Hold the phone! Who's a Monkees fan??

October 9 2002 at 4:23 PM
  (no login)

I was quickly scrolling through some of the posts and could have sworn that someone said they were a Monkees fan. I had to quickly close my browser (for some reason, my boss frowns on me jumping from fan site to fan site. Strange) so I don't remember who it was . . . . I happen to LOVE them myself. I thought I was the last of a dying breed.

Can you please let me know that I wasn't hallucinating when I read that?
Thanks
Vikki

Monkees

October 10 2002, 9:46 AM

I didn't think many people still listened to them. . .

Hey, hey, mercy woman plays a song and no one listens, I need help I'm falling again.

Play the drum a little louder,
Tell me I can live without her
If I only listen to the band.

Listen to the band!

I saw them in concert at DCA's Rockin the Bay a few months ago. Just Davy and Micky. But they were so good! g

Hi Vikki,

Yep, Briel was right. That was me! (Hi Briel!!) Sorry, I haven't been around for a few days (haven't had much access to my computer) and I just saw your post. You are definitely not alone out there! I've been a Monkees fan since I was five years old. (We won't mention how long that's actually been...) So, how many Monkees albums do you have? I have probably somwehere around 10 or 12, not counting the duplicates on vinyl & CD. I have a bunch of CDs with previously unreleased versions of some of their songs, like an alternate version of "I'm A Believer" and Mike singing lead on "The Girl That I Knew Somewhere." They're pretty cool, but only a Monkees fan would appreciate them.

Also, I have to say that YOU ROCK for posting the lyrics to "Listen to the Band"! I love that song.

Now weren't they good, they made me happy.
I think I can make it alone.

Oh, woman plays a song and no one listens,
I need help I'm falling again.

C'mon, play the drums just a little bit louder,
Tell us we can live without her
Now that we have listened to the band.

Although, Daydream Believer will always be my favorite.

chuckles Never saw the Monkees in concert - but love them all the same. Had the biggest crush on Micky when I was younger. Le Swoon.

And I'm amused that a talk about having Common Ro dress up as The Monkees and perform their songs could spawn this.

The Monkees rock...

Hey, Hey, I'm a Monkees Fan!

October 12 2002, 11:04 AM

I, too, belong to that much-maligned group of people who call themselves Monkees fans.

I saw them a bunch of times back in 97- 4 shows I think. I've met all of them except Michael, who is my favorite.

Have any of you heard Two Man Band? It's a CD Peter did with one of my favorite artists, James Lee Stanley- just two voices and 2 acoustic guitars. If you like Eric & Adam's acoustic sets (who doesn't?), you'll probably like it. And if it gets you listening to James, even better! He's a wonderful man and phenomenal performer.

Peter is also in a band called Shoe Suede Blues. The album's kinda crappy on the production end (I'm picky about stuff like that), but they put on a kickin' live show.

And Michael's son was in one of my favorite bands of all time, Nancy Boy, but alas, he broke up the band when the new label wanted to bring in studio musicians to boost their sound, and get "professional" songwriters to write their songs. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

Monkees!!!!!!!!!

Heehee, I was at the same concert TB was, except I went to the early show and she went to the later.

I think I could possibly be obsessed about them. I always watched them on Nickelodian as a kid, then I started buying tapes of the episodes through columbia house as soon as I got old enough for that kind of thing. I almost did my term paper for my Beatles class on their relationship with the Monkees (but that involved too much research for me at the time). I have a Monkees pillowcase hanging up in my room.

I blame my mother. She had their first album (and a few others but it was that first one that mattered most) on LP and I listened to it nonstop when I was around 7 or 8.

Alright, that gush made me feel like an even bigger dork than usual, so i need to leave now.

This is too funny. But yeah CeCe - we all certainly have no problem talking about nothing or something as the case sometimes is.

blink

Cricket - haven't heard of the bands mentioned. Will check them out when I'm awake.. which at 5:30 AM after not sleeping... doesn't qualify as now.

GypsyChick (who's name I still love) - A Monkees pillow? Oooh! Neat! I don't have any Monkees stuff.. never see any anywhere.. and we generally don't buy a lot online. We're old fashioned. And yes, we're talking in multiples. This is better than earlier when I was with Arky and spoke of myself as "she."

gypsychick.. that is so me... I got into the monkees through my mom's LPs and started watching the show on nick... tho I was about 10 or 11 at least at the time. No pillowcase, but I did have my mom's old (HUGE) poster of Davy hanging in my room, it took up half the wall! The first tape I bought ever was "pool it" which I am sure I still have around here somewhere.

Hold the phone! Who's a Monkees fan??

October 15 2002, 3:03 PM

Just back from my "try and forget that your yet ANOTHER year older" escapist weekend . . . .

Briel- I actually dont know how many of their albums I have. Most of them got split between my best friend and myself when she packed up and moved to Cali a few years ago and I think she lost some when she packed up moved to DC last year (can you say gypsy??). A few of the tapes I still have work. . . . sometimes I think I played them to death. Also, I have to say that my favorite song was always "Randy Scouse" and while I was a Davey fan when I was a wee little girl, all that changed when I grew up and realized that old "wool hat" was soooo much cooler (yeah that sounds grown up)

Hacker- I never saw them in concert either and though I can definatly see Adam as Mickey I can't figure who would match up to the rest of them. . . As for possessions, believe it or not, I just found my old Monkees jacket (official- of course ) up in my attic over the weekend. I always wanted one of the lunch boxes. . . maybe one day . . .

Cricket- Did Peters band preform on 7th Heaven at one time??? I think I saw him on it with a band . . .

Now a question for the serious Monkees Fans . . . . who owns a copy of Head (the movie)?? And who has actually watched the entire thing???

Head? Dear me.. I must not be a serious Monkees fan.. no clue what that is.

I mean, that is to say, a head sits ontop of ones shoulders... yes yes... but.. Head?

I want a Monkees lunchbox too! Or a jacket.. I'd soo wear a jacket. Actually, I think a jean jacket with just the words "Common Rotation" would be cool. But it hasta be jean. I wonder where my jean trench coat went....

Vikki,

I don't own a copy of Head, but I've seen it several times and I have the soundtrack.

"Give me a 'W'....give me an 'A'....give me an 'R'..."

I must say, it's a very weird little movie...

I love 'Randy Scouse Git' too. Such bizzare lyrics - "There are birds out on the sidewalk and a valet at the door. He reminds me of a penguin with few and plastered hairs. There's talcum powder on the letter and the birthday boy is there.... Did you know that they had to change the name of that song when it was released in England? I can't recall what they re-named it, though.

I will be very disappointed if I missed Peter on 7th Heaven. I would love to see Shoe Suede Blues perform someday.

Hold the phone! Who's a Monkees fan??

October 16 2002, 1:17 PM

Hacker- Head was the Monkees feature length movie. It was a comedy/tragedy/musical/surrealist/totally psychedelic movie and it BOMBED in the theatures- Big time One of the strangest movies you will ever watch. No story line whatsoever. They were pretty . . . . ummm. . . . "happy" while they wrote and filmed it. Actually, (strange fact) Jack Nicolson was one of the writers.

Shelly- I love the chorus to Randy Scouse (I never was able to find out what the original name was either)

Why don't you cut your hair?
Why don't you live up there?
Why don't you do what I do,
See what I feel when I care?
Why don't you be like me?
Why don't you stop and see?
Why don't you hate who I hate,
Kill who I kill to be free.

Unfortunately I never actually watched 7th Heaven (only glimpses of it while I was waiting for Angel to come on) so I don't have Peter on it on tape. . .

Tamz- HI! I forgot that I'm meeting up with people in the city on Sat. Were you planning on coming to the park with us?? I promise I'll hold your hand on the train and everything

Hey Vikki,

I found the answer to the "Randy Scouse Git" question:
In England, this song would be released as a single under the title "Alternate Title."
I guess that's all it was called, "Alternate Title"

Re: Hold the phone! Who's a Monkees fan??

October 16 2002, 9:27 PM

Okay, so I own a copy of Head. Sad. And what's worse is that I bought it when I was like 13 and had no clue what the heck was happening in the movie. They wanted it to be pretty trippy and it was... I just didn't know what a "trip" was!

Heck I even own a copy of the VH1 movie "Daydream Believers" the true Monkees story, anyone seen that???!? Aaron Lohr (from Newsies) plays Micky who I never found sexy til then. Then I was like "....ohhh i see it now, micky is kinda cute."

Randy Scouse Git is one of my favorite songs (i still love Daydream Believer). It's all the British slang terms that Micky didn't understand. So they turned it into a song. Although I can't figure out how that title really relates to the lyrics!!

Hacker: I got the pillowcase at the concert I just went to. Got myself a t-shirt too, which you may be seeing me wear at a common ro show now with all this talk!

I have to say that I always loved Micky, and didn't he always have the coolest songs?? Goin' Down, Pleasant Valley Sunday and soooo many more. And lets not forget the oh so controversial "Gonna buy me a dog" heehee

Re: Hold the phone! Who's a Monkees fan??

October 17 2002, 1:50 PM

Vikki - From waht I understand, they titled it Randy Scouse Git as a jab at the Beatles and it's not a nice thing to call someone which is why they had to change the name for the release in England.

gypsychick - I saw "Daydream Believers", too, but I haven't seen it for sale anywhere. Where did you find it?

I think the coolest song I've ever heard Micky sing was at the Monkees concert last year. He sang "Since I Fell For You" and it was just awesome. For all his screwing around, he really has a fantastic voice. It was also rather funny to hear him sing "Purple Haze".

But Have you seen...?

October 17 2002, 10:27 PM

33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee?

This was the Monkees' big variety special, which killed them. Immediately after, Peter left the band. It is truly, truly awful stuff. Though it's worth seeing just for the huge "Listen to the Band" jam at the end- including a guy holding up a sign that says something like "they're really playing this."

I was quoted in a USA Today article about the Monkees back in '96, when they released Justus- came out right after they were on the Today Show (yes, I was there- group of about 20 of us saw them at Hammerstein the night before, then stood out on the street all damn night!). Anyway, the article was about the instrument controversy, and they closed with my comment, "The real question is, if they weren't playing their own instruments, whose instruments were they playing?" Yes, that little gem was published.

Oh, and Randy Scouse Git means, literally "Horny Liverpudlian Idiot."
