Walter Garbutt - grocer and draper

April 4 2009 at 4:05 PM

The recent release of the 1911 census showed that my grandmother Mary Sturdy, then aged 14, was working as a servant to Walter Robert Garbutt (age 33) whose occupation on the census form is "Grocer & draper & aereated water manufacturer & dealer in bicycles, perambulators & manufacturer of cakes, flowers etc." The address of his house and business was West End, Kirkbymoorside. Also listed are Walter's wife, Annie (30), and their children, Winefred Ward (7), Ruby Evelyn (4), Raymond Fawcett (3) and Walter Owen (1). I'd be interested to hear from anyone who could give me any more information about Walter Garbutt, his shop or any of his descendents, really just to get a clearer picture of my grandmother's early life.
