Response to Old college try...

There might have to be more than two games, even. I picked you to lead one of the extra games because I know you have MOO experience and fanaticism. I would want the teams balanced, rather than stacking all the old timers on one team, etc.

I have a vision in mind for this thing, starting with playing as Humans (for all the teams). I really need to get the game and have a good look at the options lists before final decisions on game settings: map size, galaxy type, number of opponents, etc etc. I've read about the options, but the game has gone through changes and the information out there is not current. I started out thinking just one game, but there is a lot of interest, it seems, and I don't want to leave anybody who wants some of the action out in the cold.

I also want to ensure both a playable start and a quality opportunity for each game and each team. I don't yet know what all might go into that. I don't one team playing RBE1 max food start while another is playing RBE2 sardine can start. Middle of the road is the goal, and just what that means is unknown. Taking on "extra challenge" and "poor starting position" are not on my list of desirables for the first game. I'll try to keep the Heavy Foot of Sirian to a minimum, but if my early look around indicates to me that I should do more than just pick the map size, well... I want to have a look before finalizing plans.

As for the rosters... started out expecting one roster, now may end up with three or more. One more thing to "wait and see": how many sign up, and how many of those who do actually get the game on time and ready to roll. I'll try to make sure everyone gets into a situation they'll be happy with.

  Tourney Mission Statement:
Existing Civ III tournaments, contests and group events are universally plagued by elements or shortcomings that lead often to compartmentalized results. Spoilers and privileged info is readily made available while games are still in progress. The game itself remains in flux through a patching process. The scoring system measures only a few elements of the gameplay. We at Realms Beyond are not satisfied to settle for these conditions and compromises.

The Realms Beyond is home to gamers who go beyond the norm, who creatively add depth to good games to make them better, who choose to set our own added limits to gameplay for the purpose of increasing challenge, varying gameplay flavor, and getting more out of the games we love. We discard the usual standards and venture into realms beyond, where we share our passion for gaming with one another, and with those who are like-minded.

We develop and refine our tournament as we go, with the help of the players. Each game is subject to rules, but we keep the framework light, the emphasis on excellence, the focus on the spirit of the game. Come and play. Share, compare, teach, and learn.
