Disadvantes of being short--list them here so that we always know what we're fighting.

Can you guys list the reasons why you don't want to be short, other than sexual attraction and physical appearances... This will piss a lot of you off, but I'm going to use this as a way to inspire me to exercise more and find a way to get taller. Being 18, every one is advising me not to get limb lengthening, and that the possibilites of disaster are too high...
Here are a few of mine which I never forget, and fuel my anger thoughout every day:
Short people look incompetent.
A lack of respect from peers and co-workers.
Lack of intimidation--people won't be afraid to stand up to you.
Low self-esteem
No confidence
Having to watch crowds of people tower over you as you walk by.
Having to ask others to reach items for you at the market (book store for me)
Having to use a chair to change a lightbulb that hangs low on a chain.
Having to sit almost a foot ahead of the passenger when driving.
Having to be pressed up against the steering wheel.
Having to sit on the end aisles in movie theatres to see the full screen.
Not being able to see any part of the hood of my car.
Not being able to wholly look over the counter at Blockbuster Video.
Not making the football/basketball team (skill is nothing without height)
I swear I can't find any clothes that fit me (every store in 3 malls)
Feeling like a kid.
Let's hear yours. None of us can pretend that we're not bothered by it, otherwise we wouldn't be at this forum.
Re: Disadvantes of being short--list them here so that we always know what we're fighting.

Actually... to be honest I'm not really that bothered about my height. I'm 5'7 and for me it is a bit short but nothing that makes me lose sleep. In fact I'd just like to grow taller for the sake of it. You know, like the way you buy accessories for your car so you can show off. Maybe something like that.
I'd say I'm a pretty confident guy regardless of my height. Then again I've got a gf who's 5'1 and according to scientists we're the perfect height match (male should be 1.09 times taller than female)! Haha! Also as I'm chinese, when I go back to Hong Kong for holidays it's not so bad. I'm usually around above average height. In fact my lack of complete fluency in cantonese bothers me more than my height.
I guess another reason is also curiosity. I just want to know if it's possible and I'd like to show that it is possible! Don't give up hope guys! We'll find something some day!

Ah, Jas, that's a poor comment man... If you mean that in reference to me saying I was dropped from the team because of my height, then i think you would understand how much of a hassel it is to deal with.
I'm sure the UK has short guys playing ball a lot, but the fact that I can't even enjoy my high school experience because of it is pathetic.

Then why the hell are you here? did you just by chance happen to end up at a height forum, while you're coincidentally short?
People come here because they already feel bad and want to do something about it. Duh.

Yeah, but here in the UK people are different, are school basketball team has around 6 players less than 5'6 and they still play good against 6 footers. The team played another team from America last summer and we still beat them.

Yep, I second that. Back when I was still in grammar school, we tried to set up a basketball team. Most of them were guys from HK, cause they're like really into it. We played against local teams and uni teams and still managed to beat them. BTW, the majority of us were probably around 5'5.
This guy who was in my class was amazing, (had a huge temper and attitude problem, although he was alright once you got to know him) was about an inch or two taller than me. Back then it would've been about 5'7 maybe 5'8 but I remember in a game he managed to slam dunk... Completely bust himself yes... but nonetheless he slamdunked. Although he was pretty thin so he could fly with ease... I know, completely off on a tangent but anyways! So there! Even if you're short you can still slam dunk!!! (just need to be super light! )

-walking with your friends even thou , they are taller than you are.
- when people dont know your name and they wanna point at you , they say " the short guy ".
- getting rejected by women because of your height.
- standing with girls who are taller or your height.
-when buying new clothes , you are not excited .
- being short makes you less confedence, and you have that felling of a missing thing inside you.
- people treat you with a less respect than taller men.
-you feel like life is unfair , and god dont give a damn about you.
- you feel incomplete and you cant concentrate on anything else .

"you feel incomplete and you cant concentrate on anything else." In school I stare at the board my teacher is teaching us on but it doesn't come to me as it used to, before my height obesession. Always wanting to be 6'4(ever since I could remember) and not being anywhere near that height now is a big let down.

5"7 is a good height for guys I think...n e way I hate goin 2 like clothing stores in the mall...their sizes for jeans are like 0 to 10 or sumthin...size 0 pants 2 huge on me by like 4/5 inches...I hate it...then in the kids section at department stores...size 10/12 jeans r like long on me by 3/4 inches...so I cut slits in all my jeans at the bottom n they still drag down 2 like my toes almost or past em ...my parents get really mad n my brother just laughs...its their fault they didnt take me 2 the doctors when I asked them too

Here's a note about clothes retailers
May 18 2005, 5:31 PM
Clothes manufacturers will not cater to short people. The reason why they won't produce clothes for shorter people is because, as pathetic as it sounds, they can't make enough of a profit.
Only 3% of the male population in this country is my height, at 5'4. That's not enough for them to make money, so they don't produce clothes that will fit us.

i went shopping about a year ago and bought these jeans, they were so ridiculous!! they were like 12+ inches too long for my legs but the right size around my waist, and im not fat or anything but omg who has legs like that!?
im about 1/2 inch taller than i used to be cos im almost as tall as my friend and im taller than my other friend yay!!
Re: Disadvantes of being short--list them here so that we always know what we're fighting.
May 26 2005, 6:37 PM
i agree with all the points made so far. it really sucks to be the only sub-6-footer in my group of friends (im 5'5"). i'm sure it looks like i'm one of their little brothers. people constantly tell me i look like i'm 12 (i'm 21).
i hate seeing a cute short girl with a really tall guy. and i hate how a lot of people automatically think that short guys have a 'napolean complex' or 'little mas syndrome' if they are grumpy or lift weights.
clothes aren't too big of a problem for me, except for dress shirts. the sleeves are always a couple inches too long. does anyone else have this problem?

I'm not trying to invalidate your feelings of being at a disadvantage, but it sounds like you're being really hard on yourself. A lot of things in life depend upon one's perception of things. Yeah in this shallow minded culture it's always easy to confirm your beliefs that being "short" is a big disadvantage, but it's up to you whether or not you'll believe that garbage.
But that's exactly the point, per your words, "A lot of things in life depend upon one's perception of things." That's exactly why it sucks to be short, because of the way others perceive you. You can change how you feel about your own height, and I agree with you, you can make it alot harder on yourself, but you can't do a damned thing about what this shallow culture thinks, and as result does to you based on height.

To SS,
One of the things I think we all overlook in this forum is that what we consider short (5'7") is actually average height for males in the US. However our media would never endorse this truth. I think the height perception issue is similar to the eating disorder issue.
Have you noticed how people, mainly girls, think they are so fat? That's because they are used to seeing thin women in the media.
My guess is that most of the people in this forum are not as tall as they'd like to be, and most of the time they are percieving themselves as extremely short because of all the distortion the money driven media forces down our throats. Think about this, if the media didn't force people to become insecure with their exaggerated version of reality, what could their sponsors sell you?
In the end it is your own perogative if you think you need to grow taller. However, I think it is just as important to become conscious of why you feel you need these additional inches.
Don't allow this dysfunctional society to dictate every perception within your scope of reality. It equates to mental tyranny.

5'9.5" is the average make height in the US. Does that help to make you feel shorter?
ya the average height is 5'9, in the states,
anyways i'm a dude, i'm 20, and i 'almost' reach 5'9....but still i hate the fact that i'm 'average' height..i feel..just i dunno, and james, being 5'5, well i read your other messages on the topic u made about the bone leangthing surgery, go for it man,
money shouldn't be an issue, your self esteem matters most no matter what man, if your 5'5, and u get the 4 inches done, then hey, you'll be my height( still which i dont like) its average, but ya,if i were 5'5 and i went up to 5'9, hell i'd be psyched bro. i wish i were 5'11 or 6'0, thats my dream height, and for now, before u get the surgery, u can always where shoes with at least a 3 inch lift making u 5'7. i mean i myself where shoes that make me 2 1/2 inches taller...they're called LUGZ and a gel insole inside.lol
but yah,
fuck isn't there anything that can make u grow talle
besides that suergey shit!?

raven i agree, though i'm a bit taller.. and i just have one point to the guy who said one of the disadvantages was being dissed by taller girls.. no girl, no matter if she's like 6'5, would go for a shorter guy, even if he's like 6'4, unless he's super hot.. i don't even understand why u would approach taller girls, i don't think its fun for a guy walking around with a girl who's taller than him..

That's such shit. Shorter guys do not try harder. That's all in your head. Have you ever dated a taller guy long enough to really say for certain? I don't think so, twit.

Short guys are generally more angry so they'll snap sooner than taller guys. If you find that shorter guys are trying harder maybe it means more that you tend to take them more for granted and when you're around taller guys you get more ass-kissy, no?

Re: Disadvantes of being short--list them here so that we always know what we're fighting.

I think we are way too conditioned on height. People think being real tall is superior but it's definitely all in people's heads. And girls wanting tall guys is because the majority are insecure and brainwashed as well. I've seen smaller guys out-muscle/out fighter much bigger guys so that part crushes the "taller is better" part. Taller guys don't have bigger wangs which is also a stupid belief. And before people even mentioned it, I never thought a taller girl with a smaller guy was that strange. Don't relationships based on respect for a human matter anymore?
It's all society people, always wanting to compete. I'm also in the game of wanting to better myself but I'm going to be reasonable. If it can't be done I'm not going to cry about it. Be happy that you are you.
(to those who mentioned you don't get as much respect as a taller guy, you must be hanging with some shallow people. These schmucks will do nothing but bring you down, find some more down to earth people)

You have pretty well noted up there everything we need to tell, still I would like to enlight the lack of self-confidence from my own experiences...
And I'd also like you know about the message title too. If so, 5"9' is not bad at all for most between us...

Well, I’ve been like 5'7 since around 15 years old and it hasn't really affected me in any way or been a problem up until 17, when I started driving, and now at 18, it feels really awkward when I go into bars/ clubs, and it just feels really weird when I’m looking up at most people, and a lot of the women are my height too^^; plus the average male height here is 178, and it just feels like I don't belong there. Any older guy's know what I’m goin’ on about here lol? anywayz, idk. Just a self-confidence/ inadequacy problem I guess.

Not to be an asinine hole, but i know its says average is 5'9 1/2, but its i think if it was updated by a nationwide concenscus in the U.s., it would be probably 6 foot now, people are really tall around here, only a small majority of you come in these forums complaining about ur height, but your the ones that kill the curve, and mugsy bogues, and all those small oldheads

After all, there's an ultimate method that can make you 178 cm taller -as much as Ewan McGregor- and put an end to your agonies, the surgery.
Pay 30000$, you'll have what yoU've always wanted and no one will ever know that unless you tell it.
But who wants to mput parts of METAL in his bones and live with them, like a cyborg?
