Response to Dealbreaker

From the perspective of a new RBCiver, it sucks that you, Sirian, the most active Epic player and sponsor, is bowing out of C3C. I can understand your anger on having Universal Suffrage taken away from you and how much that messed up your plans, but it's too bad you let it get to you so much that you didn't finish.

I definitely think that an option should be included in the editor to disable wonder rushing, so that tournament games like the Epics can continue to be comparable. However, if they're taken out of the main game in a patch then I'll definitely be re-enabling wonder rushing in the editor. Maybe it sounds a little macho, but I would enjoy it if the AI came out of nowhere and rushed a Wonder that I desperately needed and had been painstakingly pre-building over the past 30 turns. Why? Simply because that would teach me not to depend so much upon a Wonder in my strategic planning. Wonders really aren't necessary, and the potential of missing out on one can be made up for by good strategy. Solid infrastructure, good trading, and a balanced military will overcome any missed Wonder.

That's what I like about SGLs and wonder rushing - they serve as a good monkey wrench and make you think twice about your strategy, especially if you're not in the tech lead. It adds an extra dimension and an extra challenge.

But anyway, back to the Epics. With Sirian out, I hope that past sponsors (T-Hawk, Charis, Griselda) will continue on with the tournament. Bunches of us new players have come out of the woodwork for the first C3C epic - and I'm sure all of us are waiting with baited breath for the next one!

EDITS: Various typos. Sleep more need now . . .

  Tourney Mission Statement:
Existing Civ III tournaments, contests and group events are universally plagued by elements or shortcomings that lead often to compartmentalized results. Spoilers and privileged info is readily made available while games are still in progress. The game itself remains in flux through a patching process. The scoring system measures only a few elements of the gameplay. We at Realms Beyond are not satisfied to settle for these conditions and compromises.

The Realms Beyond is home to gamers who go beyond the norm, who creatively add depth to good games to make them better, who choose to set our own added limits to gameplay for the purpose of increasing challenge, varying gameplay flavor, and getting more out of the games we love. We discard the usual standards and venture into realms beyond, where we share our passion for gaming with one another, and with those who are like-minded.

We develop and refine our tournament as we go, with the help of the players. Each game is subject to rules, but we keep the framework light, the emphasis on excellence, the focus on the spirit of the game. Come and play. Share, compare, teach, and learn.
