I like that the writer elected to describe Adam and Eric as "pals." Just in case you didn't know - they're pals.

Art - Hehe. Well, hey, pals are good. I mean, we certainly don't want the review to be calling them rivals or archnemiseses...
Crap, just got "We could be lovers!" in my head... dammit.

I thought that referring to them as pals rather than bandmates was charming.

I know that you can't escape your past and to be proud of the things that you experienced to become the person you are today ... and all that crap, BUT do reviewers still have to refer to Adam being on Buffy? I mean COME ON ALREADY!! Give it a rest, we all know. There were like two sentences that even described the music and she only mentioned one song which is a cover to boot. She goes on and on about leather pants guy (oh the glory of leather pants man!!) and all I know about Common Rotation is that a singer was on a now cancelled TV show. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't music reviewers supposed to review and discuss music? Am I wrong?

Bottom you're not one of these people who get VERY ANGRY at the mention of CoRo & Buffy in the same sentence, are you, oops i guess we'll find out now. But seriously I think you're right the review was pretty useless, it didn't give any real info about the band but if it inspires a few new people to go along then it can't be all bad & hey the picture was cool.

It's publicity right? And remember "THERE IS NO BAD PUBLICITY!!" So what if they mention Buffy, their name is getting out there right! JMHO!!

CoRoHo -
I agree that the article could have been expanded upon... but - for what it's worth I think it's great that CoRo got coverage. Period. As for the review, actually, naming Adam's connection to Buffy is normal and should be expected. Some CoRo fans might not like it, but the fact is that Buffy was (and remains) a cult tv show with a large following and is, therefore, newsworthy.
If Ken suddenly started filling art gallaries with his clay sculpture and (a following of sculpture enthusiasts) a reviewer would begin mentioning Common Rotation as the band with Actor Adam Busch and Sculpter Ken Beck.
As Mezzer pointed out - it's the reviewer's hook. You hear about a new band called "Dogstar" and shrug your shoulders. You learn that Woah! Keanu Reeves is in it and suddenly you think Dogstar isn't such small potatoes.
Anyway, you asked. I answered.
The article could've been longer, but it did shine that spotlight on CoRo - and that's fantastic.
What makes me laugh is the issues people DO get angry about when, not to be rude, there are more serious issues to get angry about (like animal testing and the way in which society deals with discrimination). I'm sorry but I have had enough of sitting back and watching people get angry over matters which aren't worth getting upset about!

I'm still behind B.C.R.H. on this one. It's upsetting that people might get the idea that CR is another actors band. I'm more angry that this thought was censored just because it started a little action.

You know, I didn't even realize that some posts from this thread were missing until another poster pointed it out. I guess I stopped visiting after it got into a debate I didn't care to join.
I am not sure if censoring part of a thread is such a good idea. I guess I'd have to see which posts got ditched. Selective editing, egads, does GW run this board?! Just kidding, Steve!
Still, it'd be nice to see some of the OT threads removed as quickly as this one was apparently edited.

Yeah I remember which posts have been removed not going to mention what it was but it was correctly removed, it was completely off topic. (I think)
Hey! I'm still here!!! And I know exactly what posts were removed, 2 were mine, I printed 'em out though as I had the best comeback in the world! Ever!
Dana: To be honest, I'm glad this thread had been edited. The beginning debate was friendly with us all expressing our own opinions (for or against the Buffy tie in used when mentioning Adam and Common Rotation). I enjoyed the discussion. It lost it's appeal, however, when it went from 'friendly debate' to a bit of a spark between individual persons and some fairly rude comments were made. I'm all for friendly debate, but once anyone brings in comments that can be seen as personal attacks, well, it's no longer fun and I think it makes a lot of people shy away from discussion. The only bit that was removed from this thread were the ugly non topic bits.
Anyhow, dearie, glad you're posting now
As for the initial debate topic of the reviewer mentioning Adam's ties to Buffy - I stand by what I have previously said. Anon recently mentioned that it's upsetting to think of this band as another actors band. People unfamiliar with CoRo (which is still far too many people) might believe that to be true - but anyone who's ever seen CoRo perform just once will know differently. But the tie-in will make people who'd otherwise NOT check out CoRo perhaps be more inclined to do so.

H. Groupie,
The point of getting press is to in some way describe what the band is about. I'm a Buffy fan. I'm Hacker Groupie fan. I am not a fan of writer that would do little to no research into what the band does on stage or on a record. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is not mentioned on "The Big Fear" or at any live performance by Common Ro, yet it is not only mentioned but featured in an article about them. That gives people who haven't heard of the band the wrong idea.
You don't have to agree but most people would understand the logic in this argument.
I completely agree that the article should have described the band better. I think the article didn't say nearly enough and only touched on the sound, feeling, greatness of CoRo a small bit. It did, as someone else pointed out, mention that CoRo wasn't just another actor's band like Dogstar - even though Adam Busch is an actor. I appreciate that.
As for The Big Fear not mentioning Buffy - why should it? Unless CoRo suddenly begins to write songs for Buffy (or Angel) I can't imagine a reason for them to put a mention in. And live, well, at the CityWalk gig one of the guys (I don't recall who) joked about playing the Buffy theme song.
Perhaps the author of the Washington Post article spent too much time discussing Adam's Buffy persona - I'm not pressed about this point. I still feel that it is standard media practice to mention tie-ins of importance such as the fact that musician Adam Busch was on Buffy. The tie-in/hook isn't trying to downplay the importance of the band. Generally the hook is used to try to 'hook' more people into checking out a band/movie/whatnot.

PS.
Your "I'm [a] Hacker Groupie fan" comment made me chuckle. Thank you for that. Not having such a good day and feeling loggy after under 1.5 hours of sleep last night night, so I appreciate any amusing distraction.

"Look at me! I'm an amusing distraction! Like Alan Rickman's nose - for some people at least ..."
*toddles on out the door*
Me on just one cup of coffee is apparently pretty scary.
As for the article, I think the first band discussed was better known, so with the smaller space that was left for CoRo, the writer was just doing their best to "hook" people and reel them in. I think it would bother me more if it had been along the lines of "Adam, that Buffy actor, this is his band" because I see CR as a collaboration of all members (vocal or not), despite their daytime adventures.
Pointless rambles. Pointed distraction, like AR's nose. :p

While on the topic of the Washington Post they also ran a review of The Big Fear in Friday's weekend section.
Dana, my love.... you ARE amusing. And yes, so is Alan Rickman's nose. Though, I do admit I rather like it. It should be pointed out, however, that though I still admire the greatness that is Alan Rickman - I have a new (old) obsession. The greatness that is Brian Boitano. And I find myself wanting to add words like "double toe-loop" and "triple lutz" to my conversations.
As for the article, I think the only way the Buffy connection would have bothered me is if the author had put down the band and claimed the only reason to see CoRo was for the "Buffy" star status.
Anon: Ooh.. another review! Great that you found it "Taking a sizable bite out of the pop-rock audience shouldn't be a problem for Common Rotation, and not just because the quartet features singer Adam Busch..." I LOVE that.. I think the way reviewer Mike Joyce. In fact, as I read this review - I'm mighty impressed. It's absolutely fantastic!! The first reviewer should take lessons here.

... toward the very end they make a comment about "Buffyphiles," as if the entire crowd of fans is made up of Buffy fans, which just isn't true. This writer didn't just drop the connection and leave at that - they pulled it through the whole review.

Which is the exact same thing the 1st reviewer did. I can see why they would mention it once, but to make the last "Tie In" about it as well takes so much away from what the proper focus should be. The Music.

Would you believe I had to read the dang review three times to catch that? (that's why I do any editing off hardcopy, I miss things when reading from the screen... go figure)
I'm still okay with the review. I think it's very positive and absolutely saying this band is much more than a "actor's band" - which implies 'wanna be' status to the actor.
I also read his Buffyphiles comment to be anti Buffy... "The lyrics to 'Prime Time,' one of the album's rhythmically churning charmers, may give Buffyphiles pause ('A little self-deception / It gets the best reception / When you can't stomach the prime time')"

True, but I like the fact that this review was in fact a review, so the entire space (even though still too short) was dedicated to CR, and not divided between CR, another band, and barely managing to mention things about their music.
It would be nice if a reviewer could get to a live show some time and then comment on the tracks on the cd and how they are performed/received at a show. It was nice that it mentioned "Prime Time" specifically, but what about "Fortunate" or "Princess of Venice?" The reviewers will never know the uniqueness (or full impact) of those songs if they never see them live - not to mention "Savior."
Ah well. I am just glad that CR is getting some coverage. In the end, it was positive and that's cool.
Ok I dont actually understand what is trying to be said in this review.

Music

Music. It's what gets me up in the morning. Makes me smile. The song that springs to mind images of a beautiful kiss by moonlight. The first time you had your heart broken and listened to the same song over and over again to find relief and a safe place to crawl under the covers. It brings you back in time or it can be timeless.
Basically, certain Common Rotation songs make my heart stir when I hear them. I come to this board to find other people who enjoy the music as much as I do. Sometimes I find those kind people who share bits of music, pictures and show reviews. It makes me happy because if I am unable to make it to a show, I can share in the experience through the images and words of other posters. That's extremely cool. I love the Union Maid, and the people who post the lyrics on these boards because I don't have speakers on my computer at work. To those that make the effort, thank you. You make me smile.
Then there are the spats between fans. Unnecessary and filling up the board like viruses. I am all for a healthy debate, but does everything that happen to the band have to turn into a fight? Please realize, I am not attacking anyone in particular, I am just venting.
As for Buffy, I don't normally watch television because between work and going out, I would have to sacrifice sleep to do so. I did see one episode where there was a wedding with all these monsters in attendance. I liked it. Adam wasn't in it, but they were lovable slimy monsters, so I enjoyed it.
To the positive posters, you are the reason I come back to read. Thank you.

Hopefully you won't let any fights that sneak up on the board deter you from coming back here. I think, for the most part, this forum has some of the keenest individuals out there on the net. While I'm certainly no help (what with my obsession over non coro related man-types and general off-topic banter), the discussions on this board tend toward the intelectual with reviews of the music and commentary on the band's style.
This thread in particular started with a friendly debate, though for a squalid moment or two it turned a bit sour. Now that it's been cleaned up, I think, it's right as rain. Though I've never quite understood that - how can anything be 'right as rain.'
Your comment about music and how it effects your life was beautiful. I think a lot of people do not realise how fully music moves us in life. Music can inspire, comfort, anger and humour us. It is certainly a major aspect of my own life as I am both a singer and an avid fan of music.
Common Rotation, I believe, isn't just good music. It touches us. I think that's why we're all fans.
