| No, I did introduce myself when I was first asked. I may have done so in a somewhat roundabout way, but I did answer the question.
I don't know how many boards you've been to, but "standard" etiquette changes from board to board by quite a fair margin. Some boards are so lawless and insane that an "acceptable" introduction would involved endless leet-speak and babble about nothing at all, rather than having some sort of point. Others are so draconian that if you don't bow down before the mods and admins, you're banned, no questions asked. I'm not talking about reasonable stuff either, like not picking fights, I'm talking about down and out opression of alternative opinions.
I was in a wacky mood when I was directed here, so I retained it. I toned it back a bit, but I figured that considering what you all do here, you might get a bit of a kick out of it. I was wrong, and so I've stopped.
I understand Cosmos' point, but the fact of the matter is that there was obviously a problem, one where no one in specific is really to blame. I made note of the point where I made a mistake and recognized the cause, and am suggesting a solution to avoid that sort of problem happening again in the future.
And if someone came on to my board and started saying "hey, you should change this to X!", I would take the suggestion into consideration, since I generally attempt to accomodate new members. If the suggestion was not practical or would require too much effort for not enough return, I would explain to the newbie in question why I would or could not implement it, and then the matter is usually closed.
I did have an instance of an extereme example of this, however. I had not yet updated my boards to the latest version of phpBB, and so to "notify" me of the error of my ways, some jackass broke in through an exploit of my current version and wiped out my database, completely taking down my forums. That did piss me off, because so much data had been lost in the process that can now never be restored. | |
