James Elijah Atkinson (1801-1881) and his wife Elizabeth Jane (nee Todd) (1815-1877), had seven children, George, born 1838; Elizabeth (my g-grandmother), born 1840; Mary, born 1841; Jane, born 1844; Elijah, born 1845; James, born 1848; and Ellen, born 1849. The family departed Kirbymoorside about 1850 or 1851, emigrating to America, where they settled in the State of Michigan.
All of the boys died early, George in the Civil War, Elijah by drowning, and James in a building accident.
I am the only descendant from Elizabeth in my generation. I have two sons and five grandchildren.
Mary had two sons, and after the early death of her husband, one was adopted by Jane, who had lost her own child, and the other with another family.
Ellen was married late to a man with a number of children, but she had none of her own.
I have been in touch with most of the descendants of James and Elizabeth Atkinson, and have recently managed to add much detail to the family. Elizabeth Jane Todd Atkinson had one sister, Mary Todd (1811- ) who married Stephen Jefferson, and had two sons, John and William.
I have no information about any other siblings, although I suspect that there were some brothers of E. J. and Mary. They were both born in Helmsley, according to my data, and there were five men listed on the UK census for 1861, who were born in Helmsley between 1804 and 1814, and might be either brothers or cousins. They were Abraham, George, John, Joseph and Matthew Todd.
I'd like to share information with anyone on the Atkinson family.
