M Bar April 11 report

Hi, sorry it's taken so long to post (crazy work week), but here's an account of the April 11 M Bar set.

Lineup for the evening was Adam, Eric, Ken, Mark McConville and Ravi Lahiri on sitar(!). Jordan is off touring.

With Mark Evan Jackson doing his unique brand of emceeing, the set began with a cover of They Might Be Giants' "Don't Start," with Adam on lead vocals and Eric making his six-string resonate like a 12-string. There was near-whispered delivery on the "I don't want to live in this world" section, bursting to full volume on the chorus.

Next was a haunting, beautiful rendition of "Auctioneer," with Mark on electric guitar and Ravi on sitar, gorgeous vocal harmonizing from Adam and Eric, a very dreamlike feel and an extra-long instrumental section where the trumpet customarily goes.

"Thrilling Adventure" cast member (and voice of Bender on "Futurama," as Adam mentioned) John DiMaggio came onstage to provide sound effect vocals, with Eric on lead vocals, for a rap-done-folk-style cover of (I think?) "Summerland."

Mark was on electric guitar and Adam on lead vocals for "Trumpet." Adam noted, "This is a song about masturbating in church. My parents are here [in the audience]. What would be more appropriate?" Eric (absolutely even): "Anything." There was a little extra reverb in the instrumental and a country waltz bridge.

"These Are Your Words" was next, with Eric strumming guitar, Mark on pedal steel, and lots of Adam/Eric vocal harmonies.

"Union Dues" had Mark on pedal steel, Ken on cojone, Eric on lead vocals and Adam harmonizing to lively effect.

"Everything Under the Sun" again had pedal steel and cojone (there was perhaps a bit too much reverb from the pedal steel on this one, maybe a microphone issue) for a generally lovely rendition. Ken took up modified shakers for the end of the song.

Rebecca Wharfan joined in with violin for "On the Idol," with Eric on guitar and lead vocals, Adam on harmonica and back-up vocals, Mark on pedal steel and Ken on cojone.

The off-mike number was a cover of Paul Simon's "Days of Miracle and Wonder," with more wonderful vocal harmonies and Ken on shaker.

The set was followed immediately by the duo of "Garfunkel and Oates" (actually Kate Micucci on ukelele and a compatriot on guitar) singing cheerfully satiric folk songs.

And that's it for the evening!
