Hey I was just thinking don't you think that Common rotation would do a kiler version of I WIL SURVIVE well I do ? What do u all think plus what song would you request thme to play that isn't one of theirs???
just bored and thinking hmmm the posibilites....
As for covers, I think I could die happy if they ever covered a song of Voltaire's... like that would happen in a million years! But a girl can dream can't she?

"I will Survive" is one of those songs that I groan when I hear the beginning of it, but then end up singing along and dancing to anyway.
I know I said this once before, roughly forever ago, but I still think Eric would do a great cover of Bill Withers' "Use Me." Better Than Ezra covered the song, too.
Three songs I wanna see them cover, all ballads (they need more ballads like my Mom says)...
"Brick" by Ben Folds Five
"More than Words" by Extreme
"Sad Eyes" (the Enrique version, not the Bruce version though I am sure that one is good too, I prefer Enrique's version *g*)
I can dream right? *g*

Yes, more ballads!
August 14 2002, 1:13 AM
That would be good. They could write them or do covers...Either way would be fine with me!
Eric singing "Brick" .... then again, I can see Adam singing it too. I loved that song for the longest time. Still do, just don't listen to it as often.
What about something by Live like "I Alone?"
More ballads would be good but they have to have passion to them. "More Than Words" just grates on my junior high memories, eek. Sorry, lol.

I think "I Will Survive" should only be sung by men in drag, and frankly, I don't think Adam would look great in a dress.
I like it when they take a cover and make it their own, like "Don't Let's Start" sounds quite a bit different from the original, and sometimes they do rap and stuff and make it a little more harmonious and melodic. Or maybe they should just get down with the funky polka beats.
Would nice to be hear an entire cover of "Barstool" sometime...

LOL. During one of the first acoustic shows, the guys were asking for requests and I remember Tom Lenk screaming something. I think it was I Will Survive.

I agree, not the right band to sing "I Will Survive" Leave that one for the drag queens on Christopher Street or those bears in Nutty Professor 2 whistles neverousnessly hoping no one caught that I actually saw that movie
Also, not a ballad band!!!! So, NOT! Ballads are great, but ONE GOOD BALLAD HAS BEEN WRITTEN AFTER 1982!It's the sad truth. So bring on the funky fresh polka tunes!
Adam in that role. I think he has the better voice for the tones of Brick.
You know Hazard by Richard Marx would be good too
I'm just a ballad lover. I always long to hear a good one *g*

I am curious what ballad you are referring to when you say "one good ballad has been written since 1982" ... i think that was it. just curious since i am not much of a ballad person, but i love lots of music, and i wonder if your opinion of a good ballad matches mine.
Adam emailed me and he told me about this song he heard on the radio
on VHI SOULD by THIKE called "When I Get You Alone" After Adam said "God that was good" i wanted to see
for my self, therefor i downloaded the song, it totally
rocks. I think common rotation would do an awesome
cover of that one.

Re: what is the one good ballad?

My prom song "Never Say Goodbye" Bon Jovi! I sat down and reflected yesterday just to make sure that I wasn't talking out of my ass, which has been known to happen. But really that is the only good ballard written after 1982.
It has all the criteria
1) It says something
2) Slow (or at least moderately paced to not fast)
3) Is sung with a passion
4) Has a tune that won't get out of your head, plus that wicked awesome Richie Sambora riff
5) An enduring quality
Bonus is that JBJ sings it!
as obsessed with the movie as my mom and sister, wouldn't "In Your Eyes" count as a good ballad after 1982 by Peter Gabriel from "Say Anything?" --- besides, it's the whole John Cusack, puppy dog (or is that underdog?) string of movies that made people 9oh, ok, girls) love him like "Say Anything," "One Crazy Summer," and "Better Off Dead." -- "Fransh dressing, fransh bread, fransh fries" hehe, aaahh the language of love
I forgot to copy your criteria, so let me think ... it says something, right? passion? check. um, Peter Gabirel is no JBJ, but then I never had a thing for JBJ anyway. I like PG's voice beter that JBJ's. Call me crazy, shrug ... not fast at all ... and no guitar riff, but it has chimey noises! lol

I would pay good cash money for photographic evidence of that. I wouldn't pay good cash money for the story behind it, but I'd be awful pleased if you shared it anyway.

Immediate disimissile because of the association with Say Anything! (Think of High Fidelity - not my criteria, but JC himself)

Behind the Music
August 21 2002, 10:29 AM
or at least behind the story. I'm pretty sure it was the first time that the boys came home from California. They played at the Beanery (Broadway Beanery: coffee shop where the boys had a permenant Sunday gig, created a huge fan base, lots of coffee, tea, conga lines - in fact the patrons where so upset when the boys went to Cali that they torched the place with tears in their eyes, fists in the air, and hatred in their hearts - JUST KIDDING!!! The place has subsequently burned down but no one connected with Common Ro had anything to do with it--> DON'T SUE ME!)
ANYWAY, the boys came back for a return show to prove to all their loyal fans that the LA monster had not swallowed up their favorite folk band. Now by this time, I had sucked down so many cafe lattes over the past years at the Beanery that I had switched to a sultry '93 burgundy, so the next bit was definitely observed through a wine haze, correct me if I'm wrong. The middle of Payback used to have a curious little rant instead of the groovey musical medley that is now associated with the song. Adam goes into talking about how the move to Cali went and how great things are going. All the kids are cheering that our heros have triumphed in the nasty belly of the beast. Then Adam says that not everything has been peachy and coming up roses. Adam admits that the are ensnarled in a wicked battle with fellow California band -- NO DOUBT! Now Gwen has been running her mouth and basically the shit went down and now they are on the lam from No Doubt. All of a sudden, behind the band is a huge window and a door, this narlly van rolls up, out jumps this shady character that forces the boys into the van and they take off! We are all left sitting there wondering what the hell to do. I order another wine. Then the van pulls up again, and out jumps this "other" band who comes in and starts singing "I'm Just a Girl". The other band is the boys' version of No Doubt. Picture it: Adam in full Gwen get-up; pink wig, wrists bands, etc. Ken pratically naked in just boxers, Eric and Chris dressed accordingly. Then everyone ups and gets in the van again and finally the boys rush back in and finish Payback! It was a most turbulent night, to say the least. And I think that was the REAL payback
You know I snicker everytime I see the name Gwen somewhere?
Anyways that is beyond hilarious. I am crying I am laughing so hard. I think we need a repeat performance, what do you guys say?
LOL I need pics of this! Haha.
And Ronia-with ya on In Your Eyes

Know what just kills me? That show at the Beanery, where they ran out and came back like No Doubt...I was there that night, BUT LEFT BEFORE ALL THAT HAPPENED! I had to drive back out to Stony Brook that night, and it was a Sunday night so I had class early the next morning, so I couldn't stick around for the last set. I'm still kicking myself to this day, LOL.
My job better not ask me to work this Friday night, or heads will roll.
