Re: Just want to see the team win

Well we have one thing in common then, that we both want to see the team do well.

You claim not be a Hindy loyalist and that you don't care who the coach is. I'll take you at your word but I'm not so sure about some of the other people on this board. So, let's look at this argument from a factual standpoint.

You think that these JUCO guys and some guys from around the country haven't produced so we should go back to just recruiting northeastern region kids. Well, if you look at the roster, they have 16 kids from PA, by far the most of any state, in addition to three from NY and one from CT. One guy in next year's freshman class is from PA and one is from NJ. Two of our current JUCO guys are from NY, including a guy that was previously drafted and probably will be again in Mike Wanamaker. The other NY kid is Picconi, who if you saw him play last year, is a solid player. They've also gotten two of the top high school pitchers in the state the last two years in Karr and Grumley. The best high schools kids, such as that catcher from Punxustawny last year, are signing pro contracts. I think this staff has done a decent job of keeping the next-best group of PA kids.

Now, has every recruit Wine and co. have brought in worked out? No. Some of his guys have been disappointments and the book is still out on some of them. But you can't tell me every recruit, local or otherwise, that Hindy brought in worked out perfectly. Let's wait until the end of a long season to make any judgements about Wine's recruits in general.

Also, you say the Deese was the big recruit from that school that both he and O'neil went to. Maybe, but you have to give the coaches credit for seeing enough talent in O'Neil to bring him in, even if he wasn't a hotshot recruit. And if it wasn't Wine personally that saw him, Wine was the one that hired his assistants.

Finally, you said that with the new facility, there should be more big time recruits coming to Penn State. Well, I certainly agree, but this just isn't going to happen overnight. Penn State isn't a "name" school for baseball like Miami, Texas, Arizona St., etc. You still gotta compete with the tradition, not to mention weather, of those schools, and that's not in our favor. You can't build a big-time program overnight in any sport and Penn State has never been such in baseball. I can tell you, that I think that some of these kids that have come into the program in the last couple of years, like an O'Neil, Deese, Wanamaker, etc. probably wouldn't have if we were still playing at Beaver Field.
