First of all, thanks to Sirian for posting the correct link to my page; would you believe that I couldn't test whether the right address was RBCiv2 or RBCiv2_index due to the page being down? And I wasn't going to wait an hour for it to restore either.
When reading Sirian's game, I also couldn't help but think "Those city sites look familiar..." I put my cities in almost exactly the same places - does this mean I graduate from dot-map school?
As for settling the land to the west, I blockaded one Russian settler for about 10 turns and another one for at least 30 turns. I have no idea where that one was heading, but it never got there. Don't forget that I essentially traded away Alphabet in exchange for a Russian worker, which I believe did wonders to slow them down. I was also surprised by the slowness of Russia; it led me to believe that they had a lot of land down past their chokepoint city.
Civ3's broken diplomacy cut me pretty hard in the game as well. I broke the one deal, and every other civ was pretty much permanently furious for the rest of the game. I actually never declared war on anyone ever in my game, though you'd never think that from looking at the diplomacy screen. The only other dastardly action was razing cities, which I would have avoided doing otherwise. I really did think I could play the game out honorably, but I gave it up for a leader. The positives tended to balance out the negatives from that action pretty evenly on that decision.
Japanese warriors... I'm not even going there. I bet that was HILARIOUSLY
funny for everyone reading it - not so cool during the game. I would have kicked Russia off the continent a good 30 turns earlier without them there.
As for T-Hawk's comments, I didn't go for the Missile Defense because I wasn't going to sit around with the ship ready to launch and not do so - it wouldn't be in the spirit of the game. Going for AEGIS Crusiers was fair for me, since it represented a diversion from the spaceship path. And I had never built one before, so I wanted to see what they were like.
But just sitting around, not winning the game to get more points? I went through that in GOTM8, and I'm not going to do it again. If I CAN win, I'm GOING to win from now on. barring exceptional circumstances.
No other middle-age wonders, because I normally don't build them and I'm kind of just used to playing without them by now. I could have had Smith's too if I had just done an intelligent prebuild...
Other games out there were... unusual. I'm hoping we get some more reports in soon, because this was a fun game and it would be a shame if only 5 people played it. Sirian beat me with a peaceful (mostly) honorable game, T-Hawk played very similarly to me without the leaders, smegged didn't finish out of frustration, and Cy... no one else plays the game like Cy.
So is anyone else going to post a game report?
