New York Gig

Hi~
Question for the board:
Is anyone a NY/LI native, or going to the NY gig?

I ask, because I'm going to NY for my spring break with a friend, so we can visit relatives out on LI. We really, really want to go to the concert on the 12th, and at first, we thought we'd be able to. The girl I'm going with has a cousin (the same age as us) who would have "chaperoned" us on the train to New York and around the village before/after the concert. However, we found out tonight that she has to work.

This bums us out, because evidently, although we can drive to West Hollywood by ourselves for a CR concert, we aren't trusted by our relatives enough to go into the city without some "native supervision". Also, we don't want to take a wrong turn and get lost in the city after dark, if we managed to go.

The point of this long, boring post?
We would be eternally grateful if anybody going to the NY gig would be willing to meet up with us. It would probably be just for going to the village and back, but would nonetheless be a huge help. Is that plausible for anyone?

where are you coming from

March 19 2003, 2:51 PM

where in li are you coming from? it makes a big difference as to who can help or not. not that it's that big of a deal, but if you're coming from bumbleshmuck, then it will be a little more difficult. i'll probably be taking the train in, but may be leaving earlier than you want. you can always romp around manhattan before the gig though. let me know where you're staying.

naggz: Hey! Whats wrong with out here in bumbleschmuck? I like not getting run down by city drivers and robbed by pick pockets ;P hee

(no login)

well

March 19 2003, 5:13 PM

only people from bumbleschmuch get run down or pickpocketed. anyways i'm from the island, not the city. kickin' it east ghetto style. so yeah, after that, it really depends where from li peeps are coming from.

here's the basic breakdown of the long island rail road system. there are three main branches: the babylon branch, the port jefferson branch, and the ronkonkama branch. the remaining lines tend to spread out from these lines, like tributaries of a river (eg: ohio river=tributary of mississippi river, etc). the babylon branch runs down across the south shore of long island west through queens into manhattan. the ronkonkama line runs through the middle of the island through hicksville where it meets up with the port jefferson line. the port jefferson line runs along the north shore of long island until hicksville where it meets up with the ronkonkama line. at hicksville both lines go west thorugh queens toward manhattan. all the lines converge at one spot, Jamaica. from there the routes branch out again to local stops in queens and brooklyn, and of course go to manhattan's pennsylvania station.

as far as the lirr goes, it's pretty simple. the gig is on a saturday, so you must follow the saturday, sunday, and holiday schedule for your line. you can check out all the infor for the lirr at: http://www.mta.info/lirr/index.html

At the site you can find train schedules, station locators, maps, fare prices, whatever. FYI, buy your ticket from the booth at the station if you can. if the booth is open at your station and you choose not to buy it then (and decide to buy it on the train) then you will have to pay a fee for buying it on the train. i think it's $2, but still it's $2 that can be used to buying The Big Fear. Also, buy your ticket round trip. it doesn't save you any money, but it does ensure that you can get home at the end of the night. that is usually very important. unless of course you're a pimp and go home with someone else. but that's a whole different box of tricks.

as far as myself is concerned, i'll be going in with my beautiful babydoll ms. jamie costanzo. but i think we may make a whole day out of it and romp around manhattan for a while beforehand. maybe hit up a museum or something. hence not allowing me the ability to fully provide naggz's tour guide services to the likes of others. i'll be preoccupied with jamie. can you blame me? i haven't seen her in a month and probably won't get to see her till the gig. whatever the case, check out the website to help yourself out. it's got stuff for the lirr and if you click on the icon on the top for NYC Transit, you can get to stuff for the subway as well. be advised, train fees as well as subway fees are going to be raised, so the fare you see today may not be there tomorrow.

peace and love,
naggz

naggz: Im way out in bumbleschmuck...try like 5 minutes from Westhampton yet still over an hour from "The End" . Besides all the city folk seem to work there way out here every summer crowding up our streets making it impossible for us to go grocery shopping or get to work on time so Im "sorta" used to it Heehee

sara: I dunno. It all depends on how Im feeling...This pregnancy is kicking the shit out of me Anywho, I will see what I can do. I'm not too certain I want to spend over an hour each way on the train, walk the city and then have to stand because of the 2 drink limit rule at the Bitter End..Obviously I can not drink and I will not risk getting my belly jabbed by a bunch of people dancing who also could not sit down for one reason or another. (Besides going to the city is much more fun when you can get drunk and I most certainly can not do that this time LOL)

March 20 2003, 7:16 PM

I think my message title says it all...
Thank you to everyone who responded. I never expected that many people to offer to help, and it has really helped boost my lagging faith in humanity.

My friend and I will probably be in Levittown, where her relatives are, but we might be in Hicksville, Mineola, or North Bellmore, where my relatives are. However, since all their houses are with 10 minutes of each other, I don't think it'll be a problem in regard to time differences to get to a train station from wherever we are.

I wish I could write more, but I have to be at drama in 15 minutes. If I get home from rehearsal before 11:00, then I will check out the website (thank you, naggz!), and figure out the closest station, so we're not a burden on anyone who agrees to meet up with us.
Thank you all again,

If you're going to be in any of those towns, especially Hicksville, then definitely go from the Hicksville station. That's one of those main junctions that a lot of trains pass through, so you'll have no trouble finding a train to and from there. No worries, girl!

Some native help

March 22 2003, 3:49 AM

Hey there Suzettethebloody (gotta love a name like that) This too is my first time posting and it will be my first show also. I am an avid fan of live music (Usually harder music then CoRo) and my sister is a common ro freak. She has done nothing but tell me how I have to go and see them when they come to NY. So far I have missed two shows. The first I had all intentions of going but my best friend who I was supposed to go with stood me up, i.e. he forgot to call me when he got out of work and wake me up so I could pick him up on the way. L And the second? Well I was in Canada so the drive would have been too long for one show, sorry L

That is neither here nor there to your question. I would advise against having anyone you don't know being your chaprone, not that I am saying anyone here has any ill intentions but in these times you never know. I am sure your family would rather you go alone then with a stranger. My advice is if you do not know the city then driving in is not a good option, no sense figuring out what brige to take and driving in an agressive city. I was also made aware recently that NY trafic and driving style is far different then outside of NY, as I have shown three friends around within the last year and all they did as I drove was star and wonder. I guess outside NYC the taxi's don't have huge bumper guards and are in the habit of hitting eachother when they want the one in front to move fast. Yes, this does happen, it is quite common, I am just used to things like this. Also, though I am sure this is not a problem in the eve but day trafic is a nightmare as new trafic paterns have been put in effect and some streets are closed to crosstown trafic durring certain hours, yada yada yada. If you can, take the train. LIRR is one of the best ways in and the most comfortable. Like someone else said, Hicksville is a great station to leave from, but you have to know where to park. Mineola is also a great station and gets tons of evening trains, and there is free parking right there. The security of the Mineola Train station and the Hicksville Station (as I type this and my Sister is on the phone with me she keeps going on and on about the name of one of LI's historical town names. Yes it is REALLY named Hicksvills, Named for Mr. Hicks who planned the LIRR. And If you all think that is funny, try saying the town name Ronkonkama, (I know I spellled it wrong) and how about the town my last apartment was in, Dix Hills? Funny? Appparently according to my sister, not as funny as Hicksville, Where was I again? Oh right Security) are about the same in the evening, though Mineola has a worse rep you are no safer in Hicksville, they are both OK. They have survaliance cameras at both, regular taxis and the cops drive by from time to time. I also suggest to bring a little cash and just navoid the subways on your first visit. If you do not have a guide well it can be confusing, or so I am told. I was born here, I am used to it. So take a taxi to the show. You will be fine.

I should be there (listens to her sister over the phone laughing and chastizing her about how She should be at all of them.) snort I had valid excuses damnit! *looks around and relizes she looks like a mad woman talking to herself.* well you are only 33.3 percent right. Anywho, I will most likely be the chick that looks a bit out of place, I always am. Expect dark clothes with spikes and chains, but really I am nice, trust me.

Oye. I'm am laughing so incredibly hard at Nuchy's post. Hicksville And I'm not being a brat.

Good advice, I know I'd be incredibly lost in NY on my own. And with my luck it wouldn't be as cool a time as "Kevin" on Home Alone: Lost in NY had.

Gee, I wonder if the actor's even still alive. I guess the only thing to do is assume he's dead as you should any actor who's out of the spot light. It's better this way and you don't start wondering when Angela Lansbury's going to have her big comeback. Murder She Wrote: The case of the hip replacement.

Sara, as others have said, take the LIRR, from Hicksville (my dad grew up there, as did Billy Joel, btw). And if you're not used to the NYC subways, take a cab- it's pretty easy to get turned around in the Village, even if you know where you're going, and you don't want to be wandering the streets searching in vain for the club.

Sara -

I don't think Nuchy was trying to put down any one person's support. She's just trying to remind Suzette to be careful. While I think everyone I've chatted w/ on this board particularily is cool, it's always good to be a bit wary of those you don't know in person. There are a lot of creeps out there and on here (the net). It's good to look out for others.

Re: New York Gig

March 24 2003, 3:22 AM

Like HG said I was not trying to put anyone down I ust know far too many people who have been hurt from creeps on the net and after all we all have seen that lil 13 year old who was missing for 2 months because of her 30 year old internet BF. Now that is not here nor there. Granted I am not saying anyone should never meet up with friends they have on the internet because I certainly have and think that some of the closest people I know are originaly met from online. But there is a difference between strangers and someone you really know. Sorry if I over stepped my bounds, I know I am new to this forum but I worry about people, even people I don't know. I am always telling people to be careful and to not meet up with someone unless they are sure it is safe.

I hope my warnings have not discouraged Suzzettethebloody and I hope she gets there, I just like to play the better to be safe then sorry card.

Ok, I read this topic because the title is "New York Gig" and well, hey, I'm gonna be there....but now I'm really wishing I hadn't.

I'm coming over from the UK with a friend. It'll be the first time to NY for both of us, and after looking through a guidebook was already feeling like we'll never find our way around. Now I've read through this topic and I'm more worried than ever. Everything seems so complicated.

Don't get me wrong, I've done my fair share of travelling, I've just never felt this intimidated by a PLACE before! I just want to curl up and miss my plane!

Ok, stress-out over!

See you all Saturday (if I ever find the place!)

Oh but Califoria is way cooler!

New York can totally be a scary place if you're unfamiliar.

Just remember - that's what cabs are for! It might cost more than you'd wanted to pay (i.e. instead of going by subway), but hey, safety first. Just tell the driver you want to go to Bleecker between Thompson and LaGuardia. Once you're on that block, you should see it. If not, just ask someone where it is!

I'm sending out loving vibes to all of those coming from out of town. Don't be scared! =)

CommonRo4me-sounds like some good advise. Well, hope every one found the gig ok.

actually,

April 7 2003, 9:40 AM

the real trick is to never make eye contact. don't look at anyone and they won't mess with you. if you look all angry and such some people might bitch you out, and then all hell breaks loose, and I have to pull eric's guitar out of his ass cause the big bad man didn't like eric's folky look, and then adam comes over to help me out (cause the guitar is really shoved in there), so ken comes over to also lend a hand (or foot, as the case was) by attaching his footpedal to eric's head and smacking him so hard that the guitar dislodges itself from the minstrel. then mike comes over is like, hey guys, what the hell are you doing to eric?. so remember kids, don't make eye contact

peace and love,

Naggz-well,I was gonna ask how did it get there the guitar that is but I get it now the guy who didn't like folk or the look of Eric. Well, sounds very painful guitar ass not good at all.Infact nothing is good with ass at all.(all bad)

So I think the moral of the story is don't stare at any one in NY? or you could get "what the fuck are you looking at" which is never good cuz then ya got a answer.( and it ain't going to be pretty)

CommonRo4me-still think talking to your self is a good one.

If worse comes to worse, grab a cab. I know it can be expensive for some, but it's safe and reliable.

Also, another good idea would be for some of us who are familiar with the city should maybe give out their cell numbers for those who feel a little overwhelmed. If anyone needs help, just call.

Once you have a good map, the city is nothing but a big grid. It's a lot simplier than people make it out to be.

Another good piece of advice...always look like you know what you're doing and like you have a purpose and try to hook up with people.

Trust me...you guys will be fine. Just breathe and don't forget your brain. LOL Remember cabs usually know where you want to go and The Bitter End is a pretty popular place.

Naggz, you were supposed to be re-assuring me, not freaking me out!

You do realise that I'm now gonna be too scared to look at anyone for the next week!!!

You know, I'm thinking I maybe didn't buy the best guide book. I thought that I'd be ok getting cabs, but my guide book says stuff like...

"You will need to have a good idea of where you are going and how to get there as most of the cab drivers in NY are the latest immigrants to have arrived and have very little clue about how to get around the city."

"Most speak very little English and are not interested in making polite conversation, and many can be downright rude."

Theres also a whole paragraph on the "lighting system on top of the yellow medallion taxis" !!!

Please tell me it's not as bad as I'm imagining it to be?

Re: New York Gig

April 7 2003, 6:05 PM

OK, taxis are not nearly that bad. I have yet to find one that has no clue. As long as you have the address and one cross street, they'll know where to go. It's their job to know, but then again there's always the exceptional idiot. I just haven't found him yet. LOL

As far as the lighting system on the cabs:
If the light is off, they have passengers.

If only the numbers are lit, they are available.

If the numbers AND "off Duty" is lit, they are available as long as you are going in the same direction they are.

If just the "off duty" is lit, then they are unavailable.

It's all basic common sense really. Most of them will stay quiet, but some are very friendly. Basically they are there to take you where you want to go for a price. They are not there to make idle chit chat and considering the typical NYer, it's not surprising. And yes most of the drivers are foriegn.

chill babe,

April 8 2003, 12:51 PM

Kat it is definitely not as bad as it may seem. Actually, it's not bad at all. Thankfully i've never had to pull eric's guitar out of his ass (his foot from his mouth, now that's a different story) and hopefully will never have to. Don't worry. Everything will be fine. And once you walk into the Bitter End and sit down to a night Long Island Iced Tea, you'll wonder to yourself,"self, what the hell was I freakin' out about?" so yeah, don't worry. be happy.

peace and love,
naggz

Ahh, Kat!

April 8 2003, 1:41 PM

But those are the adventures! People want to prepare you so you're not wandering around oblivious, but the way it's presented is always overstated. ("Better safe than sorry.") Really, you'll get there, it'll be all kosher (or maybe not exactly), as Naggz said, you'll wonder what you were worrying about.

If there are any remotely hairy moments you encounter, hey, who doesn't have those on a trip? They may just end up becoming the best parts of your trip, the parts that make it a real adventure. (Ahhh, the good old days! *thinking back to staying in skeezy youth hostel in an even skeezier area of BC, yelling at the multiple attempted invaders to get the fuck away from my door, which had no lock and was kept closed by stacking worn furniture wall to wall* That was the culmination of one bizarre evening, and in a Threesome-like manner, this potentially intimidating experience became, when recollected, the part of my trip most likely to make my laugh. Remember: Use those words, if necessary, and it'll all be okay!

You're gonna have a great time!

Naggz & Deb~ You rock! You sure know how to make us feel better. Acutally I wasn't that freaked out. I'm pretty good at finding my way around. LA has gotten pretty easy now. Except I think the cops have it out for me! I've gotten pulled over twice (That one time in August after the Citywalk show when I had like 6 people in my car and once in February) and gotten like 3 tickets for random shit. I never have these problems at home. Anyways what was I saying? Oh yeah I think I'll be able to find my way around. And at least I won't be alone. Amy will be with me. No one should mess with us. I mean watching Buffy for seven years has got to have implanted some knowledge of how to protect myself right? LOL I'm nervous about getting to the Airport alone on Tuesday night but other than that I think it will all be cool.

Thanks guys.

I guess I'm more worried than normal coz the person I'm travelling with hasn't been abroad much so I think he'll probably look to me to take the lead with stuff.

Anyway, I leave for the airport in 3 hours and I'm not packed yet so I'd better get moving.

Thanks again for all your help and reassurance....and on Saturday, if you see a fat blonde woman looking like she knows no-one, stood with a man who looks as though he doesn't know what he's doing there.....please come say "hi"...I might even buy you a drink!!!
