Are we going to keep calling it Man Without A Face even though Eric had it titled Company Cars on his solo setlist?

Just wondering. I don't know what you've done in the past. Do you wait until they actually title it on an album before you change it?

For the Oct 19 UM, when I played it, the title "Near Miss Vox FX w/ Beat" is displayed. So should this one be "Near Miss"?

This is so good! The words are great. And the background vocals (Vox FX w/ Beat)! And it's in stereo, too! Love it.

I almost have it...

Near Miss
UM 2004-10-19

come in head strong
come in [?]
come make [king kong?]
come in [?]
but i will not
bow out and forfeit the game

call it foul play
call it justice
call it hearsay
call it a near miss
but i will not
bow my head in shame

the fabric's fading
the water's spinning down the drain
the kid's elated
yeah he's enabled by the king
it's all much sweeter
than the river running past the rain
if i'm a keeper
and you're the mother of the name

call it cancer
call it courtesy
call out the answer
call in an agency
but i will not
breathe in authority

call on the cops
call it procedure
call out all the shots
call it search and seizure
but i will not
can't want calling for free

cause the fabric's fading
the water's spinning down the drain
the kid's elated
yeah he's enabled by the king
and it's all much sweeter
than the river running past the rain
if i'm the keeper
and you're the mother of the name

you're the mother of the name

i think the first verse is actually "call me". so it'd be like "call me king kong". and one of the question marks in the first verse is "hurly burly". if i weren't in the library at college, i'd help fill in the rest.

Was there a post that said, "I am Eric Kufs and I approve this message"? Nooooooo!

I took the time to make the damn list, I'll name them however I feel like! Actually, I changed one of the songs to Zippy De Do Da!

Well, no, I'm lying.

I take that back, I did change it. Go look!

Actually, I'm kidding. I didn't change anything.

Yes I did.

Y'all can't believe anything I say.

Jo ,she/he (sorry i dont no if ur a guy or girl watcher)was just asking a simple question you don't need to react like that , to be fair it was a pretty reasonable thing to ask with a good point

Jo Ann, please don't take offense at the question. I was just wondering. I said so in my original post. I'm relatively new here so I don't know what the accepted custom is when we see names on setlists that are different from what the fans are calling the UMs. (I'm so pleased we even get to see the setlists!) CR isn't writing in to say "uh, no guys, you got it wrong, we really want you to call the song this other name". If you want to keep calling the song by the original fan name, that's fine. It was just a simple question.

There are songs that go by different names, so maybe this one can be added to the list of songs with multiple personalities.

And, actually, I was going to start the new UM thread the last couple of times, but someone always beat me to it. <shrug> It doesn't matter to me who does the list. Just that we keep it up. It's such a nice reference to have.

That makes more sense. I don't know where I got "come in". Only one line to go.

call me headstrong
call me [?]
call me king kong
call me hurly burly

At first I thought the word was "certain" but that doesn't sound right so I put the question mark. Escpecially if it should sound a little like "burly". To me it just sounds like "sir he". But I don't think it's "surly" is it? Although that might go with "headstrong". Auugh!

Jo Ann's a wacky gal that wasn't being serious at all. Don't take what she said to heart. She's just silly.

I can't remember when the names get changed on the list but I guess it's when we know they're official.

Either way, remember the titles we give them are mostly so Dana knows what to title them for her UM site. It's a quick reference guide. So I wouldn't say it's life or death here, really. Leave that to tonight's baseball game. But if the actual title is found out, it's alright to switch it out with our title in progress.

So pretty! I take it "rough" means it's not finalized yet, not that it's part of the title. I can't wait to hear it when it's all done.

If "Near Miss" isn't on the EP, or some recording, I'm going to have a fit. That song has been running thru my head ever since I heard it. I love it.

Of course, I do have the UM to play. It's all nice and lovely since it was recorded at a high bit rate and it's in stereo.

That seems more likely. No reason to buy the cow if we get the milk for free. Not that I'm calling the guys cows, or any kind of bovine relations.

Anyway, I listened to the 15apr03 UM after today's. Is wrong of me to like the stripped down version better? Today's UM sounds like they were taking full advantage of all the bells and whistles of studio recording.

Re: The Union Maid Thread

October 22 2004, 2:56 AM

For the new "Given Signs", I think there's too much echo or reverb or whatever you call it on Eric's voice, especially at the beginning of the song. Maybe just a tad of echo would be better, although I like the "plain" version best. Eric's voice is better without the embellishments. Especially given the style and lyrics of the song.

Last year's version is Eric singing with the guitar supporting his voice. You can focus on the words. I think the new UM has the echo/reverb distracting from the words. The sound of the song is distracting me from the words of the song. Does that make sense?

I do like how you can hear a faint echo of the words behind the refrain in the new version. I think that sounds pretty cool. So you'd need a little reverb on the rest of the song for it to all blend in.

There's some extra guitar licks after the first refrain that I thought were distracting.

Oh, so critical! Just my opinion. Like I'm any kind of music critic. Maybe my views are colored by listening to too many UMs and live versions.

I find it interesting how the songs change from version to version. But for this song, the words are almost exactly the same as it was presented last year. Just an extra "and" or two that doesn't make a difference. And he dropped a repeat of the refrain at the end.

When I read the lyrics, instead of just listening to them, I can really see the poetry.

Devil’s Bargain

Face it and find it again
Chase it to the where or when

Why why why

Manifest it out of the bold
You know you have to wait to be told

Don’t fight it
It’ll come back to you
When your hand’s on fire
It'll come back to you
We all know why
It'll come back to you now

Oh oh oh

Re: The Union Maid Thread

October 22 2004, 8:47 AM

watcher - I completely agree. I think pretty much anything more than just him and the guitar distracts from the words. Which, being a folk song, would be a little more important than the music. I heard this song live in Atlanta a couple months ago and Adam provided a little backing vocal similar to that echo of words here and there in this UM. I liked that but this studio sound doesn't really work for the song. Either way, though, it's interesting to get to hear the different versions and see Eric experimenting with his songs.

Re: The Union Maid Thread

I play my music with MusicMatch, and I've noticed today the songs I download from the Union Maid often actually have names on them!!

eg the one from the 20th is called "AbsolutelyRough"
the 22nd (well, it is here) has "Given Signs II" on it
the 19th is "Near Miss Vox FX w/Beat"

Perhaps we shouldn't be so hasty to strip the tags off them when we save them as it might actually save us a bit of hair tearing in the naming department?

Re: The Union Maid Thread

October 22 2004, 1:23 PM

Sue Smith, see my posts above about the song titles. I also noted the UM titles when I downloaded them.

I got into a bit of hot water when I suggested changing the names when they already had fan names. But I also said a compromise would be to note both names since many people know the songs by the fan name. Lots of CR songs have multiple names. In fact, lots of other songs by other artists have a "popular name" and an "official name".

With "Given II", I took that to mean this was Eric's second pass at the song. He didn't change the lyrics, but he added to the presentation technically.

The Way To Go Home*
CR 2004-10-25

There’s dust on the windows
The sand’s on the floor
Keep the rain a falling
Put the knife back in the drawer

But the earth’s been deflated
You can cut it with a spoon
The devil stick a fork in me
And ran away with the moon

So check out the lady of the night
Stick it deep in my veins
Fill me up with bourbon
And put me on a train

Take me down to Atlantic City
The cashiers [...]
The devil down in my heart
Until I [...]

For I forgot which the winds blow
I’d forgotten how to roam
And was it ever there
The way to go home

If I saw it would I take it
Or would I strangle in the [...]
And racing down the [...]
And I [...] full of charms

Well let me ask this
Cause you trace your lifeline
Down to the back alley dances
Back in the shadows [...]

The gypsies see your future
But they don’t care about your past
Well whatever comes up first
Of all what will it last

For just the [...]
Ring around the collar
The passion for a pen
Take the words from the worthiest scholar

They’ll teach how to sin
They’ll teach you how to atone
They’ll show you how to test the wind
But they don’t know the way to go home

(wails)

The way to go home

I’m tired
I wanna go to bed
I’m tired
I wanna go to bed

Karen said The second line is "there's ants on the floor." I'm only able to make out half of the lines you're trying to fill in.

Ok, thanks. At first I thought he said "the hands are on the floor" which didn't make sense. Then I thought it was "sand" since maybe that would go with the "dust" reference in the previous line. You can put sand on the floor to clean up wet spots. Or you can sprinkle sand on the floor when you want a little sound to your soft shoe dancing. Too much thinking there!

"Ants" works with that "z" sound you hear at the end of the word. I've had ants on the floor myself.

Re: The Union Maid Thread

I'm listening to the UM and pretending that I am not still at work after 6:00 on a Friday night. For the moment, I am placated.

The UM that was titled "Home is where I want to be" is a cover of a Talking Heads song. Very nice.

"This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)"

Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb - born with a weak heart
I guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It's ok I know nothing's wrong . . nothing

Hi yo I got plenty of time
Hi yo you got light in your eyes
And you're standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money
Always for love
Cover up and say goodnight . . . say goodnight

Home - is where I want to be
But I guess I'm already there
I come home - she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place
I can't tell one from another
Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time Before we were born
If someone asks, this where I'll be . . . where I'll be

Hi yo We drift in and out
Hi yo sing into my mouth
Out of all those kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I'm just an animal looking for a home
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till I'm dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head Ah ooh

Sounds like him playing staccato, not a ukelele.

You know those "I'm going to Disney World!" commercials they do after every sports championship game? Just once I want somebody to get up and say, "I'm going to Sesame Place!" Then I could say, "Yeah, that's right. Take that, you non mouth moving bitches!"

LOL That was great!

I've got this image in my head of Eric answering the door for those little costume clad kids screaming "Trick or Treat!" And him with a post-it note on his shirt saying, "I'm Funny. LAUGH!" Then throwing loose candy corn at them like they were pigeons at the park.

Peace Love and Pumpkin Beer

it kinda seems like he ad libbed this. i like how it was a mixture of being about halloween and being political. also, very bob dylan-esque. it actually kind of reminded me of "talkin' john birch paranoid blues".

that and it was plain amusing. nothing says happy halloween like pumpkin beer and throwing candy corn at kids.

Knowing somebody who is addicted to candy corn and what happens to him when he eats it, that sentence takes on a whoooooooooole different meaning for me. hangs head

Eric sings the words “devil’s bargain” in this song. That phrase was in the 2004-10-13 UM but this doesn’t sound like that song.

There's more than one phrase in common with the earlier song .. and I'll admit my heart did a flip at first - because I really loved the other and I kept hoping it would come out and play again.

So if "Devil's Bargain II" this is .. I need to run it by my ears several more times - because the other was a personal instant favourite

Re: The Union Maid Thread

Yeah, it does have phrases from a couple of other songs. Whoa, I listen to too much CR if I know that!

How about calling it Don't Miss Me since that's the first line of the refrain? Although that makes it sound like a love song and it's not. But Don't Miss Me does fit in a protest song kind of way.

Man, thinking up titles can be as hard as figuring out the words.

mix up ??

I was just working on the webiste and checked all "unknown" files.

Track 66 (December 28th, 03) and Track 67 (January 2nd, 04) are exactly the same.

42 sec. and 168 kb

can someone confirm this? Or is it just mixed up on the crumarchive? (where I've downloaded the january track)

btw, the "unknown" song December 26 is "try too hard"
