I was having this same debate with myself when I was pulling together my all-neutral party. In the end, I'm not disappointed that I went with Cernd. He can learn those clericky healing spells, he also has better summons than the average cleric (unless you're trying to summon undead), and can do those neato insect swarm spells. There's nothing sweeter than watching a dragon lose morale and run away because it failed its breath weapon save from your insect plague.
And if you need him to be, he can be a pretty good melee fighter with his (greater) werewolf shapeshifts. Slightly amusing glitch: if you become the hero of Trademeet, make sure that you have Cernd shapeshifted as a werewolf when you talk to Lord Logan.
