Sorry it's late, Troubadour

I am sorry that report is so late I think it’s a symptom of over work and under pay . Please excuse this rambling post, I haven’t got much time, it’s bank holiday Monday and I have too much to do…..so without further ado….
we have to start off with the obligatory navigational fuck up which even amazed me. We lost London! My car didn’t want to go past Cambridge ( I have ruts in the road to Cambridge lately as I have been at our central office, but I digress!) How the hell, after one hours driving do I end up going the wrong way up the M1 away from London, this does not bode for the rest of the day I mean ‘London!’ its big enough to find I would think!.Then having finally Located the city we arrived smack bang in the middle of rush hour … things rapidly went from bad to worse and then downhill from there, finally and more than a few hours later than we planed we made it to what was formerly the Paragon Hotel in Earls Court , those of you who were at The Harvest will remember that this was never the most salubrious of locations but now it’s been re-branded as the Hotel Ibis and has actually achieved the seemingly impossible and gone downmarket … but it’s central, has a car park and is extremely cheap so it will do!

Having checked in and admired our dismal accomadation we make our way to the Troubadour it does what it says on the sign, it’s a small a very atmospheric place that full of Troubadoury type things that remind of my mad ( said affectionatly, with hummor!) Granddad’s shed which was full of intreasting conversation pieces. Anyway we decided to have food and wine( always a good plan!).
I now know without a shadow of a doubt that my age is fast catching up with me, our order was taken by a highly efficient and polite waiter who made sure that everything was suitable for two ageing sisters. Then three very pretty young Common Rotation fans settled at the table opposite us and our waiter went from “ Mr efficient” to Mr “ here are my genitals, please admire them!” in no time flat, I swear that if he stood any more heroically he’d have been in danger of splitting his trousers and seriously disappointing his future girlfriends and I have never seen a bottle of wine opened from groin level in a more outragous manor.. Thank God it wasn’t champagne!

Onwards and downwards to the cellar where the gig was being held , we stationed ourselves in our favourite position as blatant fire hazards up the staircase where we could sit and smoke and chat to other fire hazards . It was here that we got out first experience of the sheer insanity that is Corn Mo , imagine if you will a dude who looks like a blonde Meatloaf and sings in a fabulous rock voice whilst accompanying himself on an accordion, then add some frankly surreal lyrics and you have a recipe for utter hilarity … I haven’t laughed so much in ages, a perfect start to the week. The only sadness was that the venue, small as it was wasn’t anywhere near sold out. Common Rotation are a fantastic band and they deserve sell out audiences in far bigger venues than this! The guys really need some serious promotion in the UK because I want them to keep coming over here and on fifty or so £15 tickets it simply can’t be viable!. Common Rotation were great, despite the fact that Eric’s guitar refused to stay in tune... luckily Adam had a ready supply of ad libs and tales to keep us amused during the frequent tune ups. It was a fun evening and we headed back to the hotel in a happy mood. Only to spend a night of deeply surreal dreams. Possibly related to Corn Mo’s magazine which made his lyrics seem positively linear … I woke up at 3AM babbling wildly about Hamsters and it was a tired and dishevelled pair who headed off to Brompton Road Cemetery in the morning to mooch amongst the tombstones, soak up the sun and schmooze with the squirrels, then we headed to the Kings Road to drink coffee and watch the rich people , all in all a highly satisfactory day , followed by the second Common Rotation gig which was fantastic! A sold out venue and a fabulous atmosphere! Now that was fun! The band was on fine form and Common Rotation on form are a treat and a half! We were also standing with some really lovely fans, and to complete our evening the venue played us out with Iggy Pop.
We went out on a high and, in my sisters case with an inexplicable craving for a Mr Kipling’s individual fruit pie … the greatest city in the world and could we find a Mr Kipling’s individual fruit pie? Could we buggery!!
So thanks again Guy’s and come back soon
Cheers
Christy

Wow! I must make the time to read that pamplet of Mo's.

Loved your report about your travels.. I'm not sure about mooching around the cemetary though. Last time I walked through there it was more than a little dodgy! Mind you, I WAS on my own and it was early evening, which could have skewed my perception a little. But I had a flatmate come back from a walk there and say the same thing. There were men lurking around the tombstones!

I once tried to escape Paris and kept ending up back there so I understand about not finding London on the Motorways! Better luck next time.

You really must take the time to read Corn Mo’s pamphlet, it is supremely funny! The only sad thing is that the Corn Mo CD that I bought doesn’t work I felt quite sorry for myself when I was driving away from London and thought that a bit of Mo might just cheer me up and it didn’t play. I must get myself over to his site and order another one.
I Live in a very rural area with lots of animals and as much as I love London and I do, I hate being in hotels in the morning and find the need to talk to the wildlife and drink coffee. The squirrels were a bit of a substitute for my horses and they seemed to like me and the food I brought (the cemetery keeper wasn’t that impressed with me and pointed out very loudly that they are vermin, I disagree!)
As for mooching around the cemetery, it was first thing in the morning and the only people we saw were people jogging or walking dogs. Mind you saying that I probably scared all the tombstone lurkers as I had around one hundred hungry squirrels following me!
I also have a knack of not being able to leave Paris, uncanny really, half my family live in France, I have to visit quite a lot, but Paris always seem to send me the wrong way. I blame it on the road signs that say ‘all routes this way’ and then ‘all other routes that way’ it’s a conspiracy I tell you.
Losing London is not however forgivable, I have to work in London and Cambridge so often that its just plain daft, I think maybe I just really wanted to go to the Glasgow gig and knew that I couldn’t so it was psychosomatic symptom! The London gigs were great so I will just have to be happy with two shows until Common Rotation come back to the UK.
