I may have to choose between seeing them for the July 6th show at Genghis Cohen the July 13th show at 14 Below so I was wondering which would be the better show to catch.
I guess it's just a choice of which you like better. I prefer the whole band, Mike, Ken and all those random guests. Not that I don't love the duo. I saw them at Highland grounds and it was awesome. But if I had to choose, I would go for the whole band at 14Below. But then again, the duo thing is always so intimate, sooo.....

I'd go to Cohen
June 21 2002, 6:34 PM
I've never been to Genghis Cohen before, but I've been to 14 Below enough times to know that it is an incredibly unpleasant dive. I'd rather see them just about anywhere else; Below hike up their ticket prices (especially when Marsters is playing) just because they can, the atmosphere's terrible, it's usually unbearably hot and overcrowded because they oversell their expensive tickets, and when Marsters is opening for Common Ro you get a certain crazed Buffy-fan element (most Buffy fans are cool, but some of this guy's fans are just assholes) and they create a totally unpleasant vibe. I'd rather go to Molly's, Highland Grounds, or any of a number of tiny venues than set foot in 14 Below again. Or, better yet, I'd love to see the band at The Knitting Factory, The Gig, The Key Club... there's so many places in LA that don't completely suck the llama's ass, it's a crying shame they're going back there again.

I'll probably go to Cohen...
June 21 2002, 9:22 PM
because I really want to see Adam and Eric do their acoustic performance. I've always seen them with the band and I think it will be awesome to see just them.
And I agree about 14 Below...when I went there there was a lot of pushy people, esp. as James' show, and it was hot and overcrowded. I prefer Common Ro at Hard Rock Cafe but those are the only two places I've seen them so I'm sure lots of other venues are great as well.

June 22 2002, 12:41 AM
I've seen the band twice and Adam & Eric twice ( and the professor). The acustic are way more fun, if you ask me, but then again I love the base player.
BTW, I'd love to see them at the key club. The 14Below is a pain in the ass.
I think I prefer them at Molly's (maybe it's because my friends and I were able to take over the booth right below the stage every time Common Ro played there). I agree with everyone when they say 14 Below is crowded and a pain in the a$$ especially when James is playing too. I have to say the only other places I love them the best were the acoustic song (First Time) at Dangerous Visions and the American Legion Hall for PBP.

I'm interested in hearing other places people like to see them. I've decided on Cohen anyways. :)It'll be cool to see them somewhere new. I've only seen them, as I said before at the Hard Rock Cafe, 14 Below, and the PBP.

Yay
June 22 2002, 3:07 PM
I'm happy we're already to the point where we can discuss this in earnest, practically instead of theoretically. Two weeks isn't so long, right? I'm sad my sister and her fiancee missed them, but I played the CD for them and two other friends who were here... all impressed, and they loved how you could see the band's energy/enthusiasm even through pictures. Oh, how pale they are by comparison to the real show! One friend said the ideal world would involve their playing a local pub each evening of the week, but I'll take once a week (my ideal world would involve not less than that) as something to look forward to.
I've been thinking of heading back to Oregon, but I can't yet - not unless the guys make a northward trip every couple of months or so, and bring all my friends with them, as well as the much more abundant sunshine. Not too likely, huh? Okay, well, SoCal it is for a while yet then...
Looking forward to your visit no matter which weekend you come, Briel! And looking forward to the shows, hoping there'll be another one at Hard Rock before too long. (The best Oklahoma yet, am I right?)

Why Choose?
June 22 2002, 11:41 PM
I don't understand why one would have to choose? Why can't you go to both. Is it a funds thing? Do you budget this far in advance or is there only so much Common Rotation you can take. Why choose? Go to both. Like me.

Because...

I live like 7 hours away. :D If I could I'd got to every show! And I really can't stay in L.A. for that long so choose I must.

Unpleasant dive??
June 23 2002, 3:26 PM
WOW... It saddens me to see some of you that upset with me club...
I do know how uncomfortable the last show was, and because of this James Marsters shows and Common Rotation shows will take place on different nights... Secondly, we had an a/c problem on the last show but that has been fixed and is now quite comfortable...
I would encourage you to give the club another chance, or at least e-mail me a tangible criticism instead of "sucking a llamas ass", etc...

the llama wants it's ass back now
June 24 2002, 5:40 PM
i've been to 14 below lots of times Scott. I've given it lots of chances. I haven't had a good time there in quite awhile and never liked the club for itself, i only ever went for the acts playing there, so i'd hardly stop in to watch the world cup or lakers games even if it was my local. I think I made pretty clear all the reasons (or at least most of the reasons, because I'm trying to remain a little polite) that I think 14 below sucks the llama's ass and really don't think I need to go into it in email... somebody asked a question in a public forum and I'm giving my answer in a public forum. you'll just have to deal with it if that cuts into your hefty profit margins. there have been some good shows but it's been a long time since i could leave 14 below after a show and say that i had fun.

Sorry to hear that
June 24 2002, 7:21 PM
Well, I guess we won't be seeing you in there anytime soon. Sorry I can't offer a better experience for you... There are numerous other clubs in LA that have great bands... I suggest you try them and find the ones that better suit your needs/wants...

14 Below
June 26 2002, 5:29 PM
I paid $10 for both James Marsters and Common Rotation so I doubt anyone was making big money that night. No one wanted to loose their places either, so they weren't buying drinks or food. Where are the big bucks you are talking about? I would think the club looses money with the bigger acts.
I agree that 14 Below is small and can get very crowded. I like a good crowd, not a sardine can, but with some acts, it can't be helped.
The employees are cool and friendly and the prices are good. I'll go back there, no problem.
Peace, Addie

$10 isn't bad, but it isn't usual, either
June 26 2002, 8:59 PM

$10 isn't the usual, or at least it hasn't been lately. the demand for marsters was so high they jacked up prices just because they can, a couple of recent shows were sold at $20 and $15, which i'd gladly pay to see the band in an enjoyable setting but wouldnt pay for that club again. as for losing money, that's just crazy talk - between the exorbitant ticket prices, drinks and food (of course people buy them, big groups of them are in the restaurant from the time it opens until the time it closes because they want to be in the front of the line and they're consuming the entire time, not to mention the people buying drinks at the bar all night), publicity from these bands playing there, this new pay-per-view webcast they're planning and the fact that both bands bring a ready-made audience, they're making a mint. not that they shouldn't make money, they are a business after all, but it's not like they're martyrs for the music. they're packing the place and laughing all the way to the bank. i'm glad that playing with marsters and doing stuff like the pbp has gotten common ro a lot more attention and they're getting into venues where a different crowd can hear them, all i'm saying is that i find 14 below to be an incredibly unpleasant place and would rather see the band play elsewhere (anywhere else basically).

Re: $10 isn't bad, but it isn't usual, either
June 27 2002, 12:07 AM
Just replying to say that 14 Below sure as heck ain't laughing all the way to the bank when they book these artists. They've actually lost money when booking Marsters because of his demand for a cut of the money he asks for these gigs. The last show that Common Ro played with Marsters didn't even sell out until they signed on to play. Even when 14B got robbed, James still wanted his money for the night he played. I mean, when they book 4 bands for one night, they're having to pay out to all these musicians. The webcast was something they were offering to fans of James and Common Rotations's music who couldn't attend the shows. I for one think that's a great idea because I live all the way in Texas and don't get to see them as much as I'd like. (Guys, please come to Texas! Great clubs in Dallas and Austin!!) I don't see any other clubs that cater more to people than this one does. I don't see the Viper Room or The Whiskey offering to webcast their bands so they can get exposure to the rest of the world. Scott has to put up with alot of BS and I think he does a good job considering.
Sorry if this got off topic, but I think if anyone can go to both shows, then they should do so in support of Common Rotation. They're not a fad like James and his Ghost of the Robot band- this band is legit and needs to hit it big time baby!
(no login)
Actually, the $20 ticket was unusual...
June 27 2002, 5:13 AM
I don't mean to be argumentive here, but that ticket was for a show which included Common Ro, Marsters, Urban Family Dog and Four Star Mary - an altogether rockin' night. The tickets for Common Ro's 7.13 show are $8 advance or $10 at the door.
The early crowd waiting for Marsters may purchase dinner at the very reasonably priced OverUnder Sports Grill and a few drinks, but that is usually the extent of it. Once people have their places in the showroom, they don't budge. You also have to remember that the acts are paid from advanced ticket sales, so although I am sorry you've had uncomfortable experiences, it would not be fair to say that anyone is laughing all the way to the bank (certainly not me ... the exceedingly talented web developer - uh, ahem... sorry... got carried away there...) Yea, it is a business and yep, there's profit, but to insinuate that the club takes advantage of certain fanbases is ridiculous. Some acts charge more to play so their ticket prices are higher. Period. (off defensive-type soapbox now)
The webcast program is new and it is exciting, for us, as well as our customers. It is also a major expense for the club. Our goal is that distant fans are able to enjoy live performances regardless of their age or location.
Anyway, nice board you have here.... I think I'll stick around awhile if you'll have me.
This sure has veered from the original intention of the question. LOL Anyways I think that there are many great venues out there for different musical acts and people should just go to the ones that appeal to them and not trash others just because they don't like them for some reason. Constructive criticism is always fine as long as it's in a mature manner.
Anyhoo I'm looking forward to seein' Common Ro July 6th!! :D I wish they were playing more than once that weekend though but I guess once will have to do.

Constructive criticism
June 27 2002, 5:06 PM
Are you implying "sucks the llama's ass" isn't a constructive criticism?
(no login)
Yes
June 28 2002, 12:25 PM
I am implying that "Sucks the Llama's ass" is not constructive.
Ok well here's a good reason why even someone like me, who lives in Orange County couldn't go to both or even all 4 of the new LA shows:
WORK.
I recently started working at Disneyland and since we have hit summer season, the hours have gotten longer and of course that means low level Cast Members, like us Casual Regulars get the crappiest shifts. Also getting Days off is almost impossible. Shift changes are easier but even those don't always pan out. Now I can already tell you I am working July 6th, July 7th, July 13th, and July 27th, I already know it because they are all weekends and CRs especially have to work weekend shifts. So I may be able to get to the show but sometimes my shifts don't end till 1, 2 in the morning.
Now the good news is that I may have gotten my July 6th shift changed (I mean I couldn't miss Adam's b-day now, right? *g*) from my 6-midnight shift to a 5-10:15 shift. Now what this means is you get 20 minutes walking time allowing me to walk at 9:55 and if I get a good lead who will let me go 15 minutes early instead of taking a break, then I am changed and outta the park by 10pm. Meaning if traffic is a good a 40-50 minute drive at most on the freeways getting me to Cohen at round about 10:50/11:00. So at least I'd get to see some of the show and the boys
You may not have wanted this long an answer, but that's another reason people can't always go to the shows. I have no problem distance wise, it's work wise and having to choose which ones I can apply for a shift change for and stuff. And see before I started at Disney ask anyone, I was at all 8 of the LA shows CR did. Including the latest at Highland Grounds (great show by the way!)
So um yeah, you can't leave out those people who have trouble when it comes to work g
Briel and Deb I hope I will see you the 6th!

I'd say Cohen cuz it's a new venue. You have done 14B which while providing a great show does tend to get a bit crowded at times and stuff, but the band always puts on a good one and Scott is always wonderfully accomodating, plus the grill food is good I've heard Cohen is real nice and small much like Mollys. Plus the acoustic performance which is personally my favorite of their performances.
So Briel if I had to choose which I do myself, I'd say Cohen. I know I'm not gonna be able to make the Viper Room (also had a bad experience, Deborah, you remember that eh?) but depending on when I work Sunday I may just try for 14B. Who knows?
Briel you just have to move down to So Cal hon. g

hehe I love them at Mollys too. Just love those hour and a half shows! But they're getting too big for Mollys. You did see how crowded it was last time, right? I mean it's a real small venue so when it gets that crowded, gets hard to move. I do like being able to stand directly in front of the stage and snap pics and have Adam sing right at me (yes he sings to me and only me *g*). Can do that at HRC too, other places not as easy.
My fave place is the Hard Rock. Not a bad cover, you have room to sit, stand, dance, do whatever and they play like a 2 hour set including the fun improv stuff and that great campfire singalong type deal And of course HRC usually has really good food and good service so I have no complaints there
But I hope to be there the 6th! I've heard Cohen is a good place, so I'm hoping I don't make it too late.

Oh, how I remember that!
June 30 2002, 12:32 AM
Yes, I clearly remember that evening - thus my earlier comment about having seen friendly wild boars than the staff at that... "establishment" somehow doesn't seem like the right word. I almost feel it's morally wrong to go back since I found the club probably the most reprehensible place I've ever set foot in... and I've had the misfortune to be in some pretty seedy places. At least most of those don't put on pretensions!
BUUUUUUUUT, I also think it's right to support good bands. whistle Personal enjoyment has nothing to do with it.
On the bright side, it looks like my sister might be here to enjoy next weekend's shows! WOO-HOO! And another friend planned a trip that'll allow her to see the show on the 27th. I'm sad that FOUR friends visited and not one left having had the chance to see this band I'm nuts about, but pleased I'll be able to rectify that in the next few weeks. Woo-hoo!
Looks like my bedroom might be packed next weekend.

Oh yeah Deborah, I was so upset that nite. Bdbdb says that was like a onetime instance though, fluke thing but who knows? I just dunno if I would be able to get up there. Now if I am working a morning shift I will do my damndest to get up there. But I'd be coming alone, so if you are going, lemme know
Basically whether or not I see CR at ALL this summer fully depends on Disneyland. They hold my Common Rotation fate in their hands. (*snicker*)
Let's hope I can make it to this Saturday's gig. I so don't wanna miss this!
So um yeah I'd go to VR anyways only if I can get off but I'll grumble about it that's for sure. Question is "where am I gonna park?" I hated that guy. Ripped me and Abbie off. Moron.
