InputOutput
               DM4BAD-Main
               DM4BAE-Passwords
         DM3BB-Display
         DM3BC-Introduction

A "design module" is a unit of design that is specified by the design modules above it in the hierarchy. It is independent of any other design modules. A design module includes any number of SUBs, FUNCTIONS and data areas as desired by the persons responsible for it.

Done properly, a design module can be completely re-designed and written by other people and it could plug without problem.
