First off, it's SO good I went to this show instead of shutting myself off in the library. I ended up studying at the very last minute, reading the concluding chapter of my professor's book RIGHT before the exam and being so inflamed that I pretty much sounded exactly like him on the exam. I think this will work in my favor.
Anyhow, last night's show...
I tried to ignore the little voice saying, "This is weird and freaky and what is wrong with this room?" but I really couldn't. Adam commented on the weird energy of the room and he was pretty much on the money; everyone was too quiet during the show (I never thought such a thing possible, but I guess I like a little bit of natural bustle)... there'd be yelling for about five seconds, then sudden and abrupt silence. Totally abrupt. I wanted to yell a few times but felt like if I did, someone would kick me for interrupting their trance.
I don't mean EVERYONE was like this. I just mean it was a different audience, a tough one, and it means everyone - even the die-hards - is just a little bit (read: a lot) less vocal. It clearly unsettled elements of the band, but I give them props for being up to the challenge. It was a great show, in spite of that strange zombie-like atmosphere, and I loved the closing-off with a Union Maid song, especially the one they did sing, "Don't Look at Me"... linking it up to the next show. Which I'm very glad I'll have company for.
Some funny, random moments, which are all I can recall:
* For whatever reason, there was some allusion to German, and Adam ran with it. He started ranting in mock-German, so into it there was actually Tenacious-D style spittle flying.
laugh Eric translated for him, "Songs from the Big Fear," "Answering Machine," etcetera. It was amusing, and elicited some laughter that warmed the room a bit.
* When they were climbing off stage, Adam asked, "What did Moses do?" and we all parted, yes, like the sea.
* "His thing is off." Something like that. There were technical difficulties with Adam's mike, so they joked about that for a bit. "His thing." Mmm-hmm.
That's really it. It was an enjoyable show, I got some groovy pictures which almost make me remember what the light is like, and I have the joy of knowing that when my Evidence final is over on Friday, I'll be able to celebrate in the coolest way of all - with a freakin' awesome Common Rotation show. Hey, that looks like the light again...
