So we have seriously been slacking on the lyrics for all of these new songs they've been churning out this year. And since one of my friends wanted to know the lyrics for Clear Channel I thought we should start a new lyrics thread. If there is a song you want lyrics for then post about it and someone will type them up when they have time. I love trying to figure them out myself.
Anyhow here's what I came up with for Clear Channel. See anything you think is wrong?
Clear Channel
Good morning precious
It’s yours for the taking
This breathless life
Is a property in the making
Have some working class in this town
Why don’t you sell
The last pair of dice
The airport terminal
Translucent sex comes standard in this biz
Yeah the doctor is in
To inspect just what’s his
Yeah he’s x-rayed a mainstream thoroughbred
Yeah he’s fully examined a whore
In his hotel bed now
I don’t want to
See right through you
I don’t want to predict your face
It’s a clear channel
That gives hidden clues
To the mysteries of this bad taste
No, I don’t want to
See right through you now
Here comes Paul Revere with a broken reaction
With his latest brand of beer
For his newest fixed attractions
If the overhead’s over our head
In this state of stale air
We can pick up from anywhere
And incorporate in Delaware
But remember all the things you reassessed through your god
Will someday be repossessed by the mob
Now I don’t want to
See right through you
I don’t want to predict your face
It’s a clear channel
That gives hidden clues
To the mysteries of this bad taste
No, I don’t want to
See right through you now
I don’t want to
See right through you now
I don’t want to
See right through you now
I don’t want to
See right through you now
This is from the UM version...not the live one. They changed a word or two when they did it live. I need some help with a few words in here. Unknown sections in brackets...
After Thought
What a revelation
Simple rule of space
In your indecision
Someone can take your place
I’m surprised you can hear me
Through that head of hair
Wouldn’t say you didn’t mind
But I’d say you didn’t care
Don’t you ever worry
About anything you're not
Well I’ve been fine
This whole time
Here in your after thought
Woo hooo
Woo hooo
You have all your friends now
I’m sure you missed them so much
You high enough now to look down upon those who pick you up
My [?] neutral
Well I do not feel my best
Hit the page in a [riddle] [?]
Now a star on a Rorschach test
Don’t you ever worry
About everything you're not
Cuz I’ve been fine this whole time
Here in your after thought
Well I’ve been fine this whole time
Here in your after thought
Now I’m a mean [man?]
My hands are [un?]tied
My lovely loss here
To which I must abide
But I am a strong man
With an undying fight
And I will have to make a stand
For what someone else thinks is right
But I want one more last night
I want to hold you here til the morning light
I want one more last night
What will become of me
I do not know
Well I set this caged bird free
With this elaborate show
Well I pray that time will tell
When the answers in the wind [that pass?]
Well I pray there is no hell
And that none of you were right
I want one more last night
I want to hold you here til the morning light
I want one more last night
I want one more last night
I want to hold you here til the morning light
I want one more last night
I used the UM from April 13th, 2004 with the Trumpet for these lyrics. They are a teensy bit different in other versions. A word here, a word there.
Broken Arrows (That Was A Time) a.k.a. Never Feel At Home
The matchbook I left
On the counter top ledge
Yeah the dream that has spent all our fortunes
And the coffee stained notes
With the hand written quotes
And the songs we used to sing last June
Now that was a time
Before we were shadows
Before broken arrows
Ever set their tone
No I suppose I will never feel at home
Now that was a time
Before we were shadows
Before broken arrows
Were ever set in stone
No I suppose I won’t ever feel at home
No I suppose I will never feel at home
Ever notice that the word Heaven is just heave with an 'e' at the end?

In Heaven
whistle
I’m on my away to Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
On my way to Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
On my way to Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
Yes Lord I do want to go
Cuz there ain’t no dyin’ in Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
Ain’t no dyin’ in Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
There ain’t no dyin’ in Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
Yes Lord I do want to go
Now there’s only livin’ in Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
Only livin’ in Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
Only livin’ in Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
Yes Lord I want to go
whistle
There ain’t no lies in Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
Ain’t no lies in Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
Ain’t no lies in Heaven’
Don’t you wanna go?
Yes Lord I want to go
There ain’t no gamblin’ in Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
Yes there ain’t no gamblin’ in Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
Ain’t no gamblin’ in Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
Yes Lord I want to go
Now I’m on my way to Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
On my way to heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
I’m on my way to Heaven
Don’t you wanna go?
Yes Lord I want to go
Last one for tonight, I promise! One of my favorites...

Although some of the newer verse is strange. At least what I hear. Maybe I'm wrong.
Means of Survival
Roses shower the Maltese figurehead
Tropic of Cancer
The mortal wound of [tempered sand? I was never sure about this line.]
Maybe county line
Pulling on both hemispheres
My lover and Einstein
Screwin’ behind my back
At least that’s what I hear
Now the whisky’s unforgiving
It burns right on down
That’s right, it’s a living
But it ain’t worth a dime
So I’ll be waiting right here
As a means of survival
And I’ll be waiting right here
Waiting for my captain’s arrival
Took my grandma, [fetus?] and the mother too
Yeah it was an eyesore
But she didn’t have no clue
Yeah but you and I know better
We’ve seen the lights of a discoed [wall?, war?, world?]
When we get hungry we eat the [adam?, atom?] down to its core
And there ain’t no preacher
Can fault to seal this day
No there ain’t no body of trust worthy enough to show me
There way
No way
So I’ll be waiting right here
As a means of survival
And I’ll be waiting right here
Waiting for my captain’s arrival
I'll go ahead and add a CRUM Lyrics section to the archive I suppose. If anyone wants to transcribe songs, that's cool. I added a credit to the transcriber at the top of the file, and if corrections need to be made, just email me dana[at]onthedial[dot]com.
Roses showering the Maltese figurehead
Tropic of Cancer
The mortal wound of ten percent [I think it's this, but I'm still unsure haha]
Made county line
Pulling on both hemispheres
My lover and an Einstein
Screwin’ behind my back
At least that’s what I hear
Now the whisky’s unforgiving
It burns right on down
That’s right, it’s a living
But it ain’t worth a dime
So I’ll be waiting right here
As a means of survival
And I’ll be waiting right here
Waiting for my captain’s arrival
Took my grandma, fetus, and the mother too
Yeah it was an eyesore
But she didn’t have no clue
Yeah but you and I know better
We’ve seen the lights of a discoed wall [I'm gonna go with "wall", but it could be "war"]
When we get hungry we eat the atom down to its core
And there ain’t no preacher
Can fault to seal this day
No there ain’t nobody trustworthy enough to show me
Their way
No way
So I’ll be waiting right here
As a means of survival
And I’ll be waiting right here
Waiting for my captain’s arrival
Ooh…
I love this one! I hope it's on Eric's solo record.

For most of the 2003 lyrics there's a website : http://www.geocities.com/crlyric/
I think it's a poster named Pellenaka who maintained it, but I may be completely wrong.
Yeah, that's my site. Thanks for recc'ing it, Delphine. I haven't updated it this year, though.

Tarred and Feathered
I was pushing proposals away
Beneath the corners of the day
I was moving units to pass time to honor
I put my medals on
And caught the ferry across the pond
In search of the most deadly bomber
My rival to extreme would be exactly what it seemed
No less than the colors ringing true
Yes they'd be expecting me
While collecting their fees
On the things I was too terrified that I might do
Well ahhh yes you're covered in tar
Your feathered from head down to your toes
Yes ahhh oh I can't take it far
But I'll surely tell you where to go
Well I was pushing proposals away
Beneath the corners of the day
I was moving units to pass time to honor
I put my medals on
And caught the ferry across the pond
In search of the most deadly bomber
Well yes they'd be expecting me
While collecting fees
On the things I was too terrified that I might do
But ahhh yes you're covered in tar
Yeah, your feathered from head down to your toes
Yes ahhh oh I can't take it far
But I'll surely tell you where to go
Where to go
~Not finished
Not even close~

Put The Lights Out
It's overrated
It's under writed
Stipulated
It's bonified, yeah
Bite it hard
With your teeth
Start small
And blow it up with all of your might
It's all the same
It's all the same
Put the lights out on you
I'll put the lights out on you

One Checks Out
There was an old woman who lived across the way
And who she was no one could say
And the day she died nobody cried
As the ambulance pulled away
Now one checks out
Another checks in
What's it all about?
I just can't begin to say dear
Cuz it's a complicated subject
With a capital "C"
From carriage to the coffin
It seems so easy
But we know how to let the dreamers be
One checks in
Another checks out
Leaving no answers
[Your penny of doubts?]
For us my dear
So monday is here
And without fear
We face the day
With no price to pay
In tears you see
Cuz we know how to let the dreamers be
But oh there's a life in there
Oh yes there's strife to bear
There's love
There's happiness
In spite of despair
But you don't even have to care
When one checks out
Or another checks in
It's all in the cycle
From start to end to see
So we know how to let the dreamers
We know how to let the dreamers
We know how to let the dreamers be

Okay so the first "Over It" doesn't actually have those words (over it) in the song but I think it was originally un named and then when the "Over It" from the 21st came out we saw they sounded the same and so we named the first one from the 3rd the same name. Either way I really like this song (these songs? haha).
Over It ~ 04.03.04
Competant and fast
For one
That that commercial line I gave you
Wouldn't save you a dime
Speed increased til dawn
That cigarettes and wine I bought you
Wouldn't cost you your time
Your sweet precious time
While I'm dancing the door up to the bridge
[With a glance?] down below
Feet couldn't fail me but they just did
Now I'm not much left to show
But an altercation
A crystal map of celebrity
Missing linked information
Step up, step away from me
Competant and fast
For one
That that commercial line I gave you
Wouldn't save you a dime
Speed increased til dawn
The cigarettes and wine I bought you
Wouldn't cost you your time
Your sweet precious time
But I'm dancing the door up to the bridge
[With a glance?] down below
My feets couldn't fail me but they just did
Now I'm not much left to show
But an altercation
A crystal map of celebrity
Missing linked information
Step up, step away from me
Step up, step away
Over It ~ 04.21.04
Wooooo
Hey there's your lips
And that's it
That's the most that I can give you
I'll outlive you [in a step? and then...?]
As far as I can throw you
All the life lines that could save you
You went under and I'm over it
I'm over it
Yes I
I'm counting the ways to dance through the door
I swing the hinge without a care
I'm stomping my feet right through the floor
As I stumble out into the air
Without a trace of warning
Well I'm a matchstick for someone else
I craved the dawn with yawning
Making myself sick over my health
Woo'ing

Ever notice how you think a song is about one thing when you first hear it and then when you transcribe the lyrics it takes on a whole new meaning because you never REALLY listened before? Yeah...
Might Never Know
Don't say one in a million
Don't cover up the stars
No no
Don't play with dirty dolls
And don't ask just how far it goes
Cuz I don't know
I don't know
Now I might never know
Amelia come inside
From the grey modern places
To learn all the faces
That you don't know
Don't dream of parking structures
Built up from the core
No no
Don't scream, the wonders of children
Don't ask me just what's in store
Cuz I don't know
No I don't know
And I might never know
Amelia come inside
From the grey modern places
To learn all the faces
That you don't know
Amelia come away from the flashes of lightning
I know it's exciting but
You don't know
No you don't know
And you might never know

Wasn't It You
Was an ache [of spring?]
In a tunnel closing in
Walls they cheat
and they sting
Was a vision within a dream
Wasn't it you said goodbye
And left me standing there that night
Without the strength to wonder why
Without the will left to fight
No fault
No shame with me
It was better
Oh I couldn't stay
All in the balance
Debts are paid
It was better off this way anyway
But wasn't it you said goodbye
Left me standing there that night
Without the strength to wonder why
No will left to fight

I hope you guys don't mind me doing these all. Don't mean to be a "thread hog".
The Imposter
Try to be too bad
Try to talk too tough
Try to check the lair
Think he can handle enough
But he's not the man you think that he can be
I just don't know how you can't see
That he
Is only the imposter
That he is only the imposter
You never been this thoughtful
You've always been too smart
And you know all I bought
[.....................?]
But he's not the man you think that he can be
I just don't know how you can't see
That he
Is only the imposter
And he is only the imposter
When I said that I was lyin'
I might have been lying
Never let me hear you say you're not trying
No
No no
This is a big decision
You're not dissapointing
He's got double vision
[Any woman double charming??]
But he's not the man you think that he can be
I. Just. Don't know why you can't see
The imposter
That he is only the imposter
It's only going to end here
Oh you know it girl
He is only the imposter
Don't believe the lies
From the new Hotel Cafe CD (not too diff from the ones B posted)...

There's a moth at the carnival
He don't follow the sun
There's a walkin', talkin', [postin'?] doll
She grabs his wallet and his six piece gun
Sportin' trends of all your friends
Been dodgin' the books with the looks you read
Long long, now it's an elephant's song
Afraid of the chain of shrunken heads
Now the prizes are for everyone
Come one and come all
Yeah the prizes are for everyone
Just pick up a ball

Common Rotation
June 13 2004, 11:23 AM
I started to figure out some lyrics on my own
It's not a crum song, just one of the old songs
I tried to figure out "Common Rotation" I'm not sure if I got it right (at least, I hope it's not totally wrong ) , and there are a few missing parts...
Common Rotation
Your story is getting [...]
I think I must be on my way
I got my head in the sky
But I'm sorry I can not stay
But out of [creedy] day
that life is simply takin'
I'm tired of this I had enough of fakin'
in this constant Common Rotation
with talking to you isn't helpin'
and I can't wait for the end of this
still everything comes shivering down
And patients waves inside
and your eyes can [read] about
what [I got/ oh God]
[..] just wait and see
But as it [...]
up on [...]
oh it's funny how [...]
[...]
and I can't wait for the end of this
still everything comes shivering down

Common Rotation
June 13 2004, 1:43 PM
Your story is getting tiresome
I think I must be on my way
I've got my head in the sky
Well I'm sorry I cannot stay
But I decree today
That life is simply takin'
I'm tired of this I had enough of fakin'
In this constant Common Rotation
But talking to you isn't helpin'
And I can't wait for
The end of this
Til everything comes
Shivering down
Shivering down
Then patience waits inside
And your asking me
About what
Oh God
Well just wait and see
But as we turn and turn
And burn and burn
We learn
Of all [obstruction?]
Oh it's funny how, funny how, funny how
This doesn't amuse me
And you know
I can't wait for
The end of this
Til everything comes
Shivering down
Shivering down
We go round round round round
We go round round round round
We go round round round round
The big payback (yeah this is getting into the next song)
This is all something you dreamed up
This is all something you schemed up
You're hopes are not shattered like a porcilen cup
Your mind was only battered and a bit roughed up
But oh you can't be wrong
That would leave you strung along
But oh you can't be right
That wouldn't help you sleep tonight
We all face things that hurt our pride
And we all have a few things left to hide
But you created the story now
To make yourself feel better inside
And I hope it makes you feel better inside
Fallin' in
Fallin' out
Face the sin
Face the doubt
Turn your head
And face the sun
Now it could have been anyone
Turn turn turn
In deceit
While you try to make ends meet
Please don't transcribe these words
But listen to what you heard
Don't change what you took
From that last [song on?] love
Fallin' in
Fall back out
Face the men
Face the doubt
Turn your head
Face the sun
Well it could happen to anyone
Turn turn turn
From deceit
While you try to make these ends meet
Please don't transcribe these words
Just listen to what you heard
Don't change what you took
From that last [song on?] love
I can't focus on the things I wanted done today
I can't see past the front of the mind that's in the way
I'm not square but I'm around it
I'm not there but I'm astounded
By the way you take a picture
And the way I'm just a fixture for the light
I can't focus on the things I wanted done today
I can't see past the front of the mind that's in the way
No I'm not square but I'm around it
I'm not there but I'm astounded
By the way you take a picture
And the way I'm just a fixture for the light
One can think it two
One or two or three
I've been running numbers all day long
And I'm down upon my knees
One can look for ways
One can look for signs
But I've been looking all day long
For the one I left behind
It's a proven fact
Strength of logic
I couldn't come close to kiss her
I must admit to be exact
I'm not strong enough to miss her
One can count the way
To and from her in time
Well I've been thinking all day long
About the one I've left behind
Yeah I'll be thinking all day long
About the one I left behind
Like this one. And I don't know why I just transcribed it when it's a cover song and I could have just looked up the lyrics but oh well! Dur. haha
She Belongs To Me~ 053004
She's got everything she needs
She's an artist and she don't look back
She's got everything she needs
She's an artist and she don't look back
She'll take the dark out of the nighttime
Paint the daytime black
You'll start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees
You'll start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees
But you'll wind up peeking through a keyhole
Down upon your knees
No she never stumbles
No she's got no place to fall
She never stumbles
No she's got no place to fall
She's nobody's child
No lord, can't touch her at all
She has an Egyptian ring
And it sparkles before she speaks
She has an Egyptian ring
And it sparkles before she speaks
She's a hypnotist collector
You are a walking antique
So bow down to her on Sunday
Salute her when her birthday comes
Bow down to her on Sunday
Salute her her birthday comes
For Halloween give her a trumpet
And for Christmas buy her a drum
She's got everything she needs
She's an artist and she don't look back
She's got everything she needs
She's an artist and she don't look back
She'll take the dark out the nighttime
Paint the daytime black
Yeah she'll take the dark out of the nighttime
Paint the daytime black
She'll paint the daytime black
She'll paint the daytime black
I cannot miss
The 428
I can't not go
Can't be late
Can we do this
Some other time
That'd be wrong
To miss my train
Be a crime
No I won't [fall?]
I won't have the time

Thank you for transcribing the songs. I can't understand half of what Kufs is singing sometimes.
I must say that most times I just really enjoy the music. But I appreciate the songs even more so, now that I know how ingenious the lyrics are.
We want a simple [musing? music?]
With a moderate [base?]
We want the gentlest pin prick
Through the edge of our fates
Is it out of the question
Is it too in the middle of the road
To leave this procession
Before your head implodes
Or do I have to paint a picture once again
But the feelings are mutual
And the timing is right
From the richness of retro
To make the rythmns come out right
Is it out of the question
To take the safest route
To leave this procession
Before it takes you out
Oh I have to paint a picture once again
Do I have to paint a picutre
Do I have to paint a picture
Do I have to paint a picture once again
We want a simple [musing? music?]
With a moderate [base?]
We want the gentlest pin prick
To cover the edge of our fears
Is it out of the question
Is it too in the middle of the road
To leave this procession
Before your head implodes
Oh do I have to paint a picture once again
Do I have to paint a picture
Do I have to paint a picture
I have to paint a picture once again

My mind won't be savoring

But I can move

Let's go for a drive ~ 2004-06-06
It's been coming on for sometime now
got to get out of this town
People've been talking
and I've been drinking
you know, it's getting me down
My car is fucked up

Hope that that's okay
I ain't got much money

Let's go for a drive
Got to feel so alive
Just get up and go

Let's go for a drive
Let's go for a drive
Will know when we arive
Just where we're going
go without knowing
let's go for a drive
When the road ends
nothing can keep me from you

I hold tight to the curves

But I'm not around
To stare you down
To prod your heart with my eyes
And if it was that easy
Then it wouldn't come as no surprise

I don't have a LJ. It's hard enough to keep up posting here.
You can always take the lyrics, Dana. It's all public. And I always ask for help to fill in the blanks. Someday I may actually get all the words to one of the UMs! Ha, actually I did almost all the words to Call It/Near Miss. (What a lovely song, it's still in my head along with the latest Given Signs).
If you could mention that I started a transcription, that would be nice.

It'll Be All Right* 2004-10-28
October 28 2004, 6:11 PM
That second verse doesn’t make any sense, but I can’t tell what Eric is saying. And in the last verse, I swear he’s saying “If you leave you after a while”, which I would think should be “If I leave you after a while”.
Lovely lead in and lead out music (or whatever the proper term is).

But she [stood out?]
Til it’s gone
But it’s all wrong
I see that now
It’s gone on too long, anyhow
It’s all right
It will leave you after a while
It’ll be all right, [my child?]
Walk after dark
Just for the air
To sell these thoughts
And forget them somewhere
Up on 14th Street
Without a doubt
Gotta get off this beat
And back in town
Cause it’s all wrong
I see that now
It’s gone on too long, anyhow
Well, it’s all right
We’ll leave you after a while
Yeah it’s all right [my child?]
I’m telling you
It’ll all be fine
Holding on to this
Big ol’ painted sign
But it’s all wrong
I see that now
It’s gone on too long, anyhow
Well, it’ll be all right
If [you] leave you after a while
It’ll be all right, [my child?]

I Want It To Stop* 2004-10-30
October 30 2004, 5:36 PM
Sometimes I don't know how to approach the lyrics. I could just write down what I hear and not make sense of it, or I can actually try to understand what's trying to be said. But sometimes, if you think the song is about one thing, you hear what you want to hear. Or you think, oh, he must be making a rhyme here, what rhymes with that other word? And he hasn't picked a rhyming word at all.
I mean, I hear "tell them from the stood" and what does that mean? So I think it must be something else. I thought "tell them where you stood" would fit, but Eric seems to be singing "from" not "where". So what would go with "good" but maybe not rhyme perfectly? How about "tell them from the stoop", you know, sitting on the stoop and watching the world go by?
Or I could have it all wrong and getting stuck in a thought makes me not hear what being said. Sigh, what is he saying?

Happy Halloween
CR 2004-10-31 (597 kb) 3:55
Well, it’s that time of the year again
When everyone gets in a costume
And dresses up like blood sucking ghouls, ghosts and goblins
Yeah, I get all those crazy kids at my door asking for something sweet
In exchange for trying to scare me, they ask for a Trick or Treat
The most that ever happens is that I get a good laugh
And throw some candy corn at them
Heck, somebody has to eat that sh*t
Well, before I knows it
I’m on the horn with my friends contemplating lost time
And wondering whether we should count down the 100 scariest movies of all time
Or go up to the spooky house and get ourselves a chill down our spine
Nothing seems to scare us much though these days
Not even Osama bin Laden
Well, I was preparing to go out for the evening
When I heard a knock at my door
It was a boy Trick or Treating
He was dressed up like the Terminator
I told him he had to come back later
And bring a hockey mask
I don’t donate nothing to the Republican Party
See, that was my joke
See, I’m a comedian for Halloween
Huh, the kid just shook his head
And said, without any, any touch of irony,
He said “I’ll be back!”
Well, my friends we bobbed for apples
Carved ourselves a pumpkin
We had a few costume contests
Needless to say, I didn’t win any of them
We tried our damnedest to think of something
Something scary that would freeze our brains
And bring out all the worst fears we ever had
And we thought that if each of us told a scary story
It would work, we’d find something
Well, we talked until we was bored to tears
Well, it wasn’t until I got home
Put on the cable news channel
And had a few pumpkin beers
That I heard it
The most bone chilling, hair raising sound of them all
A chant that started right from the boogeyman’s mouth
Would have made Edgar Allen Poe sound as bland as any one of his peers
The massive crowd, looking like Night of the Living Dead
Gets louder as that man appears
Yep, the scariest dreams I’ll ever have, I know it
Hearing those blood curdling screams
“Four more years!”
“Four more years!”
Happy Halloween

CR 2004-11-02 (542 kb) 3:33
Well, we busted out of class
Had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a 3-minute record, baby
Than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear that neighborhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes
And follow your dreams down
Well, we made a promise that we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers on a winter's night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Well, now young faces grow sad and cold
And hearts of fire that grow so old
We swore like blood brothers against the wind
I'm ready to grow young again
I hear your sister's voice calling us home
Across the open yard
Maybe we'll find some place of our own
With these drums and these guitars
Well, we made a promise that we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers on a winter's night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Now on the streets tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging
You say it ain't ours anymore to win
Well, I want to sleep beneath
The peaceful skies in my lover's bed
With that wide open country in your eyes
And these romantic dreams in my head
Well, we made a promise that we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers on a winter's night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Well, we made a promise that we swore we'd always remember

Walk Thru the Park * 2004-11-03
November 3 2004, 4:33 PM
I think the 2004-11-03 version is slighty different from the 2004-10-12 version. Of course, it’s the same words I can’t make out in both versions. And some of the words I thought I understood when Eric was singing solo on 10-12 sound different when Adam sings them solo or when they sing them together on the 11-03 version. Maybe the words did change.

Aaaah! Too many words, too fast.
I'm naming it "Don't Miss Me" only because those are the first words of the refrain, we have another UM we called "Devil's Bargain" that's an entirely different song, and we haven't used "Don't Miss Me" as a title yet.
Is anybody else working on these lyrics? Not only do I miss words, I know I'm hearing some of the words wrong.

Call It* / Near Miss 2004-11-07
November 8 2004, 3:41 AM
I posted this in a UM thread, but I thought I'd repost it here since the song came up again.
I'm still not sure about the last word of the second line. I only put down "surly" because it rhymes with "burly" but it still sounds like it's "a sir hee" on 10-19 and "a surfeit" or something like that on 11-07. I can't figure out what word/words that could really be. A little help please? It's just one line!
I really like how they do the refrain on this last version, singing over each other with different words. It's the first one where it hasn't been just Eric singing. I can't quite make out what the new words are, but it just sounds good!
Call me headstrong
Call me surly
Call me king kong
Call me hurly burly
But I will not
Bow out and forfeit the game
Call it foul play
Call it justice
Call it hearsay
Call it a near miss
But I will not
Bow my head in shame
The fabric's fading
The water's spinning down the drain
The kid's elated
Yeah he's enabled by the king
It's all much sweeter
Than the river running past the rain
If I'm a keeper
And you're the mother of the name
Call it cancer
Call it courtesy
Call out the answer
Call in the agency
But I will not
Breathe in authority
Call on the cops
Call it procedure
Call out all the shots
Call it search and seizure
But I will not
Can't want calling for free
Cause the fabric's fading
The water's spinning down the drain
The kid's elated
Yeah he's enabled by the king
And it's all much sweeter
Than the river running past the rain
If I'm the keeper
And you're the mother of the name

So "Afternoons and Coffespoons" was running thru my head this morning for no apparent reason. Suddenly the word "assertive" popped into my head. Could it be...
Call me headstrong
Call me assertive
Call me king kong
Call me hurly burly
But I will not
Bow out and forfeit the game
Still doesnt't sound right. Still sounds like it should be "Call me a... something"
I'm gonna corner these guys at a show and make them tell me what that damn word is.

And it's all much sweeter
Than the river running past the rain
If I'm the keeper
Then you're the mother of the name
You're the mother of the name

Call It* / Near Miss
November 8 2004, 10:07 PM
After so many versions, I get stuck with what I heard before.
- On 4/5 and 4/29 it sounded like surly, but the last 2 UMs it sounded like a hard consonant in the word.
- On 4/29 it was "bow out or forfeit this game"
- I thought "fabric fading" went with "water spinning", but "fabric faded" goes with "kid's elated". I swear it's "fading" on 4/29. In fact, I'd swear the water is spilling down the drain on 4/29.
- On 11/07, in the first refrain I hear "If I'm the keeper, you're the mother of the name". No connecting word at all.
- I thought "call out the answer" goes with "call in the agency". But "any" makes sense, too and it's what I thought the first time. I was wondering what agency Eric was referring to. On 4/29 Eric says "call out any agency". How about "call in any agency" on 11/07?
- "Get one call in for free" makes sense. I didn't understand what I had for that line, but I just wrote it down.
- I still hear "If I'm the keeper and you're..." in the last refrain for 11/07. Even though "if / then" sounds right, too.
Most of this is just grammatical, except for "bow out or" versus "bow out and". That kind of changes the meaning slightly.
I realize the songs are living, breathing things and not written in stone. But these guys keep you on your toes, don't they? It's fun to hear the songs change and evolve. It's a privledge to see the creative process at work. I'm really enjoying myself trying to decipher the words.
And yes, I'm also really listening to the spirit of the song, as well as the words.

Wow you really put a lot of time and thought into this.
I know a lot of people appreciate it when we transcribe lyrics though so keep up the good work. Just keep in mind that, like you said, they aren't written in stone. Lyrics can change from version to version and even during live performance they may be different from what we've heard on the UM. Also, sometimes the guys haven't even figured out what they want the lyrics to be so that will cause changes from song to song too. What I used to do is just pick one version, usually the newest one but not always, and transcribe that. I'm not saying that is how it needs to be done but it might save you a lot of trouble. But it looks like you are having fun with it though so keep on doing it however you feel happiest.
I hope you don't think I'm trying to tell you how to do things or that I sound like a know-it-all. :-/ Just trying to help...

Re: New Lyrics thread!

I try out every version because sometimes they enunciate better on one version than another. Or the music isn't as loud on one version, so you can just hear the words better. Yes, sometimes it's confusing since I don't know what they're thinking about when they write the words, but more often than not it's enlightening.
And, I try out every version because it's just plain fun to hear it change.
You hear 12 lines. Then with a refrain on the next version. Oh, listen, here's a version with some more lines and a repeat of the refrain. Every version more words get tweaked. Ok, that sounds much better with the rhythm. Maybe the lines get moved around. Or that phrase gets dropped. Here's a repeat of a couple lines of the refrain. Now it flows and gives a finality to the song. Oh, here's a version with more instrumentation than just Eric's guitar. Hey, now Adam is singing along with Eric, that's another layer. Wow, don't their voices sound great together?
I love hearing the songs grow into something more than they started out to be. There's just something magical about it.

Miracle Man
Elvis Costello
From the 1977 album “My Aim Is True”
CR 2004-11-19 (597 kb) 3:56
You never asked me what I wanted. You only asked me why.
I never thought that so much trouble was restin' on my reply,
I could say it was the nights when I was lonely
and you were the only one who'd come.
I could tell you that I like your sensitivity,
when you know it's the way that you walk.
Why do you have to say that there's always someone
who can do it better than I can?
But don't you think that I know that walking on the water
won't make me a miracle man?
Baby's gotta have the things she wants.
You know she's gotta have the things she loves.
She's got a ten-inch bamboo cigarette holder
and her black patent leather gloves.
And I'm doing everything just tryin' to please her,
even crawling around on all fours.
Oh, I thought by now that it was gonna be easy,
but she still seems to want for more.
Why do you have to say that there's always someone
who can do it better than I can?
But don't you think that I know that walking on the water
won't make me a miracle man?
I hear they're givin' you a bad reputation
just because you've never been denied.
You try to say you've done it all before.
Baby, you know that you just get tired.
Yet everybody loves you so much, girl.
I just don't know how you stand the strain.
Well I thought by now it was gonna be easy
and I don't wanna do it all in vain.
Why do you have to say that there's always someone
who can do it better than I can?
But don't you think that I know that walking on the water
won't make me a miracle man?

Here a tower shinning bright
Once stood gleaming in the night
Where now there’s just the rubble in the hole
Here the paddies and the frogs
Came to gamble on the dogs
Came to gamble on the dogs not long ago
Oh the torn up ticket stubs
From a hundred thousand mugs
Now washed away with dead dreams in the rain
And the car-parks going up
And they’re pulling down the pubs
And it’s just another bloody rainy day
Oh sweet city of my dreams
Of speed and skill and schemes
Like Atlantis you just disappeared from view
And the hare upon the wire
Has been burnt upon your pyre
Like the black dog that once raced
Out from trap two

Where Our Love Never Dies*
November 25 2004, 4:44 AM
I thought I did this one already, but I can’t find it posted. I'll list it now since this was sung at the Nov 24 Hotel Café show. Hmm, I'm guessing this was probably Eric's solo, so it probably doesn't have a name on the set list.
I like seeing the differences between the first and second versions. I wonder what it sounded like tonight?
And as always, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Where Our Love Never Dies*

Darling I fell off the wagon again
This darkness, this blanket to the skies
Even though my boot heels are a-dragging
I can’t spare these bloodshot eyes
For the killer lies above our bed frame
Shouting out a sickening surprise
And I’ve done many things to wreck my name
But I never [dawned] at the skies
Cause I know
That somewhere
In your heart there’s you and I
There’s a place where our love never dies
I hear your footsteps on the other side of the world
And I breathe in your twinkling eyes
The stars they’re as real as you are to me
The truth no distance could hide
Cause I know
That somewhere
In my heart there’s you and I
There’s a place where our love never dies

But I've never worn his disguise

Some of Them Will Laugh* 2004-12-09
December 9 2004, 7:36 PM
OK, the only thing about the current lyrics and the ones from the 09-28-2004 UM is that someone is still laughing. Don't you laugh at me for what I think I'm hearing. I'm just trying to have it make some sense to my addled brain. Heh, if the guys actually read this, I can just picture them looking at each other and saying, "How the hell is she hearing that?" Some of Them Will Laugh*
UM 2004-12-09
Fall by the wayside
Catch the math
Fall like jasmine
Drawn like a graph
Some of them will laugh
Some of them will laugh with you
Some of them will cry
Some of them will laugh
Speaking of numbers
Here’s a price
They’ll tag on the answer
When you’re out of advice
Some of them will laugh
Some of them will laugh with you
Some of them will laugh
Some of them will laugh with you
Something soft whispered in my ear
No doubt about it
See the thought, curious and near
The bargain on your side, dear
[…]
An original piece
[…] capsule
While some will not cease
Some of them will laugh
Some of them will laugh with you
Some of them will lie
Some of them will laugh with you
Something soft whispered in my ear
No doubt about it
See the thought, curious and near
The bargain on your side, dear
Some of them will laugh
Some of them will laugh with you
Some of them will laugh
Some of them will laugh at it
Something soft whispered in your ear
I found paradise
See the thought, curious and near
The bargain on your side, dear
The bargain on your side
I believe that See the thought, curious and near is actually
'See the thought, hear the auctioneer'
in every instance.

Re: New Lyrics thread!
December 18 2004, 6:26 PM
Welcome to watcher652’s attempt to discern another set of lyrics without knowing what the hell she’s hearing. Why do I even try? Because I’m obsessive. I love puzzles. It’s fun, even with no answer. The music is worth listening to multiple times. Maybe on the 25th time it will actually make sense. I want to understand.
Maybe “this is a shelter” is really “this is a shout out”. Or, maybe it's something else entirely. The lyrics would have a lot more brackets, but I got tired of putting brackets around all the words I really wasn’t sure of. I actually was certain “Repeat after me” was “You paid after me”, but what the heck was that supposed to mean?. I was so excited when I figured that one out.
As usual, review and please, please fill in the blanks or revise the lyrics.

They're not scary, what's scary is a wanting

Thanks, Anon! Boy, that's sure is different from what I could make out. How the heck do you do that? You must have some of the poet in you, I know I sure don't.
It sounds like "shapeless hauntings" instead of "sheepish hauntings" to me, though. What do you think?
It's a great sounding song, even if I'm having trouble with the words. Latest revision -

Last Christmas
By George Michael
UM 295. 2004-12-22 (638 kb) 4:14
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby do you recognize me?
Well it’s been a year, you know it doesn't surprise me
I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I love you" and I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now I know you'll fool me again
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you, and your soul of ice
My God I thought you were someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on
A face on her lover, with a fire in his heart
A man undercover, but you tore me apart
Ooh, now I've found another love
You'll never fool me again
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Well, last Christmas I gave you my heart
And the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Well, jingle bells
Batman smells
Robin laid an egg
The Batmobile lost its wheel
And the Joker got away
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
And the very next day you gave it away
Well, this year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you took it away
Maybe next year I’ll give it to someone
I'll give it to someone special
Someone special
Someone special
Someone special
Someone special
Merry Christmas
The Jingle Bells lyrics are a little addendum to the song. Eric sings some other lyrics under the last repeat of the chorus. I can’t quite make out the words except for
I will never [...]
[...] still [...]
Though it [...]
You know I'm not a fool
Peace and a joyous holiday, everyone.

Hey Maybellique. Eric sings One More Last Night. I don't think he's ever done it live (I could be wrong) but it's been on the Union Maid twice. If you go here you can download the songs. One is on May 19, 2004 and the other May 23, 2004.
