"Just don't stick me with a label."
More often than not, I don't describe their music with words. Instead, I pop in the CD and allow people listen to it, or, if said people are in town when Common Rotation has a show, I drag them to the gig and have them listen AND see the band live.
If someone makes me say it in a paragraph, I say, "Common Rotation is indescribably good. The songs boasts lyrics that are both self-deprecating and insightful, plus they have catchy backbeats and well-layered musical arrangements. The group combines musicians who are strong in and proud of their craft, and together, they offer an incredibly entertaining live show and a unique sound."
If someone tells me to stop rambling on, stop singing their praises constantly, and cut it down to a sentence, I say, "In short, they are must-hear, must-see."
If pressed to say what general category Common Rotation's sound falls under, I say, "Folk," or "Folk rock," as the band oft calls itself folk.
