I first heard this song on the most brilliant show ever, "Scrubs," in what is far and away my favorite episode. Amidst talk of 'bitches and hos,' there is touching (read: I'm a wuss and I'm crying) dialogue between JD and a woman waiting for a transplant. She envisions death as singing in the footlights of a broadway show. At the end of the day, when she flatlines on her bed, JD sees her in the spotlight, in a striking red dress singing this song:
Waiting For My Real Life to Begin
Colin Hays
Waiting for my real life to begin
Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I'll keep checking the horizon
I'll stand on the bow, feel the waves come crashing
Come crashing down down down, on me
And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart
Let the light shine in
But don't you understand
I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
When I awoke today, suddenly nothing happened
But in my dreams, I slew the dragon
And down this beaten path, and up this cobbled lane
I'm walking in my old footsteps, once again
And you say, just be here now
Forget about the past, your mask is wearing thin
Let me throw one more dice
I know that I can win
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I’ll keep checking the horizon
And I'll check my machine, there's sure to be that call
It's gonna happen soon, soon, soon
It's just that times are lean
And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart, let the light shine in
Don't you understand
I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
And on a clear day, I can see
See a very long way
-----
So my question is this:
What song really moves you? What song takes you so far away you forget your name, forget that you're at work, forget you don't have the money for rent? What makes you believe, maybe not in any one specific thing but that there's good in the world to believe in, that there has to be?
The Backstreet boys "What Makes You Different" I know that song may sound cheesy because it is the BSB but i think its VERY true when you listen to the words. Michelle Branch "even angels fall" is also very real when you think about it, ok i better shut up now but i would really recommend they songs to anyone but mostpeople might thing it will give them a severe headake , guess its up to the individual to choose lol.I tend to ramble as you can see !

The song "Particle" by Better Than Ezra. The lyrics are actually kinda pessimistic, but there was a time when I was listening to it and going "yes, that's what I think too!" and whenever I hear those first few beats I'm immediately sucked in and everything else zones out.
You may not see the end of it
But luckily she comes around
It isn't what she talks about
It's just the way she is
And she says:
"Ooh, darlin', don't you know?
The darkness comes and the darkness goes."
She says:
"Ooh, babe, why don't you let it go?
Happiness ain't never how you think it should be so."
I mystified the simple life
I covered up with consciousness
I saw myself and broke it down
'Til nothing more was left
She saw the symptoms right away
And spoke to me in poetry
"Sometimes the more you wonder why,
The worse it seems to get"
And she says:
"Ooh, darlin', don't you know?
The darkness comes and the darkness goes."
She says:
"Ooh, babe, why don't you let it go?
Happiness ain't never how you think it should be so."
She runs away
She runs away
And then you know there comes a time
You need her more than anything
You may believe yours are the wounds
That only she can heal
Then everything will turn around
She becomes so serious
What she chose to offer you
Was all that you could have
And she says:
"Ooh, darlin', don't you know?
The darkness comes and the darkness goes."
She says:
"Ooh, babe, why don't you let it go?
Happiness ain't never how you think it should be so."
She runs away
She runs away
She runs away
She runs away
YOUR PAIN MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL, YOU LOVE TO LOSE CONTROL,
AND MEDIOCRITY'S REWARDED SO SET YOUR STANDARDS LOW.
IN AN IMPLODING STAR, OR A BURNED OUT CAR, I IMPLORE YOU.
IN A CARBON-ARC OR A DIM LIT PARK, I IMPLORE YOU.
SUCK ME IN, I'M WILLING, I GET OFF WHEN YOU GO ON
LET ME BE YOUR FATE. POUR IT ON, POUR IT ON.
IN A COUNTRY FAIR OR UNION SQUARE, I IMPLORE YOU
IN A SHROUDED FACE OR A SPRAY OF MACE, I IMPLORE YOU.
I IMPLORE YOU.
CRYPTIC? ELEMENTAL.
YOU TRANSCEND WHEN YOU SUCCUMB.
ONE LAST SHRED OF FRAILTY LEFT,
EMBEDDED IN OUR BONES.
IN AN IMPLODING STAR, OR A BURNED OUT CAR, I IMPLORE YOU
IN A CARBON-ARC OR A DIM LIT PARK, I IMPLORE YOU
SO DO IT AGAIN, DO IT AGAIN, DO IT AGAIN. THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS
PARTICLE.
SO DO IT AGAIN, DO IT AGAIN, DO IT AGAIN. THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS
PARTICLE
Whenever I run
Whenever I run to you lost one
It's never done
Just hanging on
Just past has let me be
Returning as if dream
Shattered as belief
If you have to go don't say goodbye
If you have to go don't you cry
If you have to go I will get by
Someday I'll follow you and see you on the other side
But for the grace of love
I'd will the meaning of
Heaven from above
Your picture out of time
Left aching in my mind
Shadows kept alive
If you have to go don't say goodbye
If you have to go don't you cry
If you have to go I will get by
I will follow you and see you on the other side
But for the grace of love
I'd will the meaning of
Heaven from above
Long horses we are born
Creatures more than torn
Mourning our way home
Jessica Riddle---Even Angels Fall
(is this right?)
You've found hope
You've found faith,
Found how fast she could take it away.
Found true love,
Lost your heart.
Now you don't know who you are.
She made it easy,
Made it free,
Made you hurt til you couldn't see.
Sometimes it stops,
Sometimes it flows,
But baby that is how love goes.
You will fly and you will crawl;
God knows even angels fall.
No such thing as you lost it all.
God knows even angels fall.
It's a secret no one tells;
One day it's heaven, one day it's hell.
It's no fairy tale;
Take it from me,
That's the way it's supposed to be.
You will fly and you will crawl;
God knows even angels fall.
No such thing as you lost it all.
God knows even angels fall.
You laugh, you cry, no one knows why
Behold the thrill of it all...
You're on the ride
You might as well
Open your eyes
You will fly and you will crawl;
God knows even angels fall.
No such thing as you lost it all.
God knows even angels fall.
Even angels fall
Even angels fall
BACKSTREET BOYS
"What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful)"
You don't run with the crowd
You go your own way
You don't play after dark
You light up my day
Got your own kind of style
That sets you apart
Baby, that's why you captured my heart
I know sometimes you feel like you don't fit in
And this world doesn't know what you have within
When I look at you, I see something rare
A rose that can grow anywhere (grow anywhere)
And there's no one I know that can compare
What makes you different, (alright) makes you beautiful (alright)
What's there inside you, (alright) shines through to me
In your eyes I see, all the love I'll ever need
You're all I need, oh girl
What makes you different, makes you beautiful to me
Hey, yeah yeah yeah
You got something so real
You touched me so deep (touched me so deep)
See material things
Don't matter to me
So come as you are
You've got nothing to prove
You won me with all that you do
And I wanna take this chance to say to you
What makes you different, (alright, yeah yeah) makes you beautiful (alright)
What's there inside you, (alright) shines through to me
In your eyes I see, all the love I'll ever need
You're all I need, oh girl
What makes you different, makes you beautiful
You don't know (you don't know) how you touched my life (touched my life)
Oh in so many ways (so many ways) I just can't describe
You taught me what love is supposed to be
You saw the little things that make you beautiful to me (so beautiful)
Oh yeah, yeah
What makes you,
What makes you different, (what makes) makes you beautiful (to me)
What's there inside you, (there shines) shines through to me
In your eyes I see, all the love I'll ever need
You're all I need, oh girl
What makes you different, makes you beautiful to me
Everything you do is beautiful (so beautiful)
Love you give shines right through me (shines right through to me)
Everything you do is beautiful (ooh, ooh ooh ooh oh)
Oh, you're beautiful to me (to me)

I'm also in Duncan Sheik's camp, except "In The Absence Of Sun" is my religion. Seriously. I used to work in an office where, in our spare time, we built a digital jukebox database and ripped all our CDs into MP3 for it (yeah, I am a geek, but at least I'm a music geek, right?)... for awhile there we didn't have much on it, and I can tell ya my coworkers got real sick of Duncan Sheik. :D
Oh, and also, um, "Smack My Bitch Up" by Prodigy because it... uh... speaks to me. Except, not really.
Kinny: Oh too cool, another Prodigy fan. I was just thinking yesterday that I wondered what they were up to. I haven't heard a whisper about them since 1998-99 when they released Fat of the Land. I actually had a Prodigy web site there for a while ...
I got hooked on them when I was in Germany in 1994 and saw the video for "No Good" off of Music for the Jilted Generation. I may be a freak, but I would say "No Good" by Prodigy is one of those songs that gets to me, "Breaking the Girl" by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and "Satellite" by Dave Matthews if I have to limit myself. I have a song for just about any mood though really. I gladly join the ranks of the music nerds with Kinny. :p
Deborah: I've seen that episode! That was the first time I watched 'Scrubs'... and I couldn't help but notice how zany that show was. I can't really remember the song.
Three songs that move me to bits o' pieces: 'Walking After You' and 'Everlong' by Foo Fighters; 'Echo' by Incubus. I can't really explain it. But they're all slow songs--hyperness and hard rock isn't really my character. :P

Two picks...
March 31 2003, 9:31 PM
Jane Siberry's "Calling All Angels" (I saw it used in a Roswell episode and the movie Pay It Forward. The two moments were very touching)
A man is placed upon the steps, a baby cries
And high above him you hear the church bells start to ring.
The heaviness, the heaviness of it settles in,
A mother starts to sing.
Then it's one foot then the other as you step along the road
Steppin' on the road, how much weight, how much weight?
And it's how long and how far and how many times,
Oh, before it's too late?
Calling all angels, Calling all angels.
Walk me through this one, don't leave me alone.
Calling all angels, Calling all angels.
We're trying, we're hoping, but we're not sure how...
Oh and every day you gaze upon the sunset
With such love and intensity.
Why it's almost as if, if you could only crack the code
You'd finally understand what this all means.
Oh but if you could, do you think you would
Have traded all the pain and suffering?
Oh, but then you would've missed the beauty of the light upon this earth
And the sweetness of the leaving.
Calling all angels, Calling all angels!
Walk me through this one, don't leave me alone
Calling all angels, calling all angels,
We're trying, we're hoping but we're not sure...
Calling all angels (call all angels)
Calling all angels (call all angels)
Walk me through this one
Don't leave me alone.
Calling all angels, Calling all angels
We're trying, we're hoping, we're hurting, we're loving
We're crying, we're calling,
But we're not sure how this goes.

JIMMY EAT WORLD
"The Middle"
Hey, don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head you feel left out or
looked down on.
Just try your best,
try everything you can.
And don't you worry what
they tell themselves when you're away.
It just takes some time,
little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything (everything) will be just fine,
everything (everything) will be alright (alright).
Hey, you know they're all the same.
You know you're doing better on your own,
so don't buy in.
Live right now.
Yeah, just be yourself.
It doesn't matter if
it's good enough for someone else.
It just takes some time,
little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything (everything) will be just fine,
everything (everything) will be alright (alright).
It just takes some time,
little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything (everything) will be just fine,
everything (everything) will be alright (alright).
Hey, don't write yourself off yet.
It's only in your head you feel left out or
looked down on.
Just do your best,
do everything you can.
And don't you worry what the bitter hearts
are gonna say.
It just takes some time,
little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything (everything) will be just fine,
everything (everything) will be alright (alright).
It just takes some time,
little girl you're in the middle of the ride.

Anonymous: Yes, EVEN ANGELS FALL is written and performed by Jessica Riddle - http://www.jessriddle.com She married and changed her last name to Jacobs. She is still performing and is working on her second album at this time.
"I hope you never lose your sense of wonder,
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
GOD forbid love ever leave you empty handed,
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance.
I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance,
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin' might mean takin' chances but they're worth takin',
Lovin' might be a mistake but it's worth makin',
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter,
When you come close to sellin' out reconsider,
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance.
(Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along,
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone.)
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.
Dance....I hope you dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance..
(Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone)"
Diamond Rio's "I Believe"
"Every now and then soft as breath upon my skin
I feel you come back again
And it's like you haven't been gone a moment from my side
Like the tears were never cried
Like the hands of time are holding you and me
And with all my heart I'm sure we're closer than we ever were
I don't have to hear or see, I've got all the proof I need
There are more than angels watching over me
I believe, I believe
Chorus
That when you die your life goes on
It doesn't end here when you're gone
Every soul is filled with light
It never ends and if I'm right
Our love can even reach across eternity
I believe, I believe
Forever, you're a part of me
Forever, in the heart of me
And I'll hold you even longer if I can
The people who don't see the most
Say that I believe in ghosts
And if that makes me crazy, then I am
'Cause I believe
There are more than angels watching over me
I believe, I believe"
Sometimes it's just amazing how mere words can unleash such emotion.
No Reply, by Yoko Kanno and Steve Conte. More than mildly depressing, but still a wonderful song...
"If only I could call the rain to melt and wash away the pain you feel,
I would
You gave yourself to me and showed me what the truth could be
For that, I say thank you
This was my life
It never made much sense to me"
Um..."Come What May", from Moulin Rouge...^^; not to mention the Elephant Medly, also from Moulin Rouge...y'know, "Love lifts us up where we belong! Where eagles fly, unimagined highs!"
Whoo. Perhaps the more dorky side, "Here I Am," by Bryan Adams and from the movie Spirit.
And to shamelessly flaunt my addicted to J-pop, Megumi Hayashibara's "Give a Reason," which is completely in Japanese, but the translation just seems to sum up everything I think: "I'm not afraid of getting hurt, but I'm not strong at all,
It's just that I can't stand not doing anything anymore,
I don't want any regrets!
Here we go! go! Keep on running! No one can stop us
I want to get through to to my future self, and give her a reason for life."

CommonRobaby-some nice choices! I have quite a few but "I need sleep" so am gonna get to this at another time.
As for all the songs you guys have mentioned, I've listened to everything I could find online so far, and it was actually Sara's song (Better Than Ezra) that made an instant fan of me.
Other thoughts: poetrychick - I love the instrumental at the beginning of that song, which I'd never heard before. When I first heard it, I forgot what I was listening to; when Billy Corgan started singing, I was thrown off-track for a minute. (If you don't mind someone poking fun, Stephen Lynch imitates his style most amusingly in a song about finding car keys.) Very pretty song...
Common Girl & Kinny:
Perhaps I should give that a try? I didn't download that song, I think... I've heard Duncan Sheik before (many of my friends love him) and haven't been too enamored of him, but perhaps it's because I haven't heard this song. Which I will soon remedy.
Claire:
I think it was the first I watched after working on the show a few weeks ago. (I'd seen it once before then.) I was immediately taken by how they could start the show with such a funny little exchange ("You might as well call it chamLAME") and end on such a heavy but sweet note. I think this will be an excellent source of new music for me, since having listened to little clips of other artists who have sung I'm really in love with all of them. Guided By Voices is great, but all I can hear online is really grainy. Which means... Rhino Records, here I come! Also, Jeremy Kay is calling for me to buy his album (also off the Scrubs soundtrack). Wow. I'm writing a lot here!
Vixen:
The only other Jane Siberry song I've heard is "It Won't Rain All the Time" off the Crow soundtrack. This was similarly haunting. Also, thank you for the Jimmy Eats World lyrics - I've wondered about them, that song in particular, and I looooove it! What an uplifting song.
Common Ro Baby:
I just listened to these and they're both beautiful. I've heard the first one before, but the second is more touching to me... not lyrically, necessarily, but the emotions it evokes.
Sleepy Ferret:
I tried to find the first song, but was unable. I did listen to the Hayashibara song, and it took me back to Korea. laugh Except that it wasn't as melodramatic, so without your translation I wouldn't know what it was about... unlike the Korean songs I heard! I didn't speak the language, but those songs... man, they may as well have been in English, the meanings were so clear.

Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance" is such a beautiful song. It's really special to me because it was playing in the deliver room when one of my friends gave birth to her son. The child was really sick and only lived a few hours. Afterwards my friend had those lyrics printed up and put in a frame above her fireplace as a memorial. I see it everytime I go over her house.

Context

Vixen:
The songs themselves are beautiful, but part of their power is in what we associate them with, hey? Certain songs take me back in an instant, even when I know I'd laugh if I heard them for the first time now, because of the memories and emotions they carry with them. Some such silly songs: "Stay" (Shakespeare Sisters), "I'd Die Without You," (PM Dawn), "I'll Be There" (Escape Club), "One More Try" (Timmy T). They're so different from what I listen to now, but hold such power over me, all because they define those moments in my life. Thank you for sharing that connection with us - what a powerful implication that has, how it makes the song more personal...
She Runs Away struck a chord with me the very first time I heard it, and it has never let go of me since. As with The Middle by Jimmy Eat World, it reminds me that it is all right to feel a little broken, a little underappreciated, because someday, something will happen that will make it all make sense, that good things come to those who wait.
Deborah, it is indeed a pretty song, ok this band is a little odd Sigur Ros. Has anybody heard of them there
Instrumentals are very good the catch is they made up there own Language and they sing in it.
Inspired to listen to my Diamond Rio CD that has "I Believe" on it, I found two more. Deb- the first one has a line in it that reminded me of you right off the bat.
Diamond Rio- "Big Ol' Fire"
"One of these days you'll turn around
And wanna get out of this someday town
Well people gonna laugh you know what they'll say
You're never gonna get away
Well there'll be fear and there'll be doubt
But they're just things that'll slow you down
Just put ‘em all in a great big pile
And stand back
(Chorus)
And burn, baby like a big ol' fire
Build it up with your one desire
And one of these days you just might change their minds
Shine the light, blind ‘em by
A big ol' fire
A big ol' fire
And one of these days you'll find someone
Who lights you up like the rising sun
But he's been hurt and he won't feel
Like handin' you a heart of steel
Well don't you run now just you stay
‘Cause you're the one that can melt away
The loneliness down in his heart
Just take him in your arms
(2nd Chorus)
And burn baby like a big ol' fire
Build it up with your one desire
And one of these days you just might find the love
You're dreaming of, risin' up a big ol' fire
(Bridge)
And when you get to where you're goin'
All you'll leave behind is ashes smolderin'
When you find the love you've always wanted
Never let it die
(Repeat 1st chorus)"
Diamond Rio's "We All Fall Down"
"She says, you know the monkey bar rules
As she kisses away his playground bruise
You don't have to skip a bar each time
To make it to the other side
She picked him up from out of the sand
Then tied the shoelace that read, Superman
(Chorus)
We all fall down
It's the gettin' back up that really counts
We live and we learn
To help someone up when it's their turn
In life there's only one guarantee
Your feet won't always be on the ground
‘Cause we all fall down
She says I know what you're goin' through
As she talks to the door of her daughter's room
Your heart feels like it's broken in two
But, baby, I'm here for you
The door opened and she stepped inside
She put her arms around her and said, it's ok to cry
(Repeat chorus)
He's forty-five and his job is gone
Cleans out his desk and he heads on home
Sees his kids out playin' in the yard
It's been a while since he's been hit so hard
He's as scared as a man can be
He tells his wife and she says, honey, look at me
Vixen-I love that song. I cry everytime I watch the end of Pay it Forward, just because of that song. And yeah wasn't it used in the Miracle ep of Roswell?
CommonRo4Me-Even Angels Fall is such a good song.
Man so much music touches me that I have lots of favorites but one that always gets me is Barbra Streisand's Time Machine. Cuz I always know I can identify with it. That, Woman In Love, Emotion, Evergreen, and The Way He Makes Me Feel are all "stop and listen" songs. Meaning if I am talking and that song comes on my radio or winamp, I HAVE to stop and listen or sing along. Evergreen was my parents' wedding song. And while they may not have the most harmonious of marriages, the song has such a pretty message. The Way He Makes Me Feel was almost a solo for me back in high school and it's a song I'll almost always sing to my current guy. Woman in Love seems to always describe me. And Emotion is just a really good song.
For other artists: Celine Dion's Falling Into You. That's another "stop and listen" song and one I'll always serenade someone with. It's just so melodic. It's a song you can't help but feel the power of or well maybe only I can't. Heh.
Shania Twain's Love Gets Me EveryTime, cuz I identify with that song wholeheartedly.
Ben Folds Five' Brick. I just love the haunting melody of the song.
Oh and of course Richard Marx's Hazard cuz it's just so sad.
All of these songs are zone out songs for me. If I have to stop and listen to the song no matter what, it's a zone out song.
Currently my Common Ro one is Offstage Lines. But Burgundy still does it to me too. Will be better when I know that one lyric of Offstage Lines that noone can seem to figure out. Then I can sing it and zone out at the same time. g
Looks like I have some new songs to check out

I've been thinking about this for the last few days, but I couldn't really think of anything. But then, last night, I went to see Gary Jules at the Hotel Cafe and the WHOLE SHOW was an amazing, zone out, perfection experience. Not any song inparticular, just the whole show. It was incredible.
This is my song here....people try to judge me for the crap I've done or currently do, they ask why I am the way I am, stuff like that...this is my reply. Try "Walking In My Shoes" and you'll see why...Most of them couldn't hang with the crap I've dealt with in life and still manage to be happy now.
Walking in My Shoes by Depeche Mode
I would tell you about the things
They put me through
The pain I've been subjected to
But the Lord himself would blush
The countless feasts laid at my feet
Forbidden fruits for me to eat
But I think your pulse would start to rush
Now I'm not looking for absolution
Forgiveness for the things I do
But before you come to any conclusions
Try walking in my shoes
Try walking in my shoes
You'll stumble in my footsteps
Keep the same appointments I kept
If you try walking in my shoes
If you try walking in my shoes
Morality would frown upon
Decency look down upon
The scapegoat fate's made of me
But I promise now, my judge and jurors
My intentions couldn't have been purer
My case is easy to see
I'm not looking for a clearer conscience
Peace of mind after what I've been through
And before we talk of any repentance
Try walking in my shoes
Try walking in my shoes
You'll stumble in my footsteps
Keep the same appointments I kept
If you try walking in my shoes
If you try walking in my shoes
Try walking in my shoes
Now I'm not looking for absolution
Forgiveness for the things I do
But before you come to any conclusions
Try walking in my shoes
Try walking in my shoes
You'll stumble in my footsteps
Keep the same appointments I kept
If you try walking in my shoes

If you try walking in my shoes
Try walking in my shoes
If you try walking in my shoes
Try walking in my shoes
