Hindy
by ronne (no login)
Anybody know what Hindy is up to these days? He's old so maybe just doing the breakfast thing in the mornings and hanging out?
Penn State is really looking horrible against Michigan. Those pitchers with Coach Bell as their coach don't have a prayer. Penn State is falling apart and fast!!! Wino needs help too...maybe Wine's Vineyard is a reflextion on how much WINE is in his life and he gets a little distracted! He's a joke.
Yeah, we don't have a baseball team, but no need to get personal. The fact that there is no comments here means that nobody is that interested in boring PSU baseball.
But remember "if they build it, they will come" - just like hoops getting a big venue, it means nothing. Big a$$ stadiums mean nothing. And nothing will change for baseball. Bottom line is that PSU baseball is still same old nothing as it always was.
At least with Hindy we had stuff to make fun of. Now it's just plain boring. But I went yesterday and there was nothing festive at all. Really boring.
No need to be that ignorant yourself. I was there on Saturday as well and you say noting festive? There were over 2,000 people there, which is more than they ever got even on a good day during the "good ole days" (as some here likely think of them) at Beaver Field. I agree the team didn't give them much to cheer about with their lack of hitting on Saturday but give me a break. If you're been there when the team has given the crowd something to cheer about, which I doubt you have been given your comments, you'd know that it's a great atmosphere, much better than anything Beaver Field ever offered.
You're amazing how you think you know what I am thinking. It's a beautiful ball park, be we got little to brag about on the field. Unless you think in my mind I really mean something else. LMAO
No need to waste your time and money going to the games. There are plenty of other people who will, like the 2000+ that went to the games on Saturday and helped the team rank in the top 50 in the country in home attendance last year. You may hate it, but this program is in much better shape than the Hindy/beaver field era.
I'm sorry but seriously did Wine have anything to do with the stadium being built...I honestly don't know. That being said I simply think the teams from the past were better top to bottom. Maybe the coaching wasn't better but the results sure were. I think it’s safe to say that if they had this stadium ten or fifteen years people would have shown up.
I knew Hindy and when he started at Penn State I think he knew he would be a lifer in Central, PA. Most don't know that Hindy was almost directly responsible for the new stadium. Ask Lubrano.
I think Wine looks at Penn State as a stepping stone to future endeavors.
I personally know that "Hindy" as you all seem to call him was extremely involved in the designing/fundraising for the new park. And a message to you all you Hindy-haters: you all have NO IDEA what you are talking about when you question his integrity and state his past postion as a "bad figurehead." He made the team what it was and brought them all the way to the super-regionals, which is much more than can be said now-a-days.
You can say what you want about Hindelang. I know there are some people that liked him but I found him to be arrogant and condescending. Yeah the team went pretty far at times but I believe that was due to his coaches rather than him. We was pretty much a running joke. He also must hold the "record" for coaching third and getting runners thrown out at third or home especially when we needed the runs!
I am glad you love him but I'll bet you didn't have to deal with him.
For your information, I dealt with him on a regular basis. And for the "record" of getting people thrown out? Everybody makes bad decisions, but I believe his winning record far outweighs his occasional bad call.
I was great fun to laugh at him. Ole "Howdy Doody" was a favorite target of fans and visiting teams. He reinforced the concept of the "red-headed step-child". Actually sometimes I felt bad for him, but his team success was actually due to Ditch and Ford. He was simply along for the ride. Ah, I wish the guy luck in his old age. He had a few good points.
Is coach Hindelang still alive? I know he is a local sports hero in Philadelphia and in my South Philly neighberhood. I believe he is revered for his athletic ability here. What is the scopp on him in recent years? and where did he die if he did. I thank you for the informationu.
Coach Hindelang is very much alive and well. He is currently still in New Jersey, where he has been since his retirement from Penn State and was the pitching coach for Lawrenceville Prep last season.
It might be hard to win, but PSU is a big school and we're getting clobbered by some tiny northern schools. Whether Hindy or Winey, the coaching is awful for PSU. We can live for conference play, but man oh man, this is Penn State, for God's sake.
agreed it's not easy to win...that being said no school from a BCS conference should ever lose to an IVY in anything maybe except cross country skiing.
Look at Wine's recruits over the years they haven't produced. Last year the best players were Hindy's recruits. This year Ernst and Blackburn are the best players and they aren't Wine's recruits either. This is year 4 for this group we should see these recruits doing something. What are these JUCO guys doing for the program nothing but taking up spots from players from around the region. Obviously those players around the region are okay because they are beating the team now with other teams.
Yea I guess Drew O'Neil is a complete chump. I sure would like some mediocre local kid on the team in place of him. I'm sure he's taking the spot on the roster of some local high school kid. Who would want an 8th round draft pick on your team? I'm sure ole Hindy would have been able to bring in a kid like O'Neil.
People need to grow up and realize that Wine is not the answer for PSU baseball. He has s#$t on so many of the local kids and the surrounding community. The guy is full of excuses. He has had four years to bring in his guys and it hasn't worked for him. FYI: O'neal was a walk-on that coach Folmar was responsible for bringing in. I wish people truly knew the facts because they would be appalled at the unprofessionalism in the PSU program led by Wine.
O'Neil was a walk-on? Some kid from Georgia just decides to come to Penn State of all places and as a walk-on? I would highly doubt that a kid as talented as him that was good enough to be drafted in the 8th round would go so far away from home just to walk-on and that we would have slipped through the cracks that much. I also highly doubt that your information is reliable. You sound to me like a Hindy loyalist who longs for the days of mediocrity at old Beaver Field. Oh well, at least we had local kids back in those days.
Oh, and how is it that Wine has s*&% on the local kids. They only have three different kids from State College on the team and one from Bellefonte. That's not bad in my book for local kids, especially given that high school baseball in this area isn't all that great. Would you prefer the team be made up all all Centre County kids? How do claim to know that Wine runs his program unprofessionally? Have you been a part of the program? Did he kick your mediocre-talented kid off the team when he took over for Hindy? That must be why you don't like him.
Granted, the team has to get their act together this year. It hasn't been pretty. But it is quite comical to read and listen to all the Hindy loyalists who obviously have an ax to grind come out when the team is struggling. It'll be funny when you all have to shut up when the team goes on a run later in the season just like they did last year.
I will give you that O'Neil is a great talent. No arguments there. But he came from the same JUCO as Mike Deese and that was the big recruit from that school not O'Neil. I am by no means a Hindy loyalist I am just a fan who wants the team to be able to beat Casinius or sweep Lehigh or beat Cornell. When I said local I meant talent around the northeastern region. Centre County is not the answer for this program but there is plenty of talent in PA, OH, MD, NJ and NY for this team to be good. Lots of the players are from around there but obviously not the right ones. I hope the team goes on a late run and turns this boat around. With a new facility I feel like there should be more big time recruits coming into the school. To tell you the truth I do not care who is coach I just want to see a winner. I want to see Penn State win the Big Ten and make a regional. Go Penn State and beat the Buckeyes this weekend.
Well we have one thing in common then, that we both want to see the team do well.
You claim not be a Hindy loyalist and that you don't care who the coach is. I'll take you at your word but I'm not so sure about some of the other people on this board. So, let's look at this argument from a factual standpoint.
You think that these JUCO guys and some guys from around the country haven't produced so we should go back to just recruiting northeastern region kids. Well, if you look at the roster, they have 16 kids from PA, by far the most of any state, in addition to three from NY and one from CT. One guy in next year's freshman class is from PA and one is from NJ. Two of our current JUCO guys are from NY, including a guy that was previously drafted and probably will be again in Mike Wanamaker. The other NY kid is Picconi, who if you saw him play last year, is a solid player. They've also gotten two of the top high school pitchers in the state the last two years in Karr and Grumley. The best high schools kids, such as that catcher from Punxustawny last year, are signing pro contracts. I think this staff has done a decent job of keeping the next-best group of PA kids.
Now, has every recruit Wine and co. have brought in worked out? No. Some of his guys have been disappointments and the book is still out on some of them. But you can't tell me every recruit, local or otherwise, that Hindy brought in worked out perfectly. Let's wait until the end of a long season to make any judgements about Wine's recruits in general.
Also, you say the Deese was the big recruit from that school that both he and O'neil went to. Maybe, but you have to give the coaches credit for seeing enough talent in O'Neil to bring him in, even if he wasn't a hotshot recruit. And if it wasn't Wine personally that saw him, Wine was the one that hired his assistants.
Finally, you said that with the new facility, there should be more big time recruits coming to Penn State. Well, I certainly agree, but this just isn't going to happen overnight. Penn State isn't a "name" school for baseball like Miami, Texas, Arizona St., etc. You still gotta compete with the tradition, not to mention weather, of those schools, and that's not in our favor. You can't build a big-time program overnight in any sport and Penn State has never been such in baseball. I can tell you, that I think that some of these kids that have come into the program in the last couple of years, like an O'Neil, Deese, Wanamaker, etc. probably wouldn't have if we were still playing at Beaver Field.
I'm certainly no Hindy Loyalist. He was a figurehead and not a good one at that. I am a Randy Ford and Jeff Ditch loyalist. This guys had phenomenal personalities and loved baseball and the kids and could relate to them. The record under those guys working together speaks for itself. Too bad they aren't still here and with the new stadium. I think it would have made a difference and quickly.
I wish I had an answer for the lackluster performance under Wine, but I don't. Maybe he came at a reasonable price and that was good enough for the Athletics Department.
Heard that Joe. H. snuck out of retirement and is the pitching coach at Lawrenceville Prep in Princeton,NJ. I hope he is enjoying the easy life.
Miss you coach!
From what I remember, Nate Bump was heading to PSU no matter what. I can't blame Hindy for wanting to take credit for that big coup, but that was a given. The part about being head coach is that you get credit for when things are good and the crap when things are bad.
I went back and read an article about Nate Bump at the Gopsusports site from his last year. He was drafted 17th round and not even offered to have his last year of college paid for by the Red Sox. (according to the article, not a real solid offer) So it was a no brainier for him to return for his last year, and he did the best with his opportunity.
On the other hand.....
ONeil was taken in the 8th round, offered significant money from what I have heard, and still decided to hang in with the Wine and company for his final year. Big gamble, but he obviously has confidence in the coaching staff and the rest of the team to stay. Don't know if that would have happened under others, and really don't care.
This team did not do to bad last year either. Tied for 2nd in B-10.
I believe they will be in a similar situation (hopefully) at the end of this year as well. Going out on a limb after the slow start so far.
I also read an article on the Big Ten web site about ONeil recently. Seems it is true that he was a recruited walk on. His Juco Teammate (Deese) told the coach's to take a serious look at him. Looks like it worked out well for all involved.
Final point, ALL head coach's rely heavily on the assistant coach's to recruit. Can't be in 10 places at once. I believe all of the teams coach's go out and evaluate talent. Then they have to qualify the talent. After evaluations, and qualifing the talent, then it comes down to convincing the talent to sign. No easy task. Lets see, last week we played Purdue in 30+ degree weather with rain and snow. Thats a great selling point.....
Lets see what happens the remainder of the year and next year. I believe good things are headed our way.
Bump was offered a partial scholarship to Penn State during his senior high school year. Hindelang gave him a deadline to accept and he ignored the offer. Late in the year Bump decided to reconsider and attend Penn State. All scholarship money was gone. Bump received no money his freshman year.
As a person who follows these transactions, you will see that many players are assigned and reassigned to make room on the team. It is a paper move. Just look down through the transactions and you will see that all the teams do that.
Bump is still with the Defenders.
Wine's Vineyard must be pulling the team through, can't believe they won last weekend. Good old Wino must be smiling although I'm sure he still loses sleep at night.
