Russ Hellickson, head wrestling coach at Ohio State University, will be the keynote speaker as the second annual Mid-South Wrestling Coaches Clinic is set to take place October 18-19 at Franklin High School.
Hellickson, who has been Ohio State’s head coach for 15 years, led the Buckeyes to a sixth-place finish in the NCAA Championships last spring.
A jam-packed roster of clinicians, including some of the top high school coaches in Tennessee, highlight this year’s clinic. Last fall’s clinic, originated by Franklin High head coach Jon Hill, exceeded expectations with 72 coaches in attendance.
Hellickson’s remarks highlight the Friday night kickoff session, with a full day of on-the-mat clinic sessions scheduled for Saturday. New University of Tennessee-Chattanooga head coach Terry Brands will be one of the clinicians. Also featured is Keith Massey, who led Council Bluffs Lewis Central High to statewide and national prominence the past several years. Massey, whose prize pupils over the years include former Junior National champions David Kjeldgaard and this year’s 152-pound co-Junior National champions, Trent and Travis Paulson, has been the head coach of the Iowa Cadet and Junior National Greco-Roman teams for nearly 10 years, and four of his wrestlers were Cadet or Junior National All-Americans this year. Under Massey’s direction, Lewis Central was one of the nation’s top five teams in 2001 and was back-to-back Class 3A state champions in 2000 and 2001. He resigned as Lewis Central’s head coach after last season to devote full time to coaching his club, the Golden Eagles.
Also on the schedule are Tennessee high school coaches Tommy Badon of Dickson County, Gordon Connell of McCallie, Steve Henry of Soddy Daisy, Richie Houston of Farragut, and Chris Lewis of Christian Brothers.
The cost of the clinic is $75.00, and there is also a $150.00 per school rate for up to three coaches. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18.
