How would you describe CR's music?

If you were asked what kind of music Common Rotation played how would you describe it to someone? It's always hard for me to do for some reason. I end up saying that they are sort of folk rock but that they cover a ton of different styles and that they just plain rock. What would you guys say?

I usually say it's a mix of folk/rock. Then i say they do lots of covers of different styles. I tell people basically what Briel tells people. Hehe.

"Just don't stick me with a label."

More often than not, I don't describe their music with words. Instead, I pop in the CD and allow people listen to it, or, if said people are in town when Common Rotation has a show, I drag them to the gig and have them listen AND see the band live.

If someone makes me say it in a paragraph, I say, "Common Rotation is indescribably good. The songs boasts lyrics that are both self-deprecating and insightful, plus they have catchy backbeats and well-layered musical arrangements. The group combines musicians who are strong in and proud of their craft, and together, they offer an incredibly entertaining live show and a unique sound."

If someone tells me to stop rambling on, stop singing their praises constantly, and cut it down to a sentence, I say, "In short, they are must-hear, must-see."

If pressed to say what general category Common Rotation's sound falls under, I say, "Folk," or "Folk rock," as the band oft calls itself folk.

I would describe the band as very musical, and point out to people that they feature a variety of instruments and also some vocalizations. I would go so far as to say that there are notes and also chords. But usually when it comes up, my half of the conversation is something along the lines of, "Listen, you and I both know you've got nothing better to do on a Friday night, so get off your ass, you lazy fucker. I'll be by to pick you up in twenty minutes and you'd better be ready to have your socks rocked, you goddamn ingrate."

I usually say a mix of folk, rock, and pop. Sometimes I say upbeat folk. Usually I just say "I'll have to drag you to a show."

I'm terrible at describing music. It's just not one of my hidden talents. Generally I tell peeps that CoRo is "Folk Rock" but add that that doesn't actually mean anything and to fully appreciate the band you must see them play. Because CoRo isn't just about the music: It's about the attitude.

Dude. I have some. No, seriously, I do, and I swear it's not as geeky as it sounds. I have basically every episode written by Glen Morgan & Jim Wong. Plus some of their episodes of Booker (CEMENTHEAD!) and The Commish. And basically everything else they ever did in their careers. But I swear I'm not stalking them. Honest.

And hey, I can't fault anyone for Highlander (cheese-worthy though it is) because God bless the Welsh for Peter Wingfield. You should check him out in "Noah's Ark". He makes a cute vet. :D

While we're on random notes, I've recently discovered the glory of Stargate SG-1 and The Dead Zone. And also Six Feet Under. Ah, if only I had HBO...
