Ok well normally I would have my little brother drive me into the scary city LOL but last week he started his cross country trek to his new home in San Francisco. I know nothing about trains or taking them. I live in Eastern Long Island and get lost past East Meadow (which is like an hour away from me as is)...actually I get lost there too but I went out there to meet some friends for some karaoke. Any ideas for someone who is scared to death to travel alone and knows she will die in an accident if she drives (Hey I just got married on the 17th I want to be around to torture him for years! LMAO)

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Take the LIRR

August 26 2002, 3:08 PM

I think it's the easiest way to get to the city, cause driving and parking out there is insane.

Go to: http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/lirr/

Look on the map to find the closest train station by you. Take the train all the way to Penn Station. Then find the exit and hail a cab. Tell them the address, and they'll get you there. (or take a subway, but I never can figure those out)

It's relatively safe. As safe as Long Island is anyway. Besides, as I'm slowly finding out: All the freaky people live on the island anyway! Or perhaps all the freaky people just live in East Meadow (I've only lived out here a few weeks, but my neighbors are seriously on crack or something).

LOL I beg to differ, the freaky people MOVE to the island (then again I dont live in Nassau county so I cant comment on people out there) Thanks for the link...hailing a cab should be fun...never done that before. Last time I took a cab was in junior high and I called the cab company for pick up (we are talking a good 12 years ago!) Heehee.

Now...whats this transfer in Jamaica business...I heard Adam joke about it, and from where I sit, what he said makes sense "Transfer in Jamaica for no good reason..."

This is what I get for growing up and living in Eastern Suffolk

Jamaica - Next

The dreaded transfer at Jamaica! It really isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be, but since you're new at the whole train thing (which I can't believe, BTW) AVOID TRANSFERRING AT JAMAICA!!
1) There are many trains there and it is easy to confuse them since the tracks are not clearly marked
2) Not the greatest part of Queens
3) Very rarely is the train waiting for you, so it will tack on extra time to the commute
(Once I was stuck at Jamaica for 45 minutes with the largest bag of laundry @ 11:30pm - very scary for an 18 year old)
If you do get stuck there, remember, no eye contact and stay as far away from the track as possible!
