concert report
October 18 2004, 2:46 PM
Hi -- I don't have the set list and for whatever reason, my computer will not let me into the Union Maid section of this site, so some of the songs that were new to me may be very familiar to people who can access Union Maid -- so please bear with me ...
From last night's Eric Kufs concert at Genghis Cohen, the set was:
1. "Dancer"
2. Introduced the song with, "I have this bird that ... tells me not to give long introductions to songs ... I wrote a song about it." I think the title is "My Bird Don't Sing" -- part of the chorus is, "I don't do that."
3. "I've been thinking all day long about the one I left behind." (New to me, but I'm pretty sure this is a Union Maid song, as I have seen the lyrics referred to on the message board.)
4. "Everything Under the Sun."
5. "Everybody Gets Over It" (I don't think that's the title)
6. "Absolutely Your Mother"
7. "Union Dues" -- as a solo, this is a lot more melodic and less rhythmic on the verses than the version I am used to from CR concerts -- like the slow "Oklahoma," it feels like a different song.
8. Song that begins, "Darlin', I fell off the wagon again ..." New to me.
9. "London Bridge is falling down ..." Also new to me.
10 "Man Without a Face" -- again, new to me.
11. Song containing the lyric "Crimson and Clover" (Eric Kufs', not the '60s song) -- don't know the title
12. "Given Signs"
For the encore, Eric did a great fakeout, earnestly explaining he was about to play a French-Canadian folk song from the 1800s, written by a Gold Rush prospector who had become exasperated with his wife's complaints ... which led into a cover of ye olde traditional "Complicated" (from that noted Gold Rush prospector Alanis Morrisette).
So ... fantastic show, can't wait for the next one!

#8 is that pretty UM from 10-04 and 10-17. On the UM thread, Karen has named it “Where Our Love Never Dies”.

That's a GREAT setlist!
Now I'm sure I know the answer to this, but how was he on his own? (Great) Did it go down well? (Of course it did) Did he stand or sit? (I'm guessing stand)
More details please.

That's actually Avril right? That other gold rush prospector ... :D He did that at one of his other solo shows. I'd love to hear that one live.

The show was great Eric is awesome whether he's with a band or on his own. i was so glad he played Dancer. The girl that played right before him, Cyndi Vellmure, was really great too. i grabbed the set list, and some of the titles are different from what they have been titled on the UM:
Dancer
My Bird
One I Left Behing
EUTS
Let It Go
Absolutely
Union Dues
London Bridge
C Cars
No One Like You
Given Signs
and yes it was Avril Lavigne's song Complicated that he encored with, and it was funny because i know the song but i forgot the second verse, and i guess eric did too haha... he played it really well though, gave it a new sound... he should totally play Avril more often haha...
i really love London Bridge, known on the UM as Lesson Learned i think, and C Cars (man without a face). so yeah overall awesome show, and Eric told me that they will be back in Hollywood either the day before or the day after Thanksgiving... hopefully i can make it...

Thanks for posting the set list! Was there a song title for the song that was yesterday's UM, since somebody said he performed that as well? Just curious because I don't see it on there. Then again, it's late for me so I'm blind at the moment.

Well, gee, now I have to rename my UM.

Yeah, I've found myself renaming my UMs a lot when I find out what they are "really" called (ie what they are called by the boys, as opposed to us).

mistaken identities
October 19 2004, 2:19 AM
"Complicated" is by Avril Lavigne and not Alanis Morrisette ... I am pretty sure I knew that, but after awhile, all those singing French-Canadian 1800s-era gold prospectors start to sound alike ...
It was a terrific concert, went over great with the audience and Eric played his six-string acoustic guitar standing.
There was one sort of funny ambient element. The theatre at Genghis Cohen's has a solid door, but it is separated from the restaurant's bar by mesh rather than a solid wall. In the bar, the TV was turned way down, but apparently some sporting event was on (I know less about sports than I do about Avril Lavigne and Alanis Morrisette -- for all I know, it was competitive gold prospecting). On one song, when Eric came to a natural pause in the lyrics, there was a sudden rhythmic shout of "No!" from the bar as apparently something bad happened with whatever team the bar people were supporting. Eric continued, reached the next pause, and from the bar, right on cue, there was a shout of "Yes!" Eric acknowledged this unsolicited call-and-response effect with a philosophical grin and kept going.

Quoting Danielle oh and i believe the song Eric said was called "Absolutely Your Mother" is what we refer to as Way Too Much
That's what Jess called it. The setlist just said Absolutely.
Is it the song that goes something like this:
You say my words are too contrived
But you were barely alive
When I had my first mention
At attention that eased with my disguise
Now there's not a lot of me
And I see way too much of you
I can't tell if the 3rd line ends with mansion or mention.
Four versions of the song and I still don't get it all since Eric kept adding on more lines that I didn't understand. If "Way Too Much" is really called "Absolutely" by Eric, I'll have to ponder the lyrics with that title in mind. Usually the words to the song title are in the song somewhere. I don't hear the word "Absolutely" in the longest version of "Way Too Much" from June 19.

anon - titles don't always appear in songs. also, keep in mind that what are written on set lists aren't necessarily the titles of the songs. more often then not, they're abbreviations to help the guys know what song to play next, not to provide the fans with the real titles.

Eric intro'd that song by saying, "This song is 'Absolutely My Mother.'" I took this to mean that the title of the song was "Absolutely My Mother," although I suppose there are a number of ways to take the statement -- could mean the song is about his mother or that the song is his maternal parent -- or that this is info similar to the gold prospector origins of "Complicated" ... Could also be that I misheard him (I had a major mishearing later in the evening) altogether ...

Thanks, Jayden. That was my post without my name.
What I was trying to say is if that's the same song, then Absolutely might have something to do with the meaning of the song, even if the word isn't in the title. Then, if you know what the point of the song is, sometimes you can guess what those unknown words are given the context.
Of course, the meaning of the title might have nothing to do with what you can read in the lyrics themselves, but the circumstances under which the song was written.
But we try our best!

Oh! Ok, now I have to think about what that's supposed to mean! 8-)
I posted some of the lyrics, that was the song, right?
